      Makes for a great, dramatic moment of use.
      Imagine a Starlit Span Magus with a longbow, the enemy is leaving her effective range and she is hte last chance the party has to down them before they are out of range to get reinforcements.
      She holds an arrow up and imbues it with arcane intent and draws her bow. She aims, eyes glowing, and lets the arrow fly with a last ditch spellstrike to finish the foe off at the last minute.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the three action economy as it's own point. It's such a pivot from how 5e works, with the 5 different action types (action, move, bonus, reaction, free) that aren't interchangeable. The switch to just having 3 actions and a reaction was awesome for me.

    • @CrizzyEyes
      @CrizzyEyes ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And it is so much better than Pathfinder 1e/old D&D 3.5e. Standard action, move action, swift action, immediate action, full round action, reaction, free action, and those are just the types I can think of off the top of my head.

    • @dracmeister
      @dracmeister ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@CrizzyEyes there was no such thing as a reaction in PF1e
      Immediate Action is what is essentially your reaction BUT ONLY if you haven't spent your Swift Action on your turn and vice versa (you can't have a Swift action on your turn if you used your Immediate Action BEFORE your turn.).
      Immediate Actions are actions you can take off your turn within the round. So you can have before or after your turn but never with a Swift Action on your turn.
      Immediate Actions are super-rare in this case, mostly relegated to certain specific spells and class features or if you played with the "Path of War" alternative rule system.
      PF1e's action economy is built off 3.5e so there's that.

    • @AMVsForU
      @AMVsForU ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dont forget that Pathfinder 2nd edition has free actions too! One free action of every type of action (trigger) per round. So for example, you could use a free action to quickly communicate something simple with your party (normally speaking is a standard action). And you could use your free reaction to catch an item that is thrown at you. Make sure to communicate the rules regarding free actions with your GM. As what is allowed as a free action can differentiate per GM! Everyone good luck on your pathfinder 2nd edition adventures!

      I am honestly not a very experienced GM, but I usually tell my players "make a concept of your character and then look up what works with it". Alternatively you can just read classes/races, find something you consider fun enough, and try building your character entirely around that, but that would be overwhelming. If you jump ship with your group, I would recommend you to try to take baby steps at first, like playing a full goblins party. Even just goblins can be diversified with ancestry enough to feel different (like having a bity goblin monk, who can suddenly bite you as a part of his flurry, pyromaniac alchemist who loves seeing things burn, a stealthy rogue goblin and a bulkier barbarian goblin and maybe even split and make a half-celestial cleric goblin). And that's only the heritage with some classes I think could go well with, you also get an ancestry feat, which while mostly is dependent on your heritage, still can makes your goblin brigade even more diverse. Or you can make a bity rogue goblin which loves biting peoples rear regions.

    As a quick note on character creation, you don't need to choose a specific race to get specific bonuses you get, even if your race gives you only 1 free boost, you may choose 2 free ability boosts instead (you used to need to take 2 ability flaws to get another boost, but it was changed to this in the latest errate, which I HIGHLY recommend reading because it also has some clarifications to older rules which got often mixed up)
    Edit: just to clarify, you don't get a free additional ability boosts, you can just choose between, for example, with Halflings: 1 boost to dexterity, 1 boost to wisdom, 1 free boost and 1 flaw to strength OR 2 free ability boosts (like a human does) or with Kitsune: 1 boost to charisma, 1 free ability boost OR 2 free ability boost (so boost to charisma is just like the pirate code, more of suggestion than a rule)
    You can also get ability flaws without gaining anything, just in case you want to have lower stats for some reason (but no more than 1 flaw per characteristic)

      This is super-important - many D&D players wanted to decouple ability score boosts from Race/Ancestry since 5e launched, and the latest player books specifically allowed for this. Not having that going into Pathfinder would feel like a step backwards for many, including myself. This change was the key change that really pushed me to embrace PF2e.

