When I was younger, I always wished I could meet Erik. I always wanted to tell him that I would always be his friend, no matter how his face looked. That's why this play always gets to me
This show always gets to me. Even though it's a musical, I never compare it to the ALW version. It's only on the same line of comparison as a version of the Phantom of the Opera. Like Richard White says, the story is completely different, the pace, etc. I love it. This version of Erik is truly the sweetest, I would totally marry him! XD
That ending is so sad. Richard White has such a great emotional range as the Phantom. He completely deserved that standing ovation. This musical has wonderful music, a great storyline, and the majority of the lyrics are beautiful. While the Webber production focused on more of the mystery of the Phantom, this show focuses on the very human side of Erik and the back story of the characters. Both productions are great, and right now I don't know if I could choose one over the other!
I am not an emotional man, especially when it comes to musicals, or any theater for that matter, but this musical always, invariably, brings me to cry at the end. This has to be one of my all-time favorite musicals, and Richard White is the most amazing Phantom to ever have lived.
I love this version of the story it's a lot better than The Phantom of the Opera and I don't usually say that. Erik dying is really sad and Christine was beautiful. Their love was beautiful. I loved the picnic scene on part 3 and my fave song is You Are Music. This was such a good musical and instead of telling POTO ALW should tell this version. Love it to bits. I love u Erik!
Wow I remember seeing richard in this at the california theatre in riverside In 1992 or 93 anyway when he was In the middle of reheasal for beauty and the beast so probably 1992 great performance . Was 10yrs old at the time been Invovled with alw production but this version will always have a place in my heart was the first I saw. Thank you for posting this. Richard white is a very nice person and gifted singer and actor got to meet him one time was wonderful
@PhantomoftheOperaOG I don't know how someone could NOT cry at the ending. I already knew how it was going to end (from the Charles Dance version) and I still cried!
ALW version, while nice, never has brought me to tears but the Yeston/Kopit version always does. I think it's superior to the ALW version in every way. The music is beyond wonderful and the book is so much more moving.I wish this version could come to Broadway.
I think however, there's one way in which the Webber version tops this and is probably the reason it's had the success we've seen: action and singing occur simultaneously. The entire thing is sung-through and all major plot points occur during a song rather than just before or after. That's the one thing I'd like this version to have.
@PhantomoftheOperaOG Exactly! I was lucky enough to work backstage on a production of this show, and the actor that played Erik didn't wear any disfiguring makeup, because that wasn't what the role was about. I really, REALLY love this version of the story.
Oh so Sad....i can't believe i'm tearing up. That was so sad when she sang her reprise of "you are music" to erik as he lay dying. And then, *heart tug* Erik's father holds him in his arms....so sad.
It's a very touching scene between Erik and his father, mostly because of Erik's acting. I don't think much of the lyrics, although I like the music very much.
@KyrieGloria You're very welcome! I saw a production of it in '06 and I had no clue how much I'd become addicted, I'm so sad I didn't audio bootleg it! I posted this because you're right, there were hardly any vids on here and this version deserves more attention
OMG this is beautiful :O I am crying at that ending because it is so sad :'( It took a lot of courage for him to kill his son like that and when Christine sung that song I am now like an emotional wreck :'(
Much as I would like to see Erik have a happy ending, it would be missing the point of the original story entirely. This is NOT a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It is more along the lines of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or Frankenstein than that. It isn't fair, and it isn't supposed to be, but it is realistic.
@MrShaun42088 I agree. I also cried when Erik talks to Gerard before/during "You are my own". But I ball my eyes out whenever I see Christine sings to him before he dies.
Really? ho great but sush a shame I live so far away from the usa :) would love to see this show the songs are so beautiful. Lucky for you that you can go enjoy it :) Love the song christine sings to make him remove his mask and what he is singing here my gosh ... Love phantom so much :)
@phangirl1986 I had no knowledge of the show when I was it live in '06 so it was a complete shock to me, probably why I bawled. When I got the Dance version I still cried at the end. My neighbor cried at the end too when I shared the movie with her. Now I only cry when I'm watching it with someone else because I know it's coming, and watching it with someone else, espeially if they haven't seen it, gives it more of an edge..make sence?
@MrShaun42088 I agree...when I saw this show live (Not the one on this bootleg) I bawled and my Grandma thought I was weird...then when I bought the CD I cried during that song because of the memory, and my mom was all "What's your problem!" and I was all "He died in this song!" and Mom was all "..."
they made a movie of this version in 92, it's my fav! i still wait for a version where the Phantom gets Christine in the end and Raul/Phillipe dies... or goes away...
@lbjb247 Yes, I love You are my Own! I wish he didn't have to die, though I had a feeling he would. You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I have the soundtrack and love it, I have the libretto as well
@megarouge2001 I hope you had fun! I hear in some productions of it they do put make up on the actors though, probably to help the actresses playing Christine. I was luck enough to see a production of this in '06 and Erik must've had make up on, because at the same time two older women in the audince who could probably see it gasped and said "Oh my goodness!"
As much as I love Richard White, I preferred Xander Chauncey... Too bad there are no videos :( Thank you for posting this though! :D Too many people have never seen this one.
This version of Phantom is translated into Japanese and played in 2004, 2011 byTakarazuka company. So I got to like it as a Japanese. And I was really impressed when I watched this scene in English, which shows exactly what line means. I really want to watch the rest of this play. Is there any record ? I wish I could watch. Sorry for my poor English!
@MotownCountry Actully, it was made in '90, but I agree with the other things you said! In the '89 version, Raoul does die, but Christine dosen't go with Erik
wahoo i didn't know that version. Where was it played, Who is playing christine? The phantom? It's weird to see here that Erick has a familly but it's a good thing. Where was it produced? US?
Yeah it does answer my question yes! Thanks for the informations. I had no idear that there was an other kind of musical version of Phantom. But I love phantom as well, love the spirit of the story. But Richard my gosh what a voice here......... Do you think that is show is till running somewhere ?
@Rurushufan2010 In that case, I'd look at the about me on our profile. Weather or not you belive it it's up to you, but if you do........thank you for your kind words. :) (Yeston)Erik
@PhantomoftheOperaOGI was really trying with ken hill's version. I definetly don't like any of those songs. UG... I can tollerate 'Floating High Above' .... and was very interesting that they made a song around christine's dissapearance 'I see no sign'. And My Goodness, I HATED what they did to the torture chamber scene with the song 'What an Awful way to Perish' !! ---What an Awful song! ... I really prefer this version over that one any day. But will always love ALW's for a many reasons! :)
sorry all you Fans for the poor review... It wasn't as bad as i thought when i was just listening to the soundtrack. SEEING the play REALLY helped me like it More. i probably wouldn't watch it again....at least for like 10 years. then i might. i'd have to be Really Bored. So may things to say about this. i have many Likes and many Dislikes. There are parts that were Good and there were parts that were Bad. ...but in Webber's PHotO I didn't seem to have that problem ?? It's gotta be the music!!
I love Gaston Leroux's novel...but some versions sould Not be made. This was okay....definetly a good 20 feet behind webber's version, glad this wasn't an abomination like some of the movies. eee Gad! and this other musical phantom from ken hill, that was Really bad. so...this was better than Hills but worse than webbers. WHY? i was really irritated on how much they altered from the story. i can appreciate originality, but??? And it was lacking in good songs. they were too Opera like. :P
When I was younger, I always wished I could meet Erik. I always wanted to tell him that I would always be his friend, no matter how his face looked. That's why this play always gets to me
His pitiful "no's" before she takes off his mask before he dies are so heartbreaking.
Literally that’s what made me cry so hard watching the ending 😭
This show always gets to me. Even though it's a musical, I never compare it to the ALW version. It's only on the same line of comparison as a version of the Phantom of the Opera. Like Richard White says, the story is completely different, the pace, etc. I love it. This version of Erik is truly the sweetest, I would totally marry him! XD

