I had heard of Olga Smirnova years before the Ukraine crisis. She was a very important dancer. For her to leave Russia, unable to return, after the invasion of Ukraine - it is an act of unusual courage.
Bravo Olga! Svetlana Zakharova, who they failed to mention is from Kyiv, will be remembered for her cowardice.
Absolutely. I love her so much but she already sold her nationality to Russia although I believe that it’s not for her position at the Bolshoi, maybe for a lavish and comfortable life?
Zakharova is a dancer not a politician. She has nothing to do with any differences between Russia and Ukraine.
It is outrageous for the media to put pressure on artists. The Bolshoi and other companies are also for ballet, and should not be accused of being political.
Same with Sergei Polunin, he literally tattooed Putin on his abs and claimed he was Russian even though he's Ukrainian by blood.
@@peace-now Zakharova was a member of the Russian Parliament several years ago. She has politicians behind her.
@@ivelinapancheva3681 All I am saying is that ballet dancers should not be forced to make political statements. Obviously, it would be fatal for anyone's careeer, if they criticised the Government. It is all very well for "keyboard warriors" to make bold statements. It is quite another issue for dancers like Svetlana.

Russians have sophisticated and very high class Ballet dance and we have Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music....! So shameful.

Propaganda. Smirnoff was going to The Netherlands before the war. She didn’t want to be suspect in Europe so she made a show of switching sides. The media sees ballet now for propaganda. Disgusting. I think Smirnoff was one of many excellent ballerinas, but was not outstanding. Stop the baloney.

She may have been planning to go to the Netherlands already, but she did not have to post what she posted. What she posted ensured she will never be allowed to go home while Putin lives, and maybe not even after. It might have been somewhat for show, but she has to know it will not be forgiven. She is not any less brave for it.
@@katherinec2759 I don’t agree with that assessment. I don’t think either of us know what would happen if said ballerina tried to go home for a visit ( unless you are from Russia). I don’t know if expressing one’s opinion in a public forum would lead to a total ban from the country. But I do know that ethnic Russian Ukrainians were not able to speak their language in public, not able to express themselves politically without severe ramifications. There are two sides to every story. I choose not to believe the Western version of the story because at my age, I have lived through too many of their lies, proxy and forever wars. I find the other sides version more credible.
I like their leotards. Proud of her! You know when the Bolshoi says "Nope." Its a big nope. I was pretty sure that Putin already controlled the Bolshoi.
He probably does, but that does not mean he controls every individual dancer. She proved that. It’s also why she had to leave immediately - russia isn’t safe for people who are openly critical of Putin’s war.