    • @Vashna
      @Vashna ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgesutherlandhoward4417 Trying to equalize all races by removing modifiers is woke bullshit. D&D began as a system of mechanics to reflect and manage fantasy warfare. The creators attempted to apply mathematical models to weapons, armor, races, and other aspects of the game to produce more plausible behaviors during combat and adventure. Fiction requires suspension of disbelief, even when magic is involved (which is why magic systems have rules), and it's hard to accept that a gnome would have the same strength as a half-ogre, or that the half-ogre would have the same intelligence as a gnome. It's a fact that there is some truth in stereotypes, and there is nothing wrong with being part of the norm. Or embracing the challenge of playing against type by trying to do something you're not innately born to excel at, by overcoming racial or species limitations.
      This all started a decade ago with absurd articles claiming that it's somehow "racist" for an orc to be less intelligent than a human. This has ruined D&D, with 5e being bland, formulaic where most players are non-human multi-classed amalgamations to the extreme. Somewhere along the line, people lost sight of the fact that having ANY kind of modifier in the game (including racial mods) is meant to enrich the teamwork spirit of the game by encouraging people to rely on others who fit a particular role better. Each adventure or mission requires certain jobs and certain people excel at each job. There are still some genres that grasp this appeal, like the "heist film" genre. Modern players want to be "jack of all trades, master of everything." Imagine how ridiculous it would be if you had a bank heist story where one person just did all the tasks themselves.
      If my views don't tick off this woke generation, I'll take it a step further. I actually think there should be sex modifiers too; human females should get -1 strength +1 constitution. Women are physically weaker than men, but have better constitution; they mature faster, have longer lifespans, higher tolerance for pain (e.g. child-birthing), and less prone to many illnesses and diseases than men. While this concept of sex modifiers would aggravate some, I challenge most players to argue against the fact that having more constitution over strength is vastly better for most players (so any argument about how this disadvantages female characters goes out the window). Instead of trying to redefine humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes and other established mythological creatures, why not just create new appealing races that distinguish themselves, such as a race where the females are superior to men in things such as size, strength, height, etc. But here's the problem... you can create races and content all day long, and describe or claim something to be a certain way, but it's the mathematics behind the system (when accepted and enforced) that causes those behaviors and distinctions to actually manifest during gameplay. (For example, if an elf has +Dex bonus, then through prolonged gameplay and dice rolls, players will see the elf doing better with ranged weapons and acrobatic type checks, reinforcing the intention and believability that an elf is more agile than most races.)

    • @colinsmith1495
      @colinsmith1495 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Even more, each race typically gives you one or two fixed boosts, but you also get a free boost by default from race. Want to play an Elf Fighter, but Elf doesn't give Str? No problem, use the free boost, and get both Str and Dex. A lot will also give TWO fixed boosts and ONE fixed flaw (-2), so watch out for that, but you get a free boost regardless.
      Same thing with Background. It'll give you one boost that's a choice between two stats, but then another that's completely free. Your Elf Barber Fighter can start out with 18 Str.

    I recently transitioned from 5e to Pathfinder 2e and I think it's an important note to DMs that Pathfinder ACTUALLY provides proper DM support! Magic items have economy, crafting has proper rules, downtime have proper rules and so on. In the adventure modules (aka. adventure paths), everything you are asked to do to the players is covered with descriptions and rules, you can run everything out of the book and you need to do a LOT LESS prep work compared to 5e, because you are not forced to constantly come up with you own systems. You still have the ability to do so, but you are provided with the tools if you don't want to.

Professor Dungeon Master at DungeonCraft pointed out in today's video that there is a shortage of DMs and if we say that we don't appreciate what WOTC is doing then we can share this with our players and tell them that our decision is to try something else. I'm not saying this will always work or is the right thing to do in all situations but he is right and DMs are going to be looking for videos like this one. My DND group moved to Pathfinder 2E in 2020 and never looked back. There is SO MUCH customization and fun in these books, and it's easy for a dungeon master to create their own campaigns/worlds within the rule set. For those coming to this system, WELCOME! Another amazing resource besides Archives is Pathbuilder 2E. It fantastic free resource like Archives. You can create your own characters all through the website/app and print or copy your character sheets (most of my players just have the app pulled up on their IPad while they play for easy access to spell descriptions and success ranges). The site also saves your character! It's very useful and makes for quick and easy leveling since everything is right in front of you. The site also makes it easy to find out what your class gets at each level. As a dungeon master, Pathfinder 2E is way too much fun and deserves to be in the spotlight. Especially with the recent revelations of Wizards of the Coast. Welcome, have fun :)

    The cost is part of why we're still on PF1 instead of PF2. And yeah, we all know about AoN (not only did Paizo endorse them, AoN practically took over Paizo's PRD site), so we know the mechanics are free. But he (and I) like to support Paizo when we can, and we use books we actually own to "limit" the amount of choices (because it's Pathfinder, there are LOTS of choices).
    But my DM mentions cost not because of the cost to buy PF2 material (though that's a bit of it). It's because he's spent so much on PF1 material already. It's an investment that he's not ready to go away from yet. And...he really just likes that system.

    Another big difference that comes up with teamwork is the way crits work. You mostly crit by rolling 10 over the AC or DC, so if you get someone frightened 2 and flat-footed and get a +1 bonus on the fighter, the roll the fighter needs to crit is now dropped by 5. And given that critting attacks can itself inflict debuffs, you can begin to set up a powerful combat flow by linking abilities together.

