  • At long last, it's time to offer my launch review of the Analogue Pocket. And first things first: We need to figure out if 3.5 inches is really big enough for a handheld screen in 2022 and beyond.

TH-cam recommended me your channel and I've been enjoying your content so far. A good mix of contemporary and retro gaming :)

Very weird to know that "the algorithm" approves of me on some micro level, but I'll take it! Glad you're enjoying.

I absolutely agree with everything you said about the screen and the dock. And now with FPGA cores out for systems like NES, SNES and Genesis even they are so pleasant to play on the Pocket and the screen aspect ratio just makes a lot of sense. All we're missing is the Library and screen simulations for FPGA now

Yeah, the cores are really exciting. But honestly, I want the display modes in the cores SO badly. It'll be a bummer if we never get them (or if they're not exactly what Analogue has implemented for GB/GBC/GBA/GG). The accuracy of the Pocket's display modes are unmatched compared to any emulator filters I've encountered.

@@PestulonGaming Hard agree. As far as I've heard on Reddit threads about the cores it should only be a matter of Analogue making the display modes available via the API for cores to be able to use them, so I'm eagerly waiting for the current firmware to finish beta

Glad to get your thoughts on the Pocket! I came to this channel in the run-up to the original pre-order in 2020, and although I stuck around for the solid Switch and JRPG content, in my mind you've always been a Pocket guy, one of the few early voices on TH-cam that really understood how big of a deal it was going to be.
I just got mine back from Analogue repair after two months with a faulty R shoulder button (a surprisingly common issue if Reddit is to be believed), so I can finally get going with some of the GBA games that I missed out on back in the day. But I agree with you that GB, GBC and GG is where it really shines.
Looking forward to more retro handheld content in the future!

Thanks for the thoughts! I'm honored to be thought of as "the Pocket guy." I remember you talking about the shoulder button. Really glad that got fixed! I've enjoyed GBA games quite a lot on the Pocket. The image is smaller, of course, but it's actually really close to the GBA SP screen size. And since it borders on 16:9, it looks great docked.

Interesting video and analysis on the Pocket! It really has come a long way, and I'm just happy we can say it exists and it's in our hands to use and play with. I think a lot of people are really anticipating being able to play NES/SNES/Genesis/TG16 and more in a handheld form more than anything right now, but it seems like a good deal of people are happy with their purchases.
We will have to see what Analogue brings to us in the near future, that’s for certain! 🤔

Thanks for the thoughts. Like most everyone else who owns the Pocket, I can't wait for that eventual jail break. I kinda figured we'd have it now, but the IPS patches are getting the job done for me. I'm also playing my original cartridges quite a lot.

Yeah I'm in that demographic too.

I think Retroad 5 Plus with the GB/GBC Extension Converter is an option for Gameboy Color on TV or a 7" Handheld. Ali-Express has them. It works best with the Everdrive GB X7.

I don’t like the black borders on GBA games

Too small? The screen on this thing is enormous compared to the handhelds it replicates.
