I gotta add the "cash-me-outside bottle." Last year's special edition was a home run (looking at you Remus V)? Let's increase the price this year from $70 to $120 and CASH IN on this surge in popularity. Too bad the expectations for Remus VI were high and the bottle contained a "meh"...
The $100 secret sourced bourbon that nobody knows about and then Matt Porter talks about it and it disappears overnight is my most and least favorite at the same time.
This is a good list, and I think it applies reasonably well to other types of booze. The $100 booze that I seek out is the craft type, even though it can be a bit overpriced. Of course, quality is variable, so it is wise to try before buying. At its best, craft booze offers a unique and interesting experience, transparency and plenty of information on the label, and a product that is more natural and less tampered with (i.e. non chill filtered). These distilleries, being small scale operations, tend to charge more because they have high overhead, but some manage to offer good quality entry level products in the $50 range. Maybe the best $100 bottle is the one that costs $50. One type that I find annoying is the $50 bottle that costs $100 or more (sometimes a lot more) when it happens to show up in a store. Blanton's is a great $50 bourbon, and that is what I paid for a bottle years ago before it was "discovered," but whenever I see it lately, it is priced far higher. The last time I saw a bottle on the shelf, it was marked at $200. At that price, there are more interesting options in bourbon and rye, and there are some excellent Scotch whiskies with age statements around 18 years, so I see no reason to overpay for a bottle of Blanton's.
Leadslingers 10 year old is made by a young Scisstortail Distillery out of Moore, Oklahoma to help in developing this bourbon. The distillery, which we first highlighted last year, was among the first to create a bourbon in their state (That's from an article in 2015 - But to me, that's sounds off to be 10 years old from 7 years ago article, unless the Distillery HAD aged whiskey somewhere)
When I heard marketing major I immediately thought Blue Run. Outside of having a sick butterfly and a stylish design I can't see overpaying for mediocre contents no matter how cool the bottle. If I'm going to pay at or above the $100 range I prefer to stick with familiar favorites or well regarded whiskey tube recommends.
Great call on checking the distillery out for tastings to see if the ol' $100 bourbon is worth that price tag. I did just that (knowing I would probably like it) when I visited Frey Ranch in Fallon, NV a couple years back. I had to take a long route to get there as it was winter and the straight shot up I-80 was closed due to snow. But, I ended up getting a lot of great stuff there and meeting the owners. Great people and fantastic "$100" bottles haha.
You missed the bourbon that sells for $45 in a store but after you take a picture of it and put that picture on the bookface, it instantly becomes a $100 bourbon.
I think if I had a hundred dollars to buy a bottle of bourbon, I would come home with 3 or 4 bottles that added up to $100 or less. Now some might say I'm a cheapskate, others might call me poor, but my therapist says I'm just financially challenged and to practice some coping skills. When she says "coping skills", I hear "Old Granddad 114" or "Old Forrester Rye". Maybe I'm just old? Any new news about Old Sharter?
Well done, Matt. You've detailed a number of examples.. Essentially, "$100 whiskey" is the result of anything that prompts or impels/compels one to part with objective cash for what is ultimately a subjective experience, i.e., the perceived value of ownership. Every purchase of a luxury good (which, rationally is any $100 bottle) is the result of creating a sense of necessity, whether real or false or imagined, by any means possible. I have been sucked in many times by what I'd call "the great story." That may be hype over quality or rarity, or desire to support a local or highly admirable business. In any event, I wind up with an expensive bottle that i might not even enjoy. "Taste first" is the best advice, Matt, but everyone knows that that's very often impossible.
Hey Matt, I'm curious about the flipside of this list. What are some $100 bourbons that you think are totally worth it? Either types or individual bourbons at that price range.
WTRB = Pocket Knife Lucky Seven = Treat Yo’Self Day Others = Completely open parking spots with cones in front of them and a big sign saying “Valet Only”
You’re actually fairly accurate with you’re PA Politicians comment. Story came out they let higher ups buy allocated product without giving the public a chance.
There is I can't find it, but here it is bottle. Store owners jack a modest MSRP bottle up to that 100 range because an area never sees it, and since it is that hard to find it, they can move it.
You missed the established distillery that has a bottle that is only available at their distillery so you buy it because where are you going to see it again.
You know what else is slick with Bluerun...? I bought a bottle of theirs through an different online store... the CEO of Bluerun sent me a hang written thank you note and a well wishing!
Got one of those too, was a nice touch. From a purchase of high rye... it's the only one i got from them so far and have bought a couple replacements..
Love the video! So question, if its not a kosher question then don't worry (and if someone who knows more than me can answer lmk)- do you get to write off whiskey purchases as business purchases if you're a full time whiskey tuber? Lol
Matt, I would love to see you do your top ten favorites in the $60.00 - $90.00 (maybe even 1or 2 at $100.00). As Bourbon prices go up. No One wants to spend that kind of $$$ on a cool bottle or a bottle with a fancy label, but the juice inside sucks.
Haha being from PA that PA joke was spot on they were buying it themselves in the office. Also skip Colorado 291 I tried the rye and it’s like 74 bucks but tastes like garbage
Doesn't get the clicks, but $100 that was worth the price. Similar to your super secret sourced, but things that aren't secret and are findable and are worth spending it on. Assuming you consider any bourbon worth $100. You're always going to get the people that say nothing is worth more than their $20 {insert heaven hill brand} BIB.
The fake $100 bourbon. Bourbon that is purchased at MSRP, but people value them at secondary price and the not want to trade at secondary value even though they paid MSRP.
Bungie cords and $100 bourbon. If that had been the title of this vid, I’d have watched HOURS ago 😉 I’m trying to think of another category of $100 bottles…how about $100 bottles with “ridiculous stoppers/corks that fall apart when you open the bottle”? I’ve had a run of crap bottle stoppers lately. Not sure what’s going on except poor design and/or bad QC. Old Forester SiB, Bushwood, Remus Repeal 1, and even Blanton’s corks have failed me in the last couple of months. The Blanton’s stopper was corroded and left deposits on the neck. Had to rebottle it. Kudos to Bushwood for sending me replacement corks. 👍
The price of Blue Run is what's prevented me from buying a bottle to try. It's sourced whisky - nothing that interesting about the story. The bottle looks nice, and I know your Bourbon-Junkie buddies fawn over this stuff, but I just know I'd be 100% disappointed with buyer's remorse, If I paid $90 bucks for what I could get in a $40 bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel (a bartender told me they're very similar).

