- In this video, I’m sharing five helpful tips for woodworking with limited tools. He demonstrates how to use hand screw clamps to hold pieces of wood together while you're working on them. These clamps are a great alternative to using a vise or a clamping system that requires power.

Nice presentation. These wood clamps were a pain to use in wood shop in high school. We weren’t instructed in the use of them. But now they should be owned by every wood worker.

Thank you Glen! This was very helpful! I started woodworking because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and I needed to be able to make things, and do things with my hands, it's sort of therapy. But, my disability means that I do need as much of a "helping hand" as I can get. Someone these tricks will come in handy. I'm particularly grateful for the idea of using the clamps for edge banding and planing because I do not have space for a dog table.
Hand screw clamps are very useful for holding small items to keep your hands away from a spinning drill bit. Never considered using it with a regular clamp to hold a board vertically. Nice!

I never thought of using the clamp styles in tandem; that is why I think to watch your channel though - you are always teaching me something.
I like the idea of clamping the plywood or other pieces to edge sand. I'd normally stand there wobbling around with it between my legs/feet trying to keep it in place. Thanks for the tips!
You can also find these clamps at Antique stores as well. If you are doing repairs on fine furniture and use these clamps you can cover the jaw faces with a piece of leather. They will grip super tight and not slip or damage the finish of the piece you are working on. Great video Glen!!

Thanks for these tips. I was introduced to these clamps 60 years ago in 7th grade shop. But was left on my own in putting them to use. Your tips opened my eyes to ways to use these more effectively. That last one…that will come in very handy.
Sometimes I wish I had a vise, but not often enough to buy one. I do have a couple of Jorgenson hand screw clamps and now I know how to use as a vise. TYSM for this video.

Love your show. Been using "Jorgensen Clamps" what they are called here in Canada, for five decades and truly are a must for every out of shop project, in shop project, camping and imagination is only limit to their versatility. The largest set (14") are so old the fire-branded Patent# is barely visible but looks like it starts with the year 18??. Those and my Yankee #31 push drills and Yankee #41 ratchet drivers are indispensable.

@@DIYCreators My bad. The patent # is from the 1800s. The largest(very old)set I have is 14" but for unique applications I have screwed extenders on. LOL

Great video on these wood clamps. I’ve cut grooves in the clamping surfaces with holes perpetual through the clamp to use in drilling pipes and dowels. Best use is getting your fingers out of the way.

Outstanding video, I never would have thought of utilizing these clamps like you demonstrated. Last time I used this style of clamps was in Junior High Shop class in 1977.

Great video. Personally they are my favorite goto clamps. When i first started out, an old timer told me that the "proper" way was have the left hand hold the furthest handle and only use the right hand to turn the other handle. Left is always stationary. LOL

Great stuff. I suggest you at least sand off the finish from the handles, but for best grip, use hockey tape!

They're old fashioned, they're goofy, they're crazy......... But having a couple of "large" and "small" on hand will save your butt in time, effort, and money when push comes to shove back..... I know!

@DIY Creators I was a exec producer previously and then retired to teaching. After the years, I have fallen out of practice and have sold all my gear. I am now shooting on a cellphone without even a mic lol. I will get a mic and a boom with recorder in a while, but $$s for a new camera rig would eat into my woodworking budget. I'll just do down and dirty videos about odd topics. Yours strikes me as a well produced, definitive presentation. Good job.
I’ve always known theses as hand-screws. I had a female apprentice working for me and we needed larger clamps on the job, so I sent her out to buy 4 hand screws. 1/2 hour later she came back and told me she didn’t have the nerve to ask for a hand screw

Put a pair of 'V' notches in the inside of the jaws - it will make it easy to clamp round things like pipe and dowels so they don't move around & with copper pipe you don't have to clamp so hard the pipe distorts. You can also use the notches to keep rope or cable taught when you need to stretch it for various reasons without having to tie knots in the rope.
The wide narrow v was used to make ben1 I explained earlier
Sometimes they loosen when sawing a clamped workpiece. Then you have to stop and retighten. Any tips on preventing them from loosening?
