I absolutely loved this interview with these two articulate, nice gentlemen. They don't make them like this anymore. Talent plus work is what makes the world go round, I wish more kids would listen to these guys instead of playing video games all day.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are brilliant! I'm a music producer and recording engineer. Not only do I admire these guys, I actually bought some of their equipment, when they dissolved Flyte Time studio! (I think it's cool that some some 'country hick' horseback rider in Virginia owns the Simmons Drums used on a Janet Jackson album!) It's coo. They showed up on the soundtrack for a movie I did for Showtime! Love these guys!
_"Be bold! Be fearless!"_ This video is the first time I've heard these words in context with making music. I've always been a fan of Jimmy & Terry but never could articulate why. Their words, confidence, and positive energy has solidified why they have been so successful.
Go back to Janet Jackson control video see how jellybean jermone Popeye jam n Lewis was acting like the time minus Morris day n Monte moir Jesse Johnson
Great to hear Jam and Lewis praise O’neal , as in the 80s they were a dynamite team together. Hearsay might have been their best production work ever, yet all most people talk about with them is the Janet Jackson albums.
mitch3996 II all their work should be talked about but the reason people talk about those Janet because they are some of the biggest selling albums in history with hit after hit after hit on them. Rhythm Nation itself had 7 Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 hits. The most of any album.
Both of these men are legends and so humble considering what they have accomplished in their career. They are so articulate and fun to listen to their stories. The SOS Band songs are some of my favorite. The sound they created was pure genius. Great interview with these two amazing producers and musicians.
These gentlemen are the epitome of true music makers! Blessed and gifted and if you're a true fan of any music they've made and still make you'll see why they're still so revolant today.
It's a miracle for me, every musician from Minneapolis still looks so young, whether it's Morris Day, Jimmy and Terry or Prince or... Is it a special food or the cold weather in Mnpls or it is just producing great music...?
I really can't thank you Red Bull enough for this in depth interview. I was inspired by Quincy Jones and Prince respectively. But it was Jam and Lewis that sparked me into production and at a very influential age. I credit them as what production is. It has and is still opening doors even to this day. Because even though its not as reflected on radio as much. There is still a great need for really good and moving songs. I learned to record outside the box and to play my instrument and to learn the inside of the box as well. At the end of the day it's about the song and respecting the listener. These guys are the truth and hopefully one day I can simply shake their hands. They are the reason I run my studio, appreciate my clients, love my work and see the artist take it and run.
I KNEW SOME OF WHAT THEY TALKING ABOUT,BUT WHAT MADE THIS VIDEO SO GREAT WAS LEARNING THE THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT.THESE GUYS WON'T LIVE FOREVER AND I'M GLAD WE GET TO SEE THEM LIKE THIS WHILE THEY ARE BOTH STILL ALIVE AND WELL.GOD BLESS THEM BOTH WITH WITH MANY MANY MORE DAYS ALIVE AND WELL.
This was really, really good! They're definitely legends. And congratulations to Jimmy & Terry on their recent induction into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame!
Fantastic. They have made and continue to make such a mark in music. Terry still doesn't say as much as Jimmy, but you can see this is a real brotherhood. Thanks for posting!
Truth! It is completely out of this world crazy how talented those Jackson kids are. Seriously for one family to have both a Michael Jackson and a Janet Jackson. Not to even mention The Jackson 5. It’s crazy. Most if not 99% of musical families don’t have one Janet or Michael

If your thinking in the music world, and in the whole entire big picture, there is nobody better in this industry than Jimmy jam, and Terry Lewis period!
these man produced the music of my life. i say, they're GOAT. nobody made sound music better. they made and produced legends. greatest inspiration in modern r&b, funk and soul, black music. with their flytetime-style sound they entered the charts worldwide. i would say forget the rest, but this is disrespectful, therefore respect jam & lewis, the kings of club music.
and her sound was that of the Minneapolis sound. For instance, "What Have You Done For Me Lately" was an updated, later version of "Controversy" her sound was not original back then. And big props to Jam & Terry. These gentlemen are geniuses in their own right. But Janet's earlier sound was that of the Minneapolis sound.
The Greatest of All Time for this genre. 2 Legends. Just listen to: Alexander O Neal or SOS Band's Slow Jams ( among many other artists ) - Just Killer Production & Songwriting Duo. My All Time Favorites.
Legends.....REAL legends. To many times I look under these artist youtube vids and see people bestowing the title of legend on someone who hasn't even made a dent in the industry yet. These guys have done and are STILL doing it.
Legends of the game, iconic! Janet, Jimmy, and Terry they're songs were my youth and accounted for my God times and Rhythm Nation helped me through my sisters death, Escapade taught me how to learn to live and enjoy life again!
Legends are an understatement 💯 straight geniuses. I would have loved to hear them talk a little bit more about New Edition and the sound they created for them as well. That NE sound and harmony was so dynamic. Love these guys !
Finally i found some in depth footage of these legends.. almost all my favorite songs are produced by them.. They are genius.. thanks Jimmy & Terry and Red Bull music academy for this great Lecture.
In my early life, I had the pleasure to record in their Flyte Tyme Studio in Bloomington. Also recorded at Loring Park Studio where early Prince recordings were done. Minneapolis had such a creative and diverse music scene. I count it as a great blessing.
In my opinion these guys are the best producers around. Teddy Riley L.A. and Babyface are great as well, but whatever genre of music you want they can deliver. Their range is off the charts.
Man this talk was the most insightful ever. I was glued and had to hear it ALL. These two are the coolest and most humble superstars I have ever seen. Truly inspirational. No words...

