This place should be considered a “Historic Building” it should be preserved for future generation’s to enjoy.
Nobody in Hollywood gives a shit about preserving very much at all. In a state that squanders so much money on nonsense, you'd think they'd be interested in preserving a large part of what made it special. It's ridiculous how much has already been lost. I grew up watching old movies and I've read tons of books on the golden age of Hollywood and it's stars and when I started planning a trip out there to see things, I came to the conclusion it just wasn't a priority. So much is gone it's actually just depressing. It's also borderline criminal.

For a short time (6 months) in 2012 I worked at the Valvoline oil change across the street. Mr Barris was a daily fixture as I would see him almost everyday. I had a habit of always yelling "Good Morning" to him and he was always sweet enough to give me a wave. He always drove his (in)famous kustomized Prius. That thing was his ugliest creation, but it was a rolling billboard for him. I ran across the street a few times as we needed certain filters that we didn't have. The family ended up leasing out their garage to an Armenian mechanic that kept busy, sad to see no business going on now. When I heard of his passing 3 years later, it was a very sad moment. I do think I was fortunate enough to yell good morning and wave to the legend. RIP Mr Barris.

Growing up in the 60's & 70's I was amazed by George Barris creations I built every model car of them I could get. Several years later at the James Dean festival in Fairmount, Indiana I met my idol George Barris & got to shake his hand and get a picture with him. It really made my day.

I live in GA & my favorite thing to do when I got home from school was to watch the Munsters rerun on TBS Funtime and eat a snack. Since we lived so close to downtown Atl, the picture was so clear with the UHF round antenna (our rabbit ears had tin foil on them). I can remember the network always ran the Funtime block of shows between 3:05 to 6:05 always 5mins after the 30min blocks & depending on when the Braves were on, I stayed with my Grandparents a lot & my grandmother always kept it on TBS. I've seen every episode multiple times of all the shows they ran into the midnight hour. She loved Dark Shadows the most at noon then we would turn it over to Days of our lives and Another World then switch back to the Brady Bunch, Scooby Doo, The Addams Family, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Partridge Family and on and on of all those great shows!

One of my favorite horror movies "The Car" was made from Barris Kustoms too!!
@Tamky west Actually, the top wasn't chopped - they raised the upper fender line as a shortcut, as chopping would have required custom glass. 99.9% of online info sources have it wrong. It's one of my favorite movie cars, and I used to own a '69 Mark III Continental
Like so many SoCal guys, my dad customized cars for extra money while he was in college in the early sixties. I learned how to chop, channel and section a car from my dad and he learned from George and guys like him. The stuff my son can do to a car in a very real sense can be attributed to the influence of Barris and the Southern California car culture of the fifties and sixties.

The " Monkeemobile " for the Monkees was a classic Barris also ..Very cool car !!
Dean Jeffries and Dick dean designed and built it, Barris did a few little details to finish it off

Yes, they should've turned that building to a museum. It would be great to show others how historic George Barris was in Hollywood
George was a very friendly guy, I dropped by in the early 80's and he gave me a tour of the showroom only ,and we talked for about 30 minutes. Rest In Peace George.
The man the myth and unfortunately now the legend rest in peace George you will sadly and surely be missed.

Barris was called the 'King of the Customizers' for a good reason. He was early and unusually creative and talented. He was 1 person in all of car customizing. Big Daddy Roth with the 'Rat Fink' creation was another who was well-known.
Dragula was built to win back the family car at the drag strip...🤘😆
I've had the pleasure of meeting George Barris, and pinstriping with some of his good friends. Life long memories. Sad to see this... I wish I could change it. People need to see his work.
I don’t know if you still can but in the past Richard Peters welcomed visitors. Sad that they haven’t made George Barris’ building a landmark. He did amazing work. RIP

I was lucky enough to go there in the late 70’s. We met George briefly. Spent about a hour just walking around. I also got to see a lot of his customs at the Grand National Roadster Show in Oakland. Great vlog.
I've had the pleasure of visiting with George and got a tour in the back area. Went back twice more. Neat guy, great family. Hope younger guys pickup the void in the "Kustom Kar" industry. RIP George and brother Sam.

