LOL - loved how we can hear the rain near the end of the video! :-) I'm glad you mentioned items for a "cold weather kit" for your car. I learned about having one after the "blizzard of '78" when (saw this with my own eyes, not kidding) semi trucks were buried in snow drifts alongside the highways here in Ohio, & the drivers told how they survived for a few days in their cabs. My cold weather kit has candles, waterproof matches (instead of a lighter), a heat reflective blanket, some crackers/granola bars, and one more essential thing: a tin cup. The cup is for scooping & melting snow if you're stranded in the winter. It's tin, with a handle, so it can be held over a burning candle if needed (can't do that with plastic). Since our Secret Slob community is all over the world, it will be interesting to see what weather- and location-specific things people keep in their cars!
Thank you for showing the “real deal” on the before pictures. I don’t feel so bad now. I have three boys, two under the age of 6, so my can is usually messy. Just gives me some motivation to keep it clean.
Loved this one! Very helpful. TMI but ages ago in my first marriage when I was a battered wife, I kept an overnight bag in the trunk, fully packed with underwear, changes of clothes, cosmetics and such for my daughter and me in case we had to make an emergency getaway.
I keep a safety kit in my car, which came in handy one cold December night, when my kids and I returned from a party only to find that my husband had been called in to work for an emergency and we were locked out of the house. We had to sleep in the car, in the driveway, until he made it home in the early hours. Luckily we had sleeping bags and snacks, and the kids actually loved it 😆.
I remember the “mom van” when my four kids where home. Melted crayons in the back cup holder, baseball cleats In the back hatch area. It smelled like teenage boy feet all the time! A sippy cup of molded orange juice. Crushed cheerios and Goldfish in the seats. Even found a stash of USED q-tips in a side door pocket one time where one of my kids cleaned his ears on the way to school every morning. Eeeewwww! Also we called it the Gaggin’ Wagon because every single kid plus myself (when I was pregnant with number 4) and two dogs and our cat threw up in that van. When we finally traded it in (with more that 300k miles on it!) we were all so sad driving away from it. Seriously, we literally cried.
I used to keep a bag or two of kitty litter in the back in case of ice. It helped getting out of icy sloppy parking lots, drive ways or side road. Also an empty coffee can for the candle to sit in ( always remember to leave a window cracked open when using it to let oxygen in the car).
This is a great reminder. My poor vehicle is so dusty and needing a little love since I have really only been going grocery shopping over the last 5 months! 😜
😁that's how I feel after cleaning my car and also make the following announcement to the fam 😲"NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO EAT IN MY CAR" which never lasts long. 🤦♀️
I used to clean my car before going on a trip. That made me feel really good, getting into a clean shiny car. That all ended with Covid and Flylady! Getting into my car is special everyday!
Friday is car day for us, too! It is just us, but Montana is pretty dusty! IT depends what time of year, what is kept in our car. In winter, we must have survival, emergency supplies, trauma first aid, bear spray, etc.
Hope you had great trip! I just returned from vacationing in Michigan and my car is a mess and full of sand. It’s on the agenda tonight for a good wash and clean out too! /. Might I suggest adding a flashlight, handwarmers, paper towels with a grocery bag around them to keep clean, anda small fire extinguisher? Glad to see you!! Hugs from Ohio. 😃🌸💜. Oh I forgot. I keep a large ziplock between the front seats. All extra food napkins are stored there soI always have extra.
Those were the days! Traveling with babies and kids. I'm amazed that now carseats can be dismantled for more thorough cleaning. I should clean my own car now too! I have an earthquake kit , designed by the emerg. prep company, in my car. How sweet that your Dad did one for you!
Great job. Always carry jumper cables or a battery jumping charger. You gotta be able to get your battery going esp in Canada. Though yesterday I helped a stranded lady with that 12volt battery jump thingy.. ok so I dont know the name but hubby bought it. And face it... us gals should know how to do the simple stuff.
I always keep wet wipes in my car. No babies, but I use them all the time: after I get back in the car from the store, pumping gas, when I pick up the kids from school (for their hands). They're a lifesaver.