Being the big Prince fan I was back in the day I still absolutely loved these guys. They went were Prince didn't go and did what Prince didn't do. Listen to their sound, even nowadays. They always sounded so unique and they still do. Certainly Prince did too but man, Jam & Lewis gave me more vibes.
Prince from a certain point after 80's mostly in 90's was not so in making more hits or albums to sell commercial than his rights but i think he went there as well in all muisc genres...innovation was the key to everything..check 2002 live alladin with funk on everlasting now....he was evolving till his last shows with piano alone in atlanta ... death from pain killers took him...sad . He made mistakes being hard could make things different and by less complex ways and rest but he did not work that way... sad again but he pionered...Jim and Terry show respect ...In the end Prince loved what he didi and set them free. Beautiful story
I knew that there was a reason why Chicago was 1 of my top 3 bands of all time. This is coming from a 50 year old African-American Woman Who was brought up in the hearts of Baltimore city.

these two are just iconic that word sums up Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The career that they have had speaks for itself. i have followed their career and sang along to EVER HIT that they mentioned on here. Great interview . this interview was definitely needed for the culture THANK U
Yall some Bad Boys thank God Prince fired yall, so that you could step into your own Greatness. Yall work so well together like peanut butter & jelly , greens & cornbread your talents are responsible for some Epic& wonderful music that will never be forgotten. KEEP DOING YALL THANG!!!
@@bgillen3 agreed. Gamble & Huff, Rod, Wonder: platinum standard production & songwriting. I also agree with Ordo H above on Mtume, Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, Kashif, Leon Sylvers. On a personal tip I'd put in August "Kid Creole" Darnell and in Hip Hop DJ Premier "Primo" and Large Professor.
I remember this year I heard someone commenting on the song “Saturday Love” and they mentioned never knowing all this time ( the song came out in 1985)the first and second verse were the same. This is what is amazing about a singer and as Jimmy Jam says “their approach” Alexander O’Neal for me has a voice that is just great. Drugs over the years have challenged some of that vocal ability, but the man could just sing! These two men have created so many hits and their production style is amazing! Whatever they touch turns to Gold, Platinum, and beyond!!!
Man I'm serious. This would be a phenomenal movie with all the background info about Prince, Morris, Jam and Lewis, Jessie Johnson and all the rest! The band battles, countless Jam sessions, paying dues, Minneapolis sound and culture. GUYS PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis Jam & Lewis Flyte time Productions🎶🎶...they have always been my biggest inspirational producers. They made me pay attention to how music production was really composed & arranged. I loved the way their style and collaboration with their artist turned out. Their 80's sound was so on point and consistent from different solo artist to producing different bands acts, but I listen to their beats and cord progressions of how it stood out. For instance ' Cherelle & Alexander O'Neal "Saturday Love" the beat & the double claps during the intro their brand of sound. Janet Jackson "Control" it was the bass lines and the stops with the drum programming beats with the hand claps their sound signature. New Edition " If it isn't love" followed up production after Janet Jackson production work after her Rhythm Nation album. "If it isn't love" had the same drum programming beats with the stops, along with the tangerines & percussions was their signature sound back in the 80's. then they followed up with Johnny Gill album "Rub you the right way" was their raw funky bass lines & drum beat with that tangerines, once again that was their music sound signature, which once again stood out as a hit song. they were my inspiration to doing music my way, inwhich made me feel good.