I recently purchased and used ZBiotics and I have to say I’m a fan. Not very cheap but I’m a fan to use it once a week at best
Another type:
The $30-$50 bourbon that gets price gouged up to over $100
😂 I was gonna say the “$25…$100 bourbon “!
I was gonna say the same thing (with the exact same price range, 30-50) 😂
I gotta add the "cash-me-outside bottle." Last year's special edition was a home run (looking at you Remus V)? Let's increase the price this year from $70 to $120 and CASH IN on this surge in popularity. Too bad the expectations for Remus VI were high and the bottle contained a "meh"...
I very much wish I read this before I just picked up a bottle of VI today. It was good to very good, but definitely NOT $120 good.
"Rare Stash? More like Pure Trash." Had to pause the video, my sides hurt from laughing.

Love the PA politician shout out 😂 I laugh and also cry as I live in PA.
OMG! Thank you do much for that jab at PA.
I truly can never get enough of the rare stash hatred, it brings me so much joy
The $100 FOMO Bourbon...I've fallen victim to it several times.

According to them they formed in 2013, not sure if scissortail was founded then as well, scissortail has its own label as well.
Matt: Add a category of readily accessible bourbons worth $100, hopefully but not necessarily, costing less than $100.
When I heard marketing major I immediately thought Blue Run. Outside of having a sick butterfly and a stylish design I can't see overpaying for mediocre contents no matter how cool the bottle. Another category that will probably need to be added soon (unfortunately) is "Every small batch or single barrel bourbon release"
Lucky 7 fanboy checking in, and you made me happy.
I tried rare stash recently, and my infinity bottle that is made from neck pours of everything I buy is waaaay better. lol
You missed the bourbon that sells for $45 in a store but after you take a picture of it and put that picture on the bookface, it instantly becomes a $100 bourbon.

So...is the 291 good or not? I can find them here in Europe so would love to know.
Yes
The marked up Buffalo trace product
This video is amazing. Not gonna lie, I've fallen victim to all of them at least once and will probably do it again this weekend.
291 is awesome...if you like the taste of burnt plastic. Great show!!!

The overhyped $30-$50 bottles (cough cough Buffalo trace products cough cough) that are marked up to $100+ by store owners
I’ve yet to pay over $30 for BT and never would.
The most I'm willing to go anymore is $60. I can usually find something decent in the $50 range.
In-between 50-60ish eagle rare, russels single barrel, store pick cash strength stranahans. my favorites
Fantastic list! Cheers
Good bourbon that used to be a good value but are now taking advantage of price inflation! Booker's, ecbp
Well done and so true. Cheers!
Where did you get your straight sided glens Matt? Really like them, but have not been able to find any similar to them.
How’s the Blue Run Rye?
Hilarious video Matt 👏🇺🇸🥃
Damn while talking about #3.. that hit hard, hit too close to home, and hurt.
Keep this going
Love the video! So question, if its not a kosher question then don't worry (and if someone who knows more than me can answer lmk)- do you get to write off whiskey purchases as business purchases if you're a full time whiskey tuber? Lol

Is the Blue Run High rye any good? Haven’t seen the older Blue Run in my area but I’ve seen the high rye popping up.
I like it. I don't think I more than 60 dollars like it though
Sounds like there are not many $100 bourbons worth buying. That is fine. I'll happily stick to sub-$100. Plenty to choose from in that range.
My rare stash is leafy green and oh so sweet..... but i didn't source it from hidden barrels.....
I like number 1 the best.
I bought a 291 store pick and it is absolute trash. Maybe after a couple of months after opening , it might be better but I'm afraid to try it.
🤣 This is GOLD!
So far, the only good celeb whiskey I’ve tried is Longbranch. Especially for $42
How about the $100 bottle of MGP sourced Bourbon ?
I just opened one tonight and was so mad. Actually, still mad about it.

Blue Run is most definitely the Marketing Major. $40 Bourbon in a $60 bottle.
MY $100 BOURBON WAS WHEN I SPLIT A BOTTLE OF PAPPI WITH A FRIEND (He paid 1/2) and I KEPT THE BOTTLE LOLOL
