  • I started working in Cisco Meraki just at the beginning of the year. So far it's awesome. I'm already making new friends and slowly finding my pace in daily duties. The onboarding was insanely fun, and engaging - I wish I could share the whole thing with you guys!

Nice! Maybe you can make a video about how you switched jobs? Did you actively apply and prepared for the job interviews (e.g. practiced data structures and algorithms and stuff...)?

No need for that whatsoever at Cisco Meraki. It's ZERO about what you know (I mean, you have to have baseline competence) and EVERYTHING about WHO you know at the company that can get you a job there. I singlehandedly designed and managed the largest client deployment of MX-64 and MX-65W devices from those products inception for three years. This was a network of 20,000 machines in a high availability environment (payment processing). So, I sent my resume to Meraki when I noticed a position opened up for an engineer there. Well they gave me a form rejection saying they had found someone "more qualified".....UM....WHO exactly would THAT be? No really, tell me. That person doesn't exist. I'm #1 in managing their products in deployment. And this position was not a development position. So.....who's exactly out there has more experience? See, these jobs just go to their friends, family, ex-lovers, H1Bs, etc etc.

Day in the life of a Code Monkey who thinks he is an "engineer" because he learned all those algorithms and he's not totally being taken advantage of by the management and owners who while give him/her a lot of money eventually have no respect for him or his opinion and will replace him once a cheaper alternative comes up. Meanwhile you're being infantilized, pushed around, put in an "open office" nobody but the management likes (and even if they share it with you, they will always be away), while being constantly challenged by your collegues because god forbid we stick to a single technology for more than a year, or dont feel like arguing to death over something trivial nobody cares about like tabs vs spaces or light vs dark themes, forcing you to learn things you wouldn't otherwise, also people will backstab you because everyone pretends its a meritocracy but in real life it's a popularity contest like everything else, and as an engineer unless you're really good looking, popular, smart and extroverted you have very little chance to actually make a difference or get promoted.

Sounds like you know Meraki very well. It's ZERO about what you know (I mean, you have to have baseline competence) and EVERYTHING about WHO you know at the company that can get you a job there. I singlehandedly designed and managed the largest client deployment of MX-64 and MX-65W devices from those products inception for three years. I'm #1 in managing their products in deployment. And this position was not a development position. So.....who's exactly out there has more experience? See, these jobs just go to their friends, family, ex-lovers, H1Bs, etc etc. Worked out for me in the end though. And I wouldn't want to be living in what is probably in the top 5 nuclear targets in the US with the way the world is going, HAHAH. Actually it's probably #1 target on little kimmy's nukemap.