Both productions are great, and right now I don't know if I could choose one over the other!
Yes, I personally consider this version to have more humanistic spirit than the Webber one
Another one of my favorites the ending makes me cry everytime and especially at Richard’s emotions he played the phantom fantastically
I am not an emotional man, especially when it comes to musicals, or any theater for that matter, but this musical always, invariably, brings me to cry at the end. This has to be one of my all-time favorite musicals, and Richard White is the most amazing Phantom to ever have lived.
Erik's deaths brings me to tears everytime
Nothing in ALW's Ver touches this moment
Oh dear the way he says "No" when Christine removes his mask in the end... *sniffles*
Because he was scared
I die every time
I love this version of the story it's a lot better than The Phantom of the Opera and I don't usually say that. Erik dying is really sad and Christine was beautiful. Their love was beautiful. I loved the picnic scene on part 3 and my fave song is You Are Music. This was such a good musical and instead of telling POTO ALW should tell this version. Love it to bits. I love u Erik!
If I was Richard; I would find it impossible not to play with my cape.
Saw this with Richard white 1990 know 41 I was 10 brings bk memories..love this version before my andrew Lloyd webber days
Wow I remember seeing richard in this at the california theatre in riverside In 1992 or 93 anyway when he was In the middle of reheasal for beauty and the beast so probably 1992 great performance . Richard white is a very nice person and gifted singer and actor got to meet him one time was wonderful
One reason I love the YK version so much is that you never see Erik's face.
I love this one and Webber's They are both great but in different ways.
"And I promise I'll never allow you to be on display!"
Urgggg that's when it gets to me :'(
I've always loved the song between Eric and the father. So sweet.
@PhantomoftheOperaOG I don't know how someone could NOT cry at the ending. I already knew how it was going to end (from the Charles Dance version) and I still cried!
I cried when Erik begged for death😭😭😭
ALW version, while nice, never has brought me to tears but the Yeston/Kopit version always does. I think it's superior to the ALW version in every way. The music is
beyond wonderful and the book is so much more moving.I wish this version could come to Broadway.
It was going to but Webber beat them to it.
I agree, it is by far the better version. I saw it a few times on stage and always cried
I think however, there's one way in which the Webber version tops this and is probably the reason it's had the success we've seen: action and singing occur simultaneously. The entire thing is sung-through and all major plot points occur during a song rather than just before or after. That's the one thing I'd like this version to have.