I still have so many of these CDs of the music discussed. SOS Band, Cherelle, Jessie Johnson Review, The Time and of course Prince. I was 14 in 1985 but all of this music was everything to me. I have always said I was black in another lifetime because the music moved me to my soul! Tender love has always been a favorite of mine and surprisingly I never knew jimmy and terry were involved in it.
Thanks so much Joanne i really appreciate , if you dont mind let me get to know a true fan better . You can write your phone number to me in my mail so i can text you and get to know you better, terrylewis0220@gmail.com
I mean... Their formula for music was so remarkably timeless. Those inventive and pulsing baselines that could literally carry the track, only further ameliorated with the lush cords, and the mesmerising vocals. The great gift with this duo is that their tracks could exist solely as instrumentals, and **still** have that lasting irresistibility; that hypnotising resonance; that inimitable addictiveness. Teddy Riley was inventive, and unquestionably brilliant, but his work seemed to lack that polish, and the maturity, and that duality. LaFace was a force, but I think the production all-too-often was a scintillating compensation technique for lyrical depth; poetry. This team really embodied the bothness. That phenomenal duality. My favourites!
tenolamacintosh Right on! I actually have a collection of their instrumentals I listen to... it all builds up, breaks down and ends so flawlessly. No matter the tempo, it just gives off an inspirational vibe to me.
Jimmy "jam" Harris and Terry Lewis, my favorite producers of all time, as well as Prince. I've been a fan ever since their early production work w/ the female band Klymaxx, as well as Change w/Luther Vandross. Two of the best to ever do it.
I’m a rock musician, so pop and dance music wasn’t my thing. But I used to listen to Janet Jackson’s rhythm nation album all the time and loved it. The production on that album was so amazing and it was what drew me to it. I mean, it wasn’t Janet’s voice lol. It was the production and songwriting that made that album so amazing. These guys really know what they are doing.
Jeff M Janet actually has a great voice. It is not easy to sing songs like If, That’s The way love goes, Control, Love Will never Do. And on the album you are talking about it’s not easy to sing Lonely, Miss You Much, Alright, Black Cat, Living in a world they didn’t make, Someday is Tonight. Like it’s honestly hoot EVERYTHING IS ABOUT THAT ALBUM. Every singer isn’t a powerhouse singer like Houston but if every voice sounded the same music wouldn’t be as diverse as it is. Like JJ and Terry Lewis said in this video Janet is a great singer same as Diana Ross
This is a real treat!!!!! Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis went from being Prince's back up band for Vanity, and artist up under Prince's wing, to creating a more sensual, soulful sound for Minneapolis. Not to mention, the blue print for the bay area/mob sound. Over Teddy Riley, and Babyface, Jimmy and Terry were my favorite producers............ Right up under Roger Troutman, and of course, Prince, in my most humble opinion
@@HotMessMemories1 You don't listen to E-40, C-bo, or Mac Dre? If not, then that's what they call their beats, Monstrous Overriding Bass, or MOB STYLE MUSIC, or simply put, MOB SHIT. It's a bay area sound that was VERY much influenced by people like Jimmy Jam n Terry Lewis, One Way, or Zapp even. In other words, the music that I call "Jheri curl era", or early to mid eighties funk music with a deep bass line added to it, making it what they call it in the Bay MOB SHIT.

Robertine Daccord “You Are In My System” came out in 1982 and sounded like nothing else that was out at the time. Robert Palmer released a cover version in 1983. The System were really influential back then, as mentioned by Jimmy and Terry. Jam and Lewis' music sounds nothing like Italo Disco. What's the point of all musicians sounding the same? Why would they copy Quincy instead of creating their own sound? Also Quincy himself was very into synthesizers and new technology, Thriller is 80℅ synths and drum machines.