Hi Steph! I like to keep 1) a small cosmetic bag with bandaids. 2)I also keep some plastic silverware and straws in a baggy for when drive through forgets or if I pick up a yogurt on the go. 3) I keep a small pair of scissors ✂️ which helps in unexpected ways sometimes 4) wipes (this is a must!!!) 5) extra sunglasses 😎 and masks
Love, 💘 love the video! Yes, it great to have some type movies in the car. I am learning that the hard way lol.. great idea's that I will be investing in as well. I like your van. My husband works for Honda. He makes the transmissions for alot of Honda cars.🌝
It's so motivating to see you cleaning!!! Thank you. Also, if you don't mind my suggesting this:. keep four emergency blankets in your car. You may need to lay a couple on the ground in an emergency. I think most can withstand the snow or water and dirt. There is also a beacon that no matter what, no matter where you are, lost in the wilderness, etc., will 100 percent alert help and show you where you are. It is NOT like phone GPS, it's on a separate system, and it WORKS!! 😀😀😄 Also, a couple of flares are a good idea in case your car breaks down at night. Thanks, Steph, you are SO APPRECIATED!! God Bless You.
Loved this. I've been watching a lot of the Detail Geek lately, so this was pretty satisfying. I like knowing what you keep stashed in the car for the kids and for emergencies. It was a nice little reminder to stock up my car!
Never had anyone detail my vehicle that well. You did a great job, puts me to shame I was trying to figure out when the last time I cleaned my car was and shamefully its been over 2 years ago ahh!
I love a clean car! I take mine to one of those wash-it-yourself places and do the outside and inside. Good idea about the safety kit. I have some of the stuff, but you mentioned a few items that I will add.
You and your commenters have excellent ideas. The messy van years I remember oh so well I was chuckling throughout your video! The only other thing I’d add to the car that I haven’t seen mentioned is a Swiss Army knife with the 6 or 7 or more tools and utensils to use in a pinch. I also keep a smallish microfiber towel in there for emergency spills or to wipe my car down if I go the automatic car wash
Right now i keep hand sanitizer in a glass bottle ( Florida sun would melt plastic ) , extra masks, a first aid kit , extra sunglasses and umbrellas. Great job ! 👏
Looks fantastic! You were so smart to do a deep clean after a road trip when that's the last thing anyone wants to do! When my kids were younger we rented a huge van for a day trip to San Francisco with their friends. It had to be cleaned out before returning and my son got out the leaf blower, opened all the doors and blew the heck out of it before vacuuming! Jordan Page, the mom of eight children, keeps a hand held vacuum with a cigarette lighter plug in charger to hand to kids while they are stuck waiting n lines for the kids to vacuum their area. They love it! Full confession, sometimes I watch the Car Geek Guy on youtube detail out cars in unimaginable condition. One time it took him over two days to due a mom's van. With the car clean out on the weekly rotation it helps so much to keep it tidy. Oh, when my grandkids were little, I used to keep one of those pop up mini tents from the toy section that lay flat and a child's potty for emergencies when there wasn't a bathroom around, especially when they were potty training and bathrooms were still intimidating for them, some paper towels and kitchen garbage bags. Popped that thing up in the back of the wagon or by the side of the sedan and we avoided so many accidents.
When the kids were little I used to say a hamster could live on the crumbs in the van for a month-- so gross! Finally got rid of my van (it was 17 years old!) and am loving the new car smell-- and no crumbs and mystery stains!
Hi from New Zealand. Oh my....I have never cleaned my car out that thoroughly. Today is friday and I'm car inspired 🤣 Thanks for the inspiration- Heather.

What a workout! Great job. Our car after holidays is yuck! Sand is not easy to vacuum out of the carpets! We also have an emergency sick kit - old towels, spare plastic bags and paper towels. Nobody is ever sick if the kit is the the car - like Murphy's law!