Thank you for sharing. It's one of my fave musical play. I cant help sobbing over You are my Own. I hv the songs from ITunes.
While I'm a huge fan of ALW's Phantom, this version hits me!
It's a very touching scene between Erik and his father, mostly because of Erik's acting. I don't think much of the lyrics, although I like the music very much.
Why can't Christine and Erik be together, ever?
Both the ALW version and this version make me cry at the end tbh.
@KyrieGloria You're very welcome! I saw a production of it in '06 and I had no clue how much I'd become addicted, I'm so sad I didn't audio bootleg it! I posted this because you're right, there were hardly any vids on here and this version deserves more attention
This is LND switched characters!! OMP!! Seriously... poor Erik. Gosh, I love him
Awesome. So good to see most of this show. Thanks so much for sharing. Truly some stunning moments.
OMG this is beautiful :O I am crying at that ending because it is so sad :'( It took a lot of courage for him to kill his son like that and when Christine sung that song I am now like an emotional wreck :'(
You are so awesome! i watched this a while ago and wished to see it again. I love this rendition of the POTO. Ahhh thank you for posting this up.
Poor Erik!! It's so sad!!!
So touched version, I love it. Very beautiful! The main charakters are sooo cute!
Why can't there be one Phantom play where Erik & Christine stay together & neither die???
That is the reason why fanfiction exists 😌😌
Much as I would like to see Erik have a happy ending, it would be missing the point of the original story entirely. This is NOT a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It is more along the lines of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or Frankenstein than that. It isn't fair, and it isn't supposed to be, but it is realistic.
Man, you mentioned two musicals I love TwT
i cried!
@MrShaun42088 I agree. I also cried when Erik talks to Gerard before/during "You are my own". But I ball my eyes out whenever I see Christine sings to him before he dies.
GOD THE FEELS
Thank you so much for posting this! I've been searching for this online for years! :-)
Why couldn't she have felt that way about his face earlier?
Well... that's basically the story of Love Never Dies.
Really? ho great but sush a shame I live so far away from the usa :) would love to see this show the songs are so beautiful. Lucky for you that you can go enjoy it :) Love the song christine sings to make him remove his mask and what he is singing here my gosh ... Love phantom so much :)
Who is Eirk! I love him sooo much.
Luke I'm your father.
Poor sweet Erik!
@phangirl1986 I had no knowledge of the show when I was it live in '06 so it was a complete shock to me, probably why I bawled. When I got the Dance version I still cried at the end. @Namia4 Richard White, the same who voiced Gaston in "Beauty and the Beast".
@MrShaun42088 Actully, ken hill's phantom is the phantom musical that closley resembles leroux's novel
they made a movie of this version in 92, it's my fav! i still wait for a version where the Phantom gets Christine in the end and Raul/Phillipe dies... or goes away...
@lbjb247 Yes, I love You are my Own! I wish he didn't have to die, though I had a feeling he would. You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I have the soundtrack and love it, I have the libretto as well
Richard rocks it... but it's his brother Robert who rocks my world!

@MotownCountry Actully, it was made in '90, but I agree with the other things you said! In the '89 version, Raoul does die, but Christine dosen't go with Erik
@MomoShiroChii Yeah, the ending really gets to you!

@megarouge2001 I love that too, his face is so hideious that no makeup does justice :)
Thank you & you're welcome!
I think I prefer the film version of this.
THAT'S IT?!!!!!
Yeah it does answer my question yes! Thanks for the informations. I had no idear that there was an other kind of musical version of Phantom. But I love phantom as well, love the spirit of the story. But Richard my gosh what a voice here......... Do you think that is show is till running somewhere ?
@Fandisgis Oh now that is cool thank!

Actully Carlotta was in the origonal too
@Rurushufan2010 In that case, I'd look at the about me on our profile. Weather or not you belive it it's up to you, but if you do........thank you for your kind words. :)
