The sound design is on point. The creaking floors, the sound of thick doors opening. Incredible atmosphere that most modern horror games nowadays fall short of replicating.
tbh, horror games nowadays tend to lean more on jumpscare/gore mechanics a lot. Instead of relying on creating a tense atmosphere. The same goes for japanese vs american horror movies. You simply cannot compare J-horror to American horror movies. Saw versus Ju-on The grudge anyone (the Japanese original that is, without michelle gellar). Also there's a huge difference between being freaked out or being grossed out.
@@ginkarasu ^^^ there a diffrence between a movie or game leaving you with a disturbing feeling and thinking of it for a couple days, then one being a generic horror that you will forget the next day.
100% I'm playing Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and every fight has annoying screaming in the background. These fights are more subtle. Whispers, heart beating, and other little touches in there in combat.

It helps that horror is almost mainstream for them so plenty of backing to make horror. Also from a cultural stand point they view supernatural horror as the more common type and much like H.P. Lovecraft you cant really beat the evil thing. At best you escape, or seal up the horror for someone down the road to deal with. The ring is a text book perfect example. In the first movie in the states the heroine tackles the ghost in typical western fashion by trying to appease/exorcise/release it. However in the end she simply resigns herself to escape like eastern horror. Also its really unlikely for a Japanese game to be censored for being too scary while that has happened in many countries.
The game was inspired by the real legends of Japan, they have tons of "yurei" ghosts out there
I hate how helpless you feel in almost every J-horror game as a Westerner, though. Resident Evil is the big exception where you are always an American (still trying to wrap my head around this one) with guns and knives, though.
They actually did sacrifice human beings in early Japanese history by burying them alive in structures (hitobashira) like the Shrine Carpenters from Fatal Frame 3.

I remember, circa 2003, my family buying Fatal Frame 1 and 2 together. Me, my older sister, and my mom watching my stepdad play through them every night with the lights out. Such a creepy franchise and such good memories with my family. Thank you for uploading SHN! ❤️

Back in 2004, I got this game as a birthday present from a friend.
Played it with my wife for an entire week.
Yelling and screaming constantly to the point that my wife no longer wants to sleep alone.

1. Mio just leave her sister.
2. Mio killed mayu
3. Mio and Mayu alive ( but u have to get all perfect shot from start until the end in hardest mode )
Damn this game still looks pretty good for being 20 years old. Well produced, well directed, and the artstyle / presentation all on point for sure. What a gem; I'd love to see this series remastered or rebooted. There's some great game design concepts here amd the series is genuinely unique and creepy. Glad I at least had a chance to play Fatal Frame 1 and 2 way back when 🤔🙏🤗
The best part of this is when the Kiriyu twins say “why do you kill?” And SHN just opens the door and leaves.
My husband and I played this back when we were still dating! He had surround sound in his bedroom and we played it with the lights off! So scary with the incredible sound design. We had a blast.

Wow, I remember playing this as a kid... My cousin and I procured a copy from blockbuster. Because of all the hype around this, we couldn't get past the first ten minutes. We also had blankets covering our eyes

You mentioned Blockbuster. I never played this game, but when we'd rent from Blockbuster, I specifically recall seeing the cover of this game. I was terrified of the movie The Ring, and when I saw this I about shit my pants in the isle.
I happened to look up the cover and now I'm here, watching footage of a game that my younger self, wouldn't have made more than 5 minutes playing.

I'm amazed that after completing this several times, I never realised that you could run past most ghost.
At first I was wait what? Then I noticed you almost never took any pictures of optional ghosts when the meter showed blue. You just rushed past it. And that you mostly seemed clueless where the ghost were. Even though the meter turned orange you still searched the other way.

This was so fun to watch but watching you use Type 14 film on the most aggressive spirits and take forever to kill them when you had plenty of red and green drove me absolutely insane!

The camera had more upgrades (changing lenses) that you werent aware of..you could of added more , u just needed to click it to the right lol made the battles more easily...u only had slow...blast was actually good..and those twins...it wasnt ur camera..one of them was fake.
Overall i enjoyed this..brought lots of memories back. That kimono room was my scariest place!

Agreed! I know if you go back to the first house, there is a ghost battle between 3 kids you can do and they drop an important camera item for you. It made me sad when he skipped the ghost battles too
I was hoping that this would be a complete Lorerun like SHN did with Fatal Frame 1. I noticed a few things I did not when I watched Markiplier play the game. The young woman hiding in the trunk in the Osaka House must have been pregnant when the Repentence happened, because during her battle at 3:05:00 we can hear the sound of a crying baby. There are layers of details in this game that you would not notice the first time you experience it. Usually SHN is so thorough on playthroughs I was surprised when so much was getting skipped. I wanted to get the complete story on the Kusabi, but it will not show up in this playthrough.
Wow this brought back many memories with my family. I can’t believe I found the game! This game, gta San Andre’s, resident evil 2 and 4, final fantasy and many more games, all good memories of me watching my sister play these on the ps2.

Fix camera is more suitable on survival horror like alone in the dark and Resident Evil. It's much scarier than over the shoulder view.

first thank you for the great work here and keep it coming, here is a fun story, back in the day, by accident i bought this twice on the same day, first game title was Project Zero 2 and the 2nd game title was Fatal Frame 2, i bought the first game aswell on the same day in a Game store, which since has left denmark, the first game was named Project Zero, all games worked fine with my PS2

omg, dis fatal frame, i remember being a 3/4th grade and ps2 is still expensive console and not everyone had it back then, we play it on ps2 rent place and bought a walkthrough book, ofc im too young to understand it so i paid for the rent and had our older friend played it.. and every ghost encountered we screamed like a sissy and trying to solved the puzzle with so much hyped, ah times, flied so fast..

SHN, thanks for uploading this video. FF series are truly classic horror games, played at night during my PS2 days and really gives me the chill. No offense for RE fans coz I am too, but RE7 besides having good graphics, just can't OUTLAST Fatal Frame.
Totally agree with your points buddy. It's a definite for RE7 will be much better than Outlast, but Fatal Frame eventhough a old classic game i believe still bypass both the titles RE7 & Outlast. Probably I am too stuck with old school RE. I hope there is a remake for Fatal Frame series. Just an opinion anyway, my comparison might be wrong. Take care buddy. Thumbs Up.

I still have this game and the first for ps2 after rebuying them still great looking sold my ps4 not many good artistic games anymore but I def want a ps2 again to play these fatal frames I'd love them to bring these games to the switch I play resident evil 0 on my switch lite it's like playing the GameCube one again they should bring all these or alot of these games for the go :) I miss games with artsy graphics atmosphere ambient sounds horror some games are bringing that back which is nice tho but I still love ps2 games :) fatal frame one and two still look amazing so does silent hill 3 and clock tower 3 your awesome for playing this game!!!!!!!

ya was thinking that he receives way too much damage on core shot, using a stronger film a few times with the max power on the triangle would have killed instantly a lot of the ghosts
Omg it's so frustrating to see him missing good shots and taking damage that could be avoided. But it's a great gameplay though.
I remember playing this and being so freaked out the whole time. The ending made me cry in both sadness and frustration. To Mayu I was like: " I spent the whole game trying to save your ass and then it all ends with me killing you anyways?! WTF?!!"