Mom life ! 💗 That was a big job, you did great ! I live in Arizona so I keep bottles of water, a tire pump with gauge that runs off the running engine, disinfecting wipes, a bottle of hand sanitizer, napkins, phone charger, and masks, tfs 💗
I've tried to keep wipes and hand sanitizer in the car. Wipes were always getting dried out, so I keep a backpack with the essentials and bring in the house. (I don't have babies, so easier for me to do.) Sanitizer I now keep the lid closed, but not snapped so it doesn't explode. 😳
We live where there is alot of snow. Keep a metal coffee can with a top. It needs yo have a little bit of sand. Put a small candle and matches. If you are stranded you can light the candle to help the car stay a little warm
Wow! Your car looked great afterwards. I always have a large umbrella in the car, and an extra coat each in case we need roadside assistance in Winter xx
I’d consider adding jumper cables, flares, a sign to put in a window, a small amount of cash/change, emergency contact info, list of any necessary medications, foldable shovel, and in the winter: really cheap chunky kitty litter for traction on ice.
These days, along with an emergency kit, I also keep a little C-19 kit. Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves and extra face masks in individual zip lock baggies.
Thank you Steph! I never thought about using Q-tips. My car is so dusty because it’s sitting in our driveway. We are downhill from a horse neighborhood. Oh, thanks for your video on your make up. I didn’t think there was a reason for me to put on make up now, but I like what you said about looking more “finished.” I mean, why should I save my BB cream? Thank you so much
Oh my I hate to say it but right now mine looks even worse, and I don’t have kids. Thanks for the motivation and I will get mine clean first thing in AM
I have always had napkins in the glove compartment. I just throw in the extras after getting food on the go. Over the pandemic, we weren’t eating anything from restaurants, so we used them up with snacks from home, someone needing to use one as a tissue, etc. Now I’ve had a few instances when I needed a napkin and didn’t have one, and I’m newly aware of how unconscious my napkin collecting habit is! I just always assume there are napkins in there! Haha!
Let's see... In the back we keep 4 blankets (one per child), a potty and a roll of TP, a 3 compartment bag for outtings (which has a lunch cooler bag, a picnic blanket, 6 plastic forks, extra plastic bags for trash, a roll of paper towels), reusable grocery bags, umbrella, small stroller, jumper cables, first aid kit, emergency ponchos. I also keep a small child's backpack with extra diapers or pullups and an extra set of clothes for my 2 youngest. In the front we keep a stash of napkins, baby wipes, DVDs and CDs. In the glove box I keep a giant plastic Starbucks cup for little bits of trash and just empty that when cleaning. In the middle I have a crate for 4 notebooks and 4 pencils pouches and a few children's books. Man that's a lot of stuff! 😅
Hey Steph, great job getting your car cleaned back up after a memory making trip, so much FUN!! How long didi it take you to clean your car that thoroughly?
I just paid my newly 13yo $2 to clean out the van. 😂 Best bang for my buck. Even if it wasn't as detailed as I would love, it's so much better! I have a small zippered pouch with hair tie, pins, very small amount of ibuprofen etc, pad, etc. I have a Ziploc with plastic spoons. We have cloth handkerchiefs, leftover paper napkins and any random extra sauce packets.
Great video and great results! I know we're all using sanitizer a lot more these days, but I took my bottle out of the car after I saw a video of one catching fire from the summer heat that built up in the car through the windows.
We can’t leave anything in our car in Texas. Our heat index is 109 outside of the car so anything inside would melt immediately. Snacks, headphones, candles, crayons would all be melted goo. Even hand sanitizer is dangerous in the car.
Great video, but I don't keep hand sanitiser in the car as I read they can explode and set on fire in the heat, so be cautious. I keep mine in my bag xxx
Steph, do you need to rinse after washing stuff with your "mild soapy water"? Or is it dilute enough that it's not needed? Thanks for this video - I need to clean out my car!!
Road trip emergency stuff is best. I have a bag with tooth paste toothbrushes, cash $$ deodorants and some other toiletries. You never know when the car is going to break down so its best to be prepared with extra clothes like undies and shirts. Allways carry jackets for the family for emergencies. Nothing bulky. Few cans of Vienna sausages and crackers, tools, flashlights, an old charged cellphone for 911 calls only. allways carry a gallon or two of drinking water. Also engine oil, transmission oil, power steering oil, coolant, brake fluid.
