    Almost bought a tevo bc of you, but I instead purchase the motherboard to use in my DIY 440x440 big printer build and this video helped me a lot getting it to print very good and fast prints, Thank you for the effort and take care.

    the best video about adding a Z axis on tevo tarantula. and the best way is to connect on the free port, since both parallel and series are "second best" options...

    Which option would you recomend for the stepper motor power? You give 3 options, but I don't think you indicated which would be the better option?

      Hi Glen,
      I'm using the cable that is provided with the tevo upgrade (parallel cable).

    Great step by step video! What did you use for grease and syringe? Thanks

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      I use lithium grease but you can use any bearing oil for that.
      The disadvantage of the oil is that will fall down and eventually drop on the table. But there are some oil dip trays in thingiverse you can print and add.

    Don't we need another "oldham" protection for this axis so this motor is killed too if obstacle? Will it be the same if so, or some part must be mirrored? Thx!

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Yes...if you want to add protection with the oldham, you will need to print a second one and install it with the new leadscrew.
      No need to mirror parts. it's the same thing for the second one.

    • @pumpalBo
      @pumpalBo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your answer and your videos - really inspiring!
      Can you tell if this particular mod with the second Z motor worth it ? Is there a definite improvement or only minor/placebo ? Thx!

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      In my opinion it's worth it for many reasons.
      1- it will maintain your horizontal profile bar always horizontal. The up and down moviment will be controlled and perfect.
      2- With only one leadscrew, you need to tight real good those eccentric nuts so that the horizontal bar gets fairly horizontal and it stress the wheels and might reduce the bearing and wheel life time.
      3- I always need to use an oldham coupler to prevent Z banding. When i installed the dual Z i didn't have to use oldham couplers any more. This was proof for me that the moviment is much better.

    Hi Ruiraptor
    Your tuto are practical I thank you for that.
    I am entering to mount a second engine on the Z axis,
    I have to connect both in parallel because I am also on the points to install a double extruder.
    Could say to me, the things to change (Voltage, firmware ..) so that both run parallel to the connection Z.
    I try to change the current and do the wiring. And either the engine remains on Place, be it turns with difficulty without counting this noise that does not reassure.
    Would you help me on this?

    Hi, i read somewhere that having dual z motors can introduce such issues as one of the motors skipping steps or something like that. And that it's better to use a single motor but to use a belt system to drive both z axis leadscrews. I'm a complete amateur at mechanics and electronics and don't even have a 3d printer yet but i would be interested in hearing your opinion about that.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi JeikoNYAN,
      I also have the same opinion that using a single motor with belt is a better method but that does not mean that the other options do not work.
      I’ve been using a dual Z (two motors connected to a single driver) for some time now and never had any issues. The only thing I might additionally done (but had done it before the upgrade anyway)
      was to increase the current output of the drivers. Since i'm connecting both motors with the same driver in a Y connection, i'm also sharing the current. Therefore, the current adjustment prevents the motor from skipping steps.

    i am interested in the dual z set up, my board came with a bad z axis driver and I'm still waiting for a replacement. I attempted to adjust the pot on the z driver, but no matter what position, it has 4.96v! the motor works fine connected to y driver, so i need to make it think i want dual z steppers, but really i want to connect Z motor to E1so i can use this giant paperweight.
    any suggestions? i download the firmware from tevo, but has no tab for configuration_adv.h in it.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi SubieLand,
      If your Z driver is faulty (and you are not using a dual extruder) you can use the spare driver to drive the Z axis and use the supplied parallel cable and connect it to the spare working driver to drive both motors.
      I understand the fact that you prefer to use 2 drivers (one for each motor) but one driver for both works just fine (that’s how my printer is working).
      In your firmware you just need to enable the dual Z option and you will get both Z drivers working. Don’t use the TEVO firmware…use the community firmware instead or the more recent RC8 (posted recently in the tarantula facebook group).

    I brought dual motor about 1 year ago. Before I installed the motor, whole axis were working, included filament motor. After I installed, whole axis wont move at all. Even I tried to control through computer, still nothing. So I decided to upgrade the firmware, Marlin. The display said the motor aren't connect with motherboard, actually it is.

    Hello Ruirator, Can I use the E1 port on stock firmware of will i need to flash the firmware to the version of Marlin first?

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chi Cheng,
      You can use E1 but you need to flash the firmware because that port is not assigned. Regardless of the firmware version, you need to edit the firmware to assign the E1 port unless the new firmware already has the E1 assigned.

      Hi,
      There are different opinions about that it it always raises discussion :)
      In my opinion, i prefer to have the same driver to move both motors (using the Y cable) as this way both motor will always move in sync.
      At the same time, i made sure that the output current is correctly set (you can see my other video about how to adjust the current of the stepper motors) and i have zero issues with this setup.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Greetings Jósep,
      There are some things i notice with this upgrade:
      1- The horizontal bar is always straight and leveled
      2- Both couplings share the entire Z weight (as you know the motor coupling is flexible and is stretched due to the weight )
      4- Smooth movement thanks to the perpendicular movement of the horizontal bar - Also means less stress on those 8 wheels.
      3- The combined movement reduced the Z wobble (for my first test print i wasn't using the oldham coupler and the dual Z nut mod was incomplete).
      4- If you are planning on getting a MGN12 rail for the Z axis then i recomend you have the dual Z motor to release the stress on the carriages too.
      If you have a combination of oldham coupler or dual Z nut + a bearing mod that supports the Z weight, you might get away with it just fine but will always have the unleveling of the horizontal bar and stress on the 8 wheels.

    • @josepvg
      @josepvg 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I will then definitely do this upgrade soon, and then wait for you to show us how to add the mgn12 rail to the z axis. Happy holidays Master :)

      I was wondering if the platform of the wheels in the opposite z axis to the motor (the one in the 2020 frame) was more large, that would help to the stability? I'm asking because i want to design my 3d printer using similar system.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      I don’t think it will make a difference since both leadscrews are installed near the edge of the horizontal bar.
      If you had a single leadscrew installed in the middle, for example, then yes…but not in this case.