They don't make them like this anymore. Talent plus work is what makes the world go round, I wish more kids would listen to these guys instead of playing video games all day.
They reference Alexander O'Neal. One of the best. Listen to the Hearsay album.
And his Christmas album is stellar.
Hearsay my favorite album
Alexander O'Neal is dope he played drums for Morris Day and the Time (he was their first drummer) anywho These guys are legends
That's was his Thriller BEST!
Morris day n Alexander O'Neal was n the same group
My all time favorite production duo ever, since a kid before I knew what production was! These are the type of RBMA lectures I'm eager to see!
true legends
Would love to hear some of these tunes given the Gant-Man treatment!
DJ Gant-Man yes.
What all stuff did you buy from them?
Christopher Holloway me too im a musician entrepreneur
Christopher Holloway I'm a musician entrepreneur as a composer arranger and producer soon to be performer
That’s awesome
Kool man
Still prince influenced though.
@Josh Beck not. No Prince influence in any of the New EDITION songs.
The most of any album.
this was like the 10 best movies of all time combined into a 2 hour interview with these legends.
So true 💗
THIS GUY DID A VERY GOOD INTERVIEW* No Dumb Questions * Stayed Focused * Respectful*. Focused on The Artist Totally!!!
I was thinking the same thing. Right from the start he was professional, attentive and respectful 🤗
They are the masters of producing music for anyone.
Their the uncles you wish you had growing up.
Uh-huh
It's a miracle for me, every musician from Minneapolis still looks so young, whether it's Morris Day, Jimmy and Terry or Prince or... Is it a special food or the cold weather in Mnpls or it is just producing great music...?
I honestly think it’s a Northern/Midwest thing. A lot of the men in their generation still look really good here. You’d be surprised.
I. Vv CC
They are in my top five producers of all time.
Do they take up 2 spaces in the top 5 or just 1?
Jimmy jam terry Lewis ,La and babyface and teddy riley dominated the 80s 90s and early 00s
Hey I'm upcoming musician composer producer entrepreneur
I could listen to jimmy jam and terry lewis talk all day long omg
This was really, really good! They're definitely legends. And congratulations to Jimmy & Terry on their recent induction into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame!
Fantastic. They have made and continue to make such a mark in music. Terry still doesn't say as much as Jimmy, but you can see this is a real brotherhood. Thanks for posting!
Dude who mentioned Thelma Houston's "Used To Hold Me So Tight": I love you man!! That is the JAM! (no pun intended)
mootbooxle Soooo MANY of Jimmy & Terry's joints are just...their just sweet, in-the-pocket, hot....they're THE BOMB!!
1 my all time favorite songs
I still bang that song unbelievably productive love the drums and bass!!!!
Their music has so much emotion. They truly are geniuses.
Janet Jackson still makes fantastically unbelievable albums. She is absolutely genius
agreed
Truth! It is completely out of this world crazy how talented those Jackson kids are. Seriously for one family to have both a Michael Jackson and a Janet Jackson. Not to even mention The Jackson 5. It’s crazy. Most if not 99% of musical families don’t have one Janet or Michael
JIMMY&TERRY LIVING MODERN MUSIC LEGENDS
Jimmy is a great storyteller!
These guys are legends! I love how the interviewer asked very intelligent questions that dove into their artistry and musicianship. Awesome!
yea the interviewer wasn't playing or flinching
I love his Alexander O'Neal impressions!
These guys are some of the best producers, they are living Legends!
Thanks so much Mildred i really appreciate , if you dont mind let me get to know a true fan better . You can write your phone number to me in my mail so i can text you and get to know you better, terrylewis0220@gmail.com
If your thinking in the music world, and in the whole entire big picture, there is nobody better in this industry than Jimmy jam, and Terry Lewis period!
Mann... I was just bumping No ones Gonna Love U the Way Eye Do. I luv Deez guys
these man produced the music of my life. i say, they're GOAT.
nobody made sound music better.
they made and produced legends.
greatest inspiration in modern
r&b, funk and soul, black music.
with their flytetime-style sound
they entered the charts worldwide.
i would say forget the rest, but this is disrespectful, therefore respect
jam & lewis, the kings of club music.
Love how Jimmy & Terry automatically start movin and groovin at 59:12 to their own Roland TR-808 beat.
Mom
I like the story of them spending time with Janet before recording songs.
Their work in the time and with janet Jackson ushered in a new sound in pop funk r&b and hip hop. Legends
Prophets Of Rock TV. true that but, don't forget! that if it wasn't for PRINCE THERE WOULDN'T BE JAM OR LEWIS peace &. be wild! 1love
Yes. They hit a gold mine with her.
and her sound was that of the Minneapolis sound. For instance, "What Have You Done For Me Lately" was an updated, later version of "Controversy" her sound was not original back then. And big props to Jam & Terry. These gentlemen are geniuses in their own right. But Janet's earlier sound was that of the Minneapolis sound.
Don't forget New Edition Heart Break albums, breakout album of all time
The Greatest of All Time for this genre.
Two legends coming from another group of legends doing legendary shyt👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The legends still listen to Janet Jackson music because of them
Finally i found some in depth footage of these legends.. almost all my favorite songs are produced by them.. They are genius.. thanks Jimmy & Terry and Red Bull music academy for this great Lecture.
This is A MASTER CLASS......
I can listen to Jimmy Jam and Questlove all day.
You MUST check the Jimmy Jam interview on *Questlove Supreme* on iheartradio. 3-parts and ALL classic material.
these 2 are very great producers 2 of the best ever
Jam & lewis = masterminds of the music industry.
In my early life, I had the pleasure to record in their Flyte Tyme Studio in Bloomington. Also recorded at Loring Park Studio where early Prince recordings were done. Minneapolis had such a creative and diverse music scene. I count it as a great blessing.
hell yes@Encore by Cheryl Lynn, that is my joint! Watched this twice already, so much knowledge dropped!
Sound like the intro to 1999
This is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, really long and informative, along with LA and Babyface, and Teddy Riley, these guys ruled the 90’s!!🙏🏽
They got to do a movie about this.
Agreed!
No words...
I enjoyed this and hearing Prince and The Time stories. Amazing history.