I also include my car in my cleaning routine (on Saturdays), but I recently did a big deep clean and it felt so good!!! Amazing how quickly it gets trashed 🤣
I can't stand it if my car gets dirty! I actually keep car cleaning products in the boot of the car. I always have boiled sweets in the car, as I have diabetes, tissues, a pen and CD 's. I also have shopping bags, which I usually forget to take into the store! And currently, I also have a box of face masks.
I am so ashamed of my car . I have not cleaned it in 6 weeks other than to take some rubbish out occasionally. It is full of sand . Tomorrow I will at least get every bit of rubbish out and wipe things over a little,. I have no excuse as I do my weekly homeblessing hour and my zone on Friday as I have help for a few hours with the house and garden on that day .My husband is very disabled so having that help on Fridays frees me to just do my morning and evening routines the rest of the week. I work along with my helperth and the current zone gets a more detailed clean but every room gets at least a dust and thorough mopping as we live in Cyprus which is part of the middle east and is very dusty . She also sweeps and mops my 2 patios and 2 small balconies as they are ceramic tiled and there is a lot of stamped concrete to sweep and 3 outside sitting areas to clean. I would never do all my zone work in one day if I didn't have my helper and the garden and patios would probably have to get done on the weekends.
Hi. Am I the only mom who has filth on the ceiling of my car? Foot prints, drawings, sprayed soda, milk, thorns, mud, burs and a lot more. I have no clue how it gets up there!! Where I live we have to keep a fire extinguisher, reflecting jacket, red reflective triangles, jack and spare tyre. I personally like keep tow rope 5t strong, battery chargers, first aid kit, rules and regulations regarding road rules stuff, wet wipes, fuses, tissues, 30m rope, phone chargers, water and cleaner, with a cloth and lastly a couple packets for rubbish
I try to keep my car stocked with the absolute essentials at all times! What are your car must-haves that save you in any situation??
We have first aid kit in ours. I don't think you mentioned a basic kit. Also bug spray, and paper towels.

Battery jumper cables, spare tire & jack. If you can afford it, change out the donut tire, cars come with and get an actual spare tire.
In my country it's mendatory to have a first aid and emergency kit in your car.

Nice job!! Your girls are getting SO big! Such wonderful helpers! Soon you can pass this job to the two of them for a couple bucks! 😊
I call everytime we make a pit stop a "trash ortunity" time!:)
Hi Steph. What a great video!
How often do you do the detailed cleaning?
Thank you! I do it as needed and then a quick clean once a week on fridays
Steph, do you need to rinse after washing stuff with your "mild soapy water"? Or is it dilute enough that it's not needed? Thanks for this video - I need to clean out my car!!
It is dilute enough, yep
i have gloves, hand santizer and a bat (sad I know, but for safety reasons) I'm going to do an emergency kit. Thank you for the inspiration.
Awesome! I do mine on Fridays, but this was necessary!
My car only has a first aid kit in currently so I need to stock up but I always always have a potty. With 4 year old twins, you never know
Good job👏👏👍😘
Yay! I need to clean my van! It’s scary lol
This was long overdue! Under the car seats was frightening!
Road trips definitely make for messy vehicles!
I live in FL USA. No need for anything warming. 🤣 I always keep a $20, masks, tampons, pads, and tissues.
In my safety kit I’ve got a snake bite bandage🇦🇺
My mother gave me grizzly bear spray once. When I said it was unlikely I'd ever encounter a grizzly bear, she explained, "It's for PEOPLE!"
Anytime you needed a job - show this to a car dealership and you'll be a car detailing job : - )
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
👏👍👍👍☺️
Probably don’t need bear spray but could use hurricane spray 😜😂
Haha!
Past. Don't put your masks in a sealed plastic bag. Chance of mildew is too high. Open the bag or use paper. 😘
Thank you! We are all learning about masks 😷 😊😊💜
Unused masks shouldn’t get moldy, should they?