I know they have the Batmobile at shoes, but is always roped off. Yes, to sit in it would be awesome. Even at 55, I’m still a kid.
I was such of fan of George his cars really changed my life and I was lucky enough to have gotten to meet him when I was 16 I've always wanted to go to his shop and see everything in person sad to see its going away it really should have been turned into a museum because it's such a historic place thankyou for posting
Wow, I didn't know you did this video. Somehow completely missed it. I used to set up cars for Barris at car shows. I came on to the show scene in the 70's and became a champion in 1983/84. My neighbor is George's good friend who recently sold all of his Barris collection. I got first pick and came away with some iconic stuff.

To say " a true artist" is an understatement.
I was visiting my dad in Idaho and saw a live auction on tv ( I think , but not sure ) it was Barrett/Jackson ( might have been the other auction) where he signed a batmobile on stage prior to it selling. that's when I found out my dad (step) knew him personally from his days restoring classics and building resto-mods in so-cal, he said they'd talk about cars or grab a burger and talk about cars 🤣🤣(imagine that) my cousin has a shirt that he gave to dad and on the back he wrote .. " run while you can it's a disease not a hobby" .... R.I.P both of you ( I miss you dearly Dad♥️)
I CAN'T believe that someone in Los Angeles CAN'T come to the rescue and save this place by declaring it a "LANDMARK" to be preserved, as is, forever! It deserves that for all the TV and movie history it's tied directly to! Where's JAY LENO when you need him!!!

Sad to say this guys but Jay's no spring chicken and will be gone sooner than later. We need someone in their 20's that will be able to work and carry on the legend for decades to come and continue to educate future generations.

Hollywood and LA's power elite in general do not care about history and sentimentality. They tear down iconic and historic buildings around the area all the time!
They are about living in the moment and building McMansions to satisfy their narcissism.
Nothing is permanent -- especially in the Los Angeles area!

Barris did a sleek '63 Buick Riviera with a custom 1/2 roof for the episode "The Duplicate Man" from the "Outer Limits" series. The "Ala Kart" should be in a museum.
The Ala Kart should be in the Smithsonian ! or possibly the Henry Ford Museum
Fascinating! Loved seeing the Munster car and the Batmobile.
I remeber being at Barrett-Jackson when the batmobile sold for 4.6 million dollars I remeber standing in the auction room when it sold just watching. It was so cool to George Barris up there with it. I'll never forget it and the winner Mr. champagne saying it came down to a coin toss when they interviewed him about it. For a wile it stayed here in Phoenix Arizona down the road a bit from me as in a few miles.

That’s just so sad that that place isn’t going to be a museum. I knew of his work but didn’t put a face or name to him until I saw him on The Girls Next Door . He customized Bridget’s car rims with Playboy bunny spinners! What a amazing man. RIP George ❤️

This is a perfect thing for Valley Relics Museum to get involved with! Hopefully it can be preserved as it sits. I remember George would let locals come in and look around, but didn't like tourists.
Cool vid. Was lucky enough to visit George there a few years back - coordinated via his daughter. He was very gracious and generous with his time and the place was like a museum. The Peterson Car Museum should rebuild part of the shop into their museum as a tribute. Sad to see the place closed 😢 A real piece of Hollywood history.

Unfortunately all legends go and at least we have the memories- watched batman, the munsters and beverly hillbilles as a kid-and on a black and white set we didn't get a color TV until 74, so I still enjoy such shows as the twilight, zone, hogan heroes in B&W (a few) benny hill etc.
George Barris custom cars used on TV shows had a huge impact on my childhood living in the UK the TV was escaping the drab winter nights.
I was in LA back in the '80s taking a car to my little brother stationed in Long Beach. After leaving Universal Studio one afternoon we just happen to pass the Barris Shop and stopped. While George was not there the man that was there took us around and showed us the cars that were not on the tour circuit and told us a few stories. There were several Lead Sled cars, one of the Batmobile cars and a few other hot rods with the Batmobile being the only TV/Movie car we saw but it was cool just to be there and get to see where George worked.
There was a showroom on Hollywood Boulevard that I used to walk by and saw the batmobile and the Munster mobile in
The word beautiful really describes his kustom shop. It smacks with a 60's vibe.
I was fortunate to meet George Barris on one of his tours to the Volo Auto Museum outside Chicago when I managed a radio station there. He was so nice to everyone, very engaged with his fans and us car nuts too. I have a picture of me sitting in one of the original (made for the '66 TV series) Batmobiles! Meeting George was a dream for a kid who watched Batman, the Monkees, the Munsters and many of the shows and movies featuring his cars. Thank you for sharing his story and for this video.
I'm always trying to keep myself aware of how things change over the years, and what may be here today, may be gone tomorrow. One thing that will always exist is "change"