    • @colinsmith1495
      @colinsmith1495 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the things that proves this the most to me is how they rolled out 2E. Paizo didn't just say "Here's the system, take it or leave it." They spent a YEAR sending out Playtest material to GMs ALL OVER THE PLACE. I think it was as simple as signing up on their website, though I'm not sure. But I know my local GM got into it. They'd send one-shot sessions with pre-made characters to run with your players, and then at the end they'd have a survey for every player asking specific questions like 'What'd you think about X ability from Y class? Was Z ability from N monster appropriate? How did the turn system work for you?'
      I don't know how D&D did their playtests for different versions, but this one was clearly done with both an ear and a heart toward the community.

    • @thiagoflores01
      @thiagoflores01 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billable1861 Basically, in the first place, I believe that Starfinder as well as Pathfinder 2nd provide means of customizing characters that despite belonging to a class can be particularly unique at the first level. It is entirely possible to have a group of just a single class that are different from each other, this in a simple and fast way, without rolls, which in other systems can often frustrate beginners.
      The variety of races available is very different from the conventional one, with interesting particularities even for humans, in this regard the creature books (Alien Files 1, 2, 3 and 4) also have more race options for characters who want to go beyond the that you already have in the basic module.
      In Starfinder, the spaceship combat rules system is a lot of fun, as it gives players roles on board the ship, and each member can make a big difference to make the game interesting. The options for customizing space vehicles are as vast as for creating characters, being able to choose to take a ready-made model or customize it in your own way with manufacturing points. Not to mention the list of conventional vehicles that are also in the game. We cannot forget a fundamental characteristic for Sci Fi scenarios, the technology. At this point the list of equipment is very vast and complete.
      The mystical side is there too, and blended very organically with technology. Giving the possibility of creating mysteries about the mythical and divine side of the universe.
      The history of the Golarion galaxy setting and the worlds of the pact is very complete and cohesive, leaving room for a would-be game master to imagine where to start his adventures. If necessary, a game master can use one of the many ready-made adventures available in the Paizo catalogue, they are extremely complete and have a lot of extra information as a complement to what the basic module already offers. It's so easy to narrate stories similar to Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, Battlestar Galáctica, Macross, and more.
      Supplements are also great, in addition to telling more about the story of the scenario as a whole, they have more items, weapons, armor, spaceships and vehicles, as well as more customization options for characters, with new classes, themes and new mechanics.
      Anyway, I tried to summarize the advantages available in the Starfinder RPG, and I'm not lying when I say that I could easily talk about much, much more in terms of the amount of things available if you want a complete system for those who like the Sci-Fi genre. I love this RPG.
      Note: I don't work for Paizo nor for Editora New Order that publishes the system here in Brazil, I really became a big fan 😂😂😂
      I hope I could have helped.

    I was actually introduced to “dnd” through my dad who’s been playing it for like 25+ years and little did we know we were actually playing pathfinder, when I found out about dnd 5e I hated it because it was so different than pathfinder 1e, it lacked a lot of the complexity/ interesting rules so I stuck with pathfinder, then over the years I realized 5e was just too popular to not play if I wanted to consistently find groups so I made the switch and it grew on me, but it got stale after just a few years but I did appreciate some of the differences, there can be beauty in simplicity but I still felt a lot of the rules in 5e were too dumbed down to be fun anymore so my friends and I decided to do a whole “5.5E” overhaul just for our personal use. Then….recent events happened and I found this channel to hear the news on what was going on without realizing this was a pathfinder 2E channel and thus I fell down the rabbit hole and realized pathfinder 2E solves almost ALL of my problems with both dnd 5E and pathfinder 1E, just the right amount of complexity and customization imo

These apps are character building, and tracking apps that include all the rules for everything you pick for your character, and puts it into a completely easy to follow format that takes all the hurt out of character building and tracking for those who aren't used to the system. The apps let you share your character builds with others, and with Foundry, if you are someone who plays online for reasons of distance, health, or just convenience.

It doubles down on your explanations of conditions and teamwork and demonstrates why those seemingly small bonuses are extra important here. It also makes your character choices more meaningful because that extra +1 STR means the extra damage and accuracy for your Fighter but also may expand your critical threat range; something that would require magic items in other systems.

