I remember this. We were panicked because my Aunt and Uncle had just bought a house in Antioch and that's the tunnel used to get there. We didn't know if they were in the tunnel cause they had spent the day in SF
I fell asleep that night with my radio on KCBS. I thought I was dreaming a nightmare when the dispondent reporter was telling the horrors of the people burning in the tunnel, the wind creating a blowtorch effect, the steel melted into the concrete.. the tunnel still has uneven pavement in 2023.
I drive the bay area freeways all day, everyday. And everyday I see gas and tanker trucks hauling back and forth over the Bay Bridge and at least once a day and once a week Hazardous trucks in the tunnels. I've seen CHP drive right past them and/or watch them from near the tunnels. (There's your story.) I have lots of video and it's mostly one hauler. If one gas tanker blows on the old side of the Bay Bridge near the cable anchors the whole will come crashing down and CHP could care less.
At 2:05 in the video you will see a sign that regulates the hours a hazmat tanker can use the tunnel. This does not apply to other trucks hauling hazmat. Only a tanker. So maybe just maybe the trucks you see are 100% legit allowed in the tunnels. As a trucker I will attest that if CHP saw something they thought was wrong with a truck hauling hazmat they would stop that truck so fast. The fines and points can add up super quick.
Actually you should be surprised since for the last several decades statistics from the USDOT and IITS has data showing female drivers have far lower rates of accidents and moving violations than their male counterparts. As a result, women also pay lower insurance premiums. I know this because I’m a man who works in the insurance industry.

RIP to those people. Now, if only Bores 1-3 could look as nice to drive in as Bore 4.