I am 67 years young (NOT bragging)...I have been a George Barris fan my whole life. As a kid, I saw Mr. Barris' work in car magazines as early as the early 1960's......When he made a car for TV Batman and also the two,yes, TWO vehicles for my other favorite show,the Munsters, I was in love. ( With the cars that is !!)..He made many others like the Monkeemobile......When he passed in November of 2015, it was the end of an era. Godspeed Mr. Barris !!
I am so sad to see a part of major Southern California automotive history disappear, on many a trip to LA, I'd enjoy going by the Barris shop to see that, because not only would I drive over to Autobooks to check out the latest books, there's also driving by Warner Ranch Facility & see the fountain & the buildings used on Bewitched, I feel honored that years ago in Ft Lauderdale I met George Barris at a car auction, got his autograph, & checked out 2 of his creations for Sonny & Cher, their matching Mustangs, so with a tear in my eye, I will definitely miss seeing a well known landmark in North Hollywood, I do hope the family will definitely plan to create a museum as a tribute, the last remaining way to remember the legend

I was lucky enough to have got a tour from George himself about 20 years ago I was advertising my DJ company he wasn't buying I knew he would not but he saw I was excited and in awe so he let me look around and ended up doing an impromptu tour it was epic cuz he did not do it much even way back then!

I had the honor of meeting george barris at his car show at culver city in 2015. A couple of months before he die. I remember he was such a nice car. He was a people person. He love to talk. He would tell you stories,show you details about his cars. Then he wanted to know about you. I was really sad when I heard he die six months later. Now hearing that barris kustom is closing. It makes me sad again. It's like george die twice. He really loved that shop.

I met George many times in his later years, what touched me was almost every time it was at a big event and he was swamped with fans yet he always took the time to look mevin the eye and say " hi " or something to address me. I cant remember the exact year, '02 or '03 but I was over in canada in Chattam at a huge car show. I drove my General lee there but it was not in the show. George had the '66 batmobile and the batman returns Duck the penguin drove there. I was talking to my friend in line waiting to talk to George who was about 5 feet away. My friend said " too bad your general isn't in this show" george stopped who he was talking to came over and asked me " you have a general let? Where is it?" I told him it was in the parking lot and he lit up all excited saying " bring it here I want it here!" Now my General was not a perfect show piece. It had the very used look. But it was parked between the batmobile and the duck. George treated me and my friend really great. People thought it was one from the show, I got into an argument with a guy because he insisted it was a screen used car and I kept telling him I built it that way. It was a great time!

I met Barris and his lovely wife at a car show they were so down to earth and very nice!! I met him at the Grand National Roadsters show in Oakland in the early nineties got a autograph he took his time to speak with us for a while very nice RIP
I was extremely lucky to sit in the Batmobile drivers seat for a photo it made my day since it by far my favorite car.
Met him once walking at the SEMA show. About a few years before he was gone. Still had a sharp mind.
I remember seeing George on American Pickers and loved him , the shows and the cars when I was young. I so loved getting to see his daughter on pickers.
What a shame !!! Ala-Kart was always my Fav Hotrod.
Rest in peace George , build a car or two for the angels. They will surely enjoy them as we have the ones you made for all of us.

WOW , am so so shocked about the news. Thought for sure his Daughter would've kept the doors open for business and so many fans to come and enjoy wow so shocked. I've been thinking about taking a trip there as well. I once had the privilege of talking to his Daughter on the phone good people. I missed the Garage sale U mention in the volg would've loved to bought something for sure. Am a very big car guy and know just about everything to my knowledge about Mr Barris such a shame to hear it's all gone away WOW. R I P. George, thanks for your volging of Mr Barris !!! Joe

I was able to visit the shop and meet George Baris back in 05. I have a picture of me sitting in the Munster Koach.

Me and my dad met George Barris in person at a car show in my hometown back in 2008 and I have pictures of the original 1966 Batmobile and the Muster’s Koach and it was an such and honor to meet him and to see those cars.
"World of Wheels" tour 1969 Spokane, WA Barris had all his tv cars. I was 7 and in complete heaven.