    If you've seen the Taking 20 video that claimed PF2e combat has a problem with having an optimal set of actions you perform every round... That's actually wrong. If he had used teamwork in that video he would have been waaay more effective. Him using the same actions every turn wasn't optimal at all. In my experience PF2e combats are actually very dynamic and my turns often feel quite different.
    For example, it's almost never a good idea to attack 3 times in a turn due to the penalties on making multiple attacks. Instead people tend to attack either once or twice. Then people use their remaining action for something like demoralising or feinting or moving (or both if they only attack once). And moving can be a really good idea. Especially against bosses. Bosses have a really high attack bonus, so they probably can hit you with all three attacks. Or they might have powerful abilities that require them to use all three of their actions to perform. If you can move out of their reach and they have to move to catch up with you then you have substantially curtailed their damage output. And in a boss fight the party has many more actions than the boss. The bosses actions are much stronger, but they have less. So if you can get them to waste actions you are making big tactical gains.

    First of all, this video is wonderful. I appreciate how you approach these topics with sensitivity; there's no "PF2e does this better." Sure, you point out how it's different, or might have more options, or might be less complicated or whatever. But there's no "system A is better than system B." One of the reasons I've been following you since pretty much your beginning is that you're a stand up, class guy. And I appreciate seeing that continue with how you choose not only to stick out your hand in greeting, but to also understand system wars is not a thing this entire hobby needs right now.
    I definitely think you should do a Part 2. I would imagine one thing that will make the list is the monsters themselves, both for the small but flavorful mechanical options (I know Owlbear is a common comparison here) that make them feel more dynamic and fun to face for players, and the balance they bring compared to the party which also makes things very easy for the GM. I was watching a video from a gentleman on the DM Lair Channel, titled, "Disappointing Boss Battle To Legendary Showdown." The video was about just that, converting low level types into tougher fights. But his beginning story about trying to figure out how to better balance a creature for his party during a fight (often by just adding more hit points) quickly reminded me of my own time with 5e, and how it served as one of the reasons for stepping away from the game altogether back in 2017. In three and a half years of PF2e, I've never once had to fudge any of my enemies to make it a better balanced fight for my party.
    The second thing that might make the Part 2 list is the XP system. Given that at any given level, you only need 1,000 XP to move on to the next level in Pathfinder 2e makes it pretty different than 5e (at least as far as I can remember). For players it's probably not going to matter--after all, as long as you get your XP you're a happy camper, lol. But my god, as as GM it's just so much easier to build encounters for the party. The tables are already done for you, and make it easier for you to decide how you want to put together your enemy encounters, etc. I've had a fair share of 5e GMs give Pathfinder 2e a go as a player, only to migrate over completely and branch out as a GM once they realize how much easier running the game can be.
    It's worth mentioning that I've seen indications from 5e players in the comments sections of some of the more recent PF2e videos that there is a 5e GM shortage. I can't speak to whether it is true or not. Maybe a 5e player reading this can confirm this shortage and/or offer more insight? Regardless, perhaps the complexity of running a 5e game is partly responsible for any shortage, and something potential GMs (for any system) should know? Maybe? I don't know.
    Oh, and maybe some combination of Tags, with explanation on how they work and how it makes things easier for players and especially the GM.
    I don't know, I could go on and on.

    • @canhaoambulante9329
      @canhaoambulante9329 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. The system is balanced to the point that an optimized build and a non optimized build are reasonably at equal power. What really determines power is how you play the game. • @bryanpritchett

      While our group loved the crunchy minutia of Pathfinder 1 when it came out, we now have careers and families and not a heck of a lot of free time and so we have grown a sincere appreciation for the mechanical elegance and simplicity of 5e, which doesn't get in the way of the narrative and which does not reward min/maxing to any significant degree. That and the fact that leveling a character takes minutes rather than hours. We REALLY enjoy that bit. I'll revisit my PF2 material--bought when it was published and then never touched--but honestly it will take a fair bit of f*ckery on Hasbro's part to get us to abandon 5e at this point.

