From Forest to Bottle - Glenmorangie A Tale of Forest Review

  • Today I taste the Glenmorangie A Tale of Forest. A recent addition to the 'a tale of' series from Glenmorangie, this single malt is made from barley kilned with woodland botanicals, a first for Glenmorangie.
The botanicals used to kiln the barley were juniper berries, birch bark and heather flowers, these all got mixed with a little peat and matured in ex-bourbon barrels, many of them refills.
This is a whisky which needs time both in bottle once opened and in the glass. The neck pour and the first few drams might be disheartening but when given the chance, it does open up to be a beautifully nature inspired whisky.

An old school take on a contemporary spirit! I love that John, fantasticly short and direct way to describe it, thanks 😃🥃

I got the thyme, honey, juniper, grass, firewood and a beautiful hit of heather on nosing and on my palette! This is a really nice expression in this series. I was given bottle as a gift and I am not sure what the cost is in Vancouver - throughout Canada. I'm guessing it will be too much to add a bottle to my bar unless I suggest this beauty to my whisky club and we can share it! I didn't connect with the Winter expression either but I do love the Cake and I am very eager to get into exploring A Tale of Tokyo - very excited - from everything I have heard now from reviews, I think I will enjoy it very much! I haven't had a lot of Glenmorangie but I did have the Signet and it was truly magnificent! What a treat! In the Forest expression I do really love the barley I get on my palette and what truly tastes like wood was burning outside and rain naturally put out the fire! It's a lovely flavour, quite mild, not really smoky but more woodsy! Thanks for the awesome review! I just watched your excellent review of A Tale of Tokyo and I feel excited to have fun and explore it. I hope you are well! Cheers! Oh! The Tale of Tokyo cost for me locally is $135.00 Canadian before taxes.

Hi Christine, thank you for the support and watching the video. I'm glad to know you liked the whisky and the review. I completely agree with all your notes. Forest is a good whisky delivering on the promise.
Glenmorangie does solid whiskies, sometimes falls victim to the marketing juts like it's cousin from Islay, Ardbeg!
The Signet is an amazing whisky! I absolutely adore it, like a tiramisu in a glass! Such an elegant and delicious dram, can't fault it.
I know Canada is not super lucky when it comes to prices but I wouldn't know if 135 is fair for Tokyo or not. All I can say is, it's an easy sipper, tasty whisky.
Thank you again for your comments, always appreciate the support

Very good review! I too found this a pleasant surprise when I tried it last summer.

Tale of Tokyo is extremely interesting... not a permashelf but definitely worth trying.

Nice review. My wife and I really enjoyed our first bottle of Tale of the Forest and just opened a second. We found an online special for 47GBP over the holidays and picked up 2 backup bottles. We thought it was particularly interesting how much the taste was similar to the smell of a damp forest walk with a campfire far in the distance. Plenty of suggestion from the marketing materials but I think they nailed what they were going for.

Thank you, glad you liked it 😃 Yeah I agree with you. Once it opened up, I think they nailed the assignment and made a beautiful and unique whisky. I really enjoyed it, let's see how the Tale of Tokyo is now 😁🥃

@@thewhiskyenthusiast We liked the Tale of the Forest enough that we picked up Tale of Tokyo too. I'll be interested to hear your take. We thought it was quite interesting, but not as transportive and unique as the Forest. To us the Tokyo is very cask driven and not typical Glenmo, but heavily woody and we are not as drawn to it as the Forest.

@@FranzG2 Yeah apart from selectively using Mizunara casks, it doesn't sound very interesting but I will try and and make a video of it. Have you tried Tale of Winter or Cake?

@@thewhiskyenthusiast I haven't tried the earlier Tales, but they didn't sound all that interesting to me.

Tale of Winter was nothing special, I did a review of it last year but the Tale of Cake was absolutely delicious! It is for some time now absurdly priced so definitely not worth the money now.@@FranzG2