So humble and my favorite producers of all times❤️. One of My favorite songs - Optimistic by Sounds of Blackness.

@jimmy jam really? I’m just that gullible to just give out my phone number. I don’t think the REAL Terry Lewis or Jimmy Jam would be asking for my number. lol
these two are just iconic that word sums up Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The career that they have had speaks for itself. i have followed their career and sang along to EVER HIT that they mentioned on here. Great interview . this interview was definitely needed for the culture
THANK U
Yall some Bad Boys thank God Prince fired yall, so that you could step into your own Greatness. Yall work so well together like peanut butter & jelly , greens & cornbread your talents are responsible for some Epic& wonderful music that will never be forgotten. KEEP DOING YALL THANG!!!

Narada Michael Walden mtume and Lucas Nile Rodgers Bernard Edwards Huff and gamble Kashif Paul Lawrence Leon sylvers III George duke etc
Gamble and Huff
Rod Temperton
Stevie Wonder
Gotta be in the Top 5
ordonize holmes don’t forget Full Force. They produced two great classics: Lisa Lisa’s left boob and right boob.
Two Legends / Trend Setters sitting on the couch spitting knowledge! Wow!
What's with the lifeless audience? JJ and TL are dropping a bunch of really funny lines and no one is even blinking.
Reginald Dorsey Look at the audience...
Reginald Dorsey LOL!! I thought the same think. I mean, DAMN it's Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis dropping some jewels. Be excited.
It's an all white audience.
There might not be a 🎤 for them..
It's a bunch of white Canadians. They're not big on Black music. Probably just present out of politeness, and out of their depth.
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
Jam & Lewis Flyte time Productions🎶🎶...they have always been my biggest inspirational producers.
They are my biggest inspiration to be an musician
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are very well spoken. Impressive interview. These guys are awesome! And yes, they are legends!
This was amazing. Jam and Lewis are true masters of music production, from the artistic to the technical. Thanks for sharing!
I agree , but Laface was phenomenal as well and Teddy had that hip hop edge..all brilliant.
Jimmy "jam" Harris and Terry Lewis, my favorite producers of all time, as well as Prince. I've been a fan ever since their early production work w/ the female band Klymaxx, as well as Change w/Luther Vandross. Two of the best to ever do it.
These guys...these guys are something else🕶🕶🎬🔎🔎 will smith and Nelly look alikes 😵🧐
These guys are fake as hell
This was an absolute pleasure to watch. Amazing talents!
This is one of thee most interesting interviews I've ever heard.
I respect jam n Lewis for going back to get Alexander O'Neal he suppose to had the time shine
Legendary. Geniuses! My favorite producers. This is a great lecture.
JustUs WTF is a mob sound?
@@HotMessMemories1 You don't listen to E-40, C-bo, or Mac Dre? If not, then that's what they call their beats, Monstrous Overriding Bass, or MOB STYLE MUSIC, or simply put, MOB SHIT. It's a bay area sound that was VERY much influenced by people like Jimmy Jam n Terry Lewis, One Way, or Zapp even. In other words, the music that I call "Jheri curl era", or early to mid eighties funk music with a deep bass line added to it, making it what they call it in the Bay MOB SHIT.
1:59:00 Damn right they should get a standing ovation! Two freaking legends!
Brilliant...I had the pleasure of seeing The Time (Controversy and 1999 Tour)

kudos to the guy at 2:16:40 mentioning "You Used To Hold Me So Tight", I was wondering whether anyone was gonna mention that. such an amazing track! although both that and "Can't Take Losing You" by The System came out in 1984

They should remaster everything with real instruments cause now they become unearable. ThelmaH Or PattiA were so much classier under Mr. QUINCY JONES. That is someone to get a lecture from all what happend throught those years from a real musician and producer point of view