    I... recently got into Pathfinder from 5e (👀)... so I'm playing around, learning about mechanics etc, making my first character. And I'm flabbergasted already! Yes it is kind of overwhelming, but in a good way. It's not overwhelming because it's that complicated - pretty straightforward actually - but SO MANY OPTIONS. I absolutely love it.
    One of my biggest gripes with 5e is the lack of lateral character advancement. You get your subclass at level 3, and (with the exception of the rogue) you have at most 5 feat slots that also compete with ASIs, which sucks. Major FOMO trigger. Not to mention they are wildly imbalanced, so if you don't take OP feats like "Sharpshooter" you're shooting yourself in the foot (heh, because you're not a sharpshooter, get it), at least mechanics wise.
    PATHFINDER IS THE OPPOSITE. DID I MENTION THAT I LOVE IT?
    I made my first character yesterday (with your character creation video from the PF2e playlist btw), a Half-Orc Human Barbarian with a Warrior background. I considered a Half-Orc Dwarf at first, and isn't that just delightful that I can do that easily, but I wanted an entry-level, as "vanilla" as possible first character to dip my toes in, so to speak. I am not ashamed to admit I SQUEED multiple times during character creation because the options tickled my thinkmeat in the most delightful ways.
    One point that took some getting used to was the placement of the feats on the character sheet. Where do I put a half orc's lowlight vision and where does the Orc Weapon Familiiarity go? What's my "special 1st" feat, I thought that was under "Heritage 1st"? 😅 Still stuff to figure out I guess. Archives of Nethys is incredible!
    Speaking of weapons - one of my squee moments - weapons having unique effects (on crits and otherwise) so that idk a greataxe is not just a reflavored greatsword? MINDBLOWING. I LOVE IT. Weapon traits are awesome.

However, in pathfinder 2e, you get 3 actions. Everything you do takes some amount of actions unless its free. This makes it much easier to strategize and have far more potentially complex and significant turns.

    I like ttrpgs, but I don't usually get to play them enough to be dedicated to one particular system. That said, it's been a while since I did much with pathfinder. So when this whole recent debacle wound up directing me back there I was a little disheartened to learn there was a new edition and my current rulebook wouldn't work. Christmas had just passed and I didn't really have the funds to justify buying a new rule book. Then I watch your video and learn where I can find all the rules online for the full legal price of free. You are doing the lords work. Keep it up.

    1. The game is insanely GM friendly because the XP budget system for building encounters actually works well.
    2. Math is tight and works. Every +1 matters, and -1 is a hindrance, especially because of how crits work (+10 above AC I'd a crit, 10 below is a critical fumble).
    3. 3 action economy is a godsend.
    Game's not hard. But this video is a good primer

    I've started playing PF2e couple months ago. One of the major differences between PF2e and D&D5e I've found is how well the PF2e CRB is organized when it comes to navigation AND character creation. I really felt eased into making exactly the character I wanted to make as I've been gradually introduced to the mechanics and it was all enhanced by how smooth the process is going from chapter to chapter.

    The one thing that really saddens me is that the system is clearly not built for rolling stats. I love rolling stats, because it is such an amazing way to get inspired for character builds without feeling like I'm compelled to powergame when I have choice to allocate scores, and therefore should always boost particular stats for particular classes. Rolling is one another cool way to get inspiration for different characters that I wouldn't necessarily have thought of making before.

    • @poke_onix9235
      @poke_onix9235 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have a complete opposite view, especially when it comes to balancing characters, but I understand that rolling for stats is fun for some people. There is an alternate rule for it, but as you said, it's built for choosing stats rather than rolling

    Good video. I played D&D from 1980 to about 2018. When V 4 came out, the group I play with stayed on V3.5. Then about 2018 we switched to Pathfinder and are now using Pathfinder 2E. Took a while but, I love PF2e. The three action per round seems to me to allow more flexibility to the character while being simpler than the myriad of action variations available in D&D 3.5. The major differences you mentioned all seem to be improvements, though others might disagree. Though to be fair I haven’t played D&D V 4 or V 5 so cannot do a direct comparison.
    Thanks for the information.

    I kinda feel like point 5, the teamwork portion, kinda applies to the majority of all TTRPGs, including 5e. Bonuses from other classes, debuffs from other classes and action economy increasing with more individuals on a particular side.

    • @owenreynolds8718
      @owenreynolds8718 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, Action Economy issues are the same in either system. The last bit about Pathfinder's 3 actions/round making it matter more didn't even make sense (in an otherwise good video). Either way, 3 vs. 2 is 50% more actions (and reactions and bonus actions). Even Nonat got confused saying "that's 9 more actions" (9 vs. 6 is 3 more).

    4:10 I think you undersell the system here TBH.
    The more interesting point IMHO is that you can have a 18 even if you don't take the archetypal ancestry for what you want.
    Except if you take an ancestry with a flaw in the specific ability score you "have to" target, you're assured you can have your 18.
    ... And even if you take a counterintuitive ancestry, the last errata even make the whole "ancestry have specific boost" optional and let you just pick whatever you want (I'm personally not a fan, but I understand it sucks to have a character concept held back by the mechanics).

    My personal favorite is that attack of opportunity is no longer a reaction everyone gets, but mainly "bosses" and mid level feats for melee classes that I found made my party, the dm and myself more willing and able to move our characters around the board and not just stand in one position the whole fight.
