I made 4 12" hand screws totally from scratch 30 years ago. I had a tap and die set but needed to buy a 3/8" left hand tap and die to make my own steel pieces. Made my own handles as well. It was a fun project and saved me a few dollars. Of course I had all the power tools to do it so the only hard part was cutting the threads which was all done by hand. Mine were also made from white oak. Making your own tools gives a lot of satisfaction. :)
I store my screw clamps in the same place, clamped to a joist!

Actually, I would be a happier man.
You know I seen some of this style of clamp at garage and estate sales and had forgotten how useful they are for a lot of things other then gluing up 2 parts.
If you need to cut hinges into a door 2 screw clamps can hold the door on its side, you can use them to hold templates in place hold tools upside down , its endless just how much you can use them for, and I passed them up at the sale thinking id never use them and went for the quick clamps.
I may just make me a few sets of them I have the stock on walnut and popular
But id rather have hard maple and white oak .
I use them all the time for working on small parts. Even better for power tools when you need to put small parts into a blade.
All jokes aside the pair you made me from the kit I sent you, have only needed wax added once, they still shed glue like a duck does water

Tastes just like Mama used to make.
When drilling through metal with a handheld power drill I use the torque setting on the drill on a low enough setting so that if I put too much lateral pressure on the bit and risk breaking it the torque limiter triggers and stop the bit from spinning rather than break it. It saved many of my drill bits!!!
I had that on, but did not set it low enough for the first break. the next ones it was on the lowest setting and still broke.

I saw thosw kits, i wish they would make some that came in larger sizes that you can typically buy. 14"-18" would be cool. Can find them at harbor freight from 8-12" as well
you can make then any size you want the hardware. there is nothing stopping you from putting longer boards on them.

Would be interesting to see a 'competition' video of yourself and a 'modern' (read power tools) of you both making something along the lines of the clamps comparing accuracy, functionality, time and then aesthetics. Clamps might not be the best choice, maybe a hand plane, one metal fabrication and one wooden.
If you run out of wooden clamps does that mean you're NOT screwed?

I wonder whether using a single through hole and a tapered reamer from each end would work to make the tilt clearance without weakening too much. It would simplify layout and process.
I think that would work pretty well. Maybe using a stepped drill. It shouldn't weaken it that much.
It has been my experience that Oak makes the clamps heavier than desired. I suggest a lighter wood such as cypress, red wood even popular. Strength should not be an issue. Weight will
be, especially on the larger ones.
I actually made a set out of poplar a few years ago and ended up breaking one. Oak is actually on the weaker side for them due to being ring porous. Generally, the best wood to make them out of would be something like a straight grained maple.
That was great. Show to do and what not to do. Saves those who follow a lot of grief.
q. On a kit theme, can a length of 2" band saw blade be used to make a Roubo resaw saw. And not only can it be used but would it do a good job?
I have seen several people do that. You would want teeth on the smaller size for that saw. Something around 2-4 PPI.

If you're talking about the one at the end where I drove in the pins. That is a chasing mallet. It's designed for carving and metals and you tap on the chisels with it. I believe I got this one off of Amazon actually. But that was a long time ago.

The Garmin watch is for ultra running and is my main smartwatch. The Fitbit on the other hand is because the rest of my family uses Fitbit and it's kind of fun to challenge them occasionally.

Why did you decide against a jig, seems to me that a Jig or three would have removed the need to do any marking?
Has each one of these are different and each one has different holes. I would have to make a lot of different jigs and to do that we take more time and effort than it would just eyeball it. If I were doing these in production then definitely but just doing two of each size. It's not worth it.
I hear boiled linseed oil always recommended the most for tools, but I just can not stand the smell. Is there a type that doesn't leave that smell all over the tool and all over your hands every time you touch it? Or what's the best alternative that won't smell?
the home made stuff I use smells different, but Tung oil is basically the same thing but with a different smell. jut make sure it is actual Tung oil and not oil mixed with other things as a lot of it is.

Was wondering if so much boiled linseed oil on the skin would be toxic, but according to the first articles I found, it's probably ok.
I use homemade boiled linseed oil rather than the store-bought. Homemade doesn't have any extras added to it to speed up the drying. It's just a polymerized linseed oil. You can drink it if you want to. But if I use this stuff from the store I still use gloves.
How is getting the pieces you start with cut on a powered saw different from any other build? I doubt any of the sawyers and sawmills you buy your lumber from saws by hand?
A lot of the lumber I get comes from a pit saw or I rived it out. But even the lumber I purchase from a store or mill is generally possessed by hand here.
Snide remark: You don't need to put those pins through the handles if they're epoxied on, do you? You could have saved yourself five busted drill bits!
The big benefit to the pins is that they will help later on in their life. As the wood expands and contracts and the steel does not, the epoxy will lose its strength in a few years.

I would like to build a couple of them but for some reason Taytools doesn't ship to most European countries, so no luck for me . . .
Center drill bits to start holes and you break a lot fewer drill bits.
The problem wasn't the starting. It was coming out the other side of the threaded rod. If I didn't have the clutch set just right it would catch and because it's so thin it would just snap.
Don't epoxy the handles on you cross drill a 1/8" hole in the Ferrell, wood handle and down into the all thread all the way acrossed then use a cotter key to lock everything into place or pen over a pin you can use animal hyde glue or wood glue to tighten the fit or drill the handle end hole under sized so you screw it on making a sort of tap end on the all thread with a file or grinder.
A brass pin is plenty strong enough to hold the handle on as is a cotter key.
And you can remove either of them to take the handles off at some point.even a wooden dowl will work.
You dont need to glue the handles on the orignal clamps were not glued on.

Can't you just but the all thread and pivot bushings and turn your own handles?
All thread won't work. One side is right hand and the other end is left hand thread.
I DISAGREE!! You can have "Enough clamps". However it is impossible to have too many clamps.
