    The shorter, more educational format is a great idea. Just don't get rid entirely of the entertainment portion, as that is what makes the knowledge really stick with me.
    And the occasional "how *not* to" portion can help us avoiding these mistakes.

    I love how you show us the schoolboy errors (which we're all guilty of) rather than edit them out. I mean, we didn't need to see that but I'm so happy that we did.
    Looking forward to seeing this one develop.

      To me, a master is not someone who rarely makes mistakes. A master is someone who recovers from mistakes and/or uses them as inspiration to go in a different direction. Ben is not just a master, but also a teacher. To teach effectively, he must not only show us how to do things correctly, but also how to fix our mistakes. From an educational perspective, he needs to include the mistakes. From an entertainment perspective, people like to see other people mess up. Bottom line, the mistakes need to stay.

    Long-form videos do it for me...I see it as therapy.
    Ben, you are as much an entertainer as you are an educator and master craftsman.
    I watch Crimson religiously from Brazil. Couples my love of guitars and building with that of Dorset (Poole/Bournemouth/The Purbecks) where I grew up.

    I love that you're doing this as an SG. I think the inlaid top should be flush, a double bevel would distract from the carve too much. If you want to add more interest to the inlaid top, why not use some tasteful inlaid binding like on the Kauri build.

    God love ya for not editing out the ‘bonehead’ things that we all do. I was laughing with you - not at you, Ben. 😉🤣
    Coming back for your ‘entertainment’ vs ‘education’ question… I really enjoy the long form videos where you take a project quite a ways toward completion, if not actual completion. Perhaps an idea might be to film long form, but also come back and chop the video into those ‘shorter & more focused on a single task’ chapters that you could then release as shorter length videos?
    I’ll watch either way to be honest, but I do rather enjoy the longer form method. I’m always fascinated by the order of the tasks along the way, and how certain tasks seem to flow into the next. The how’s and why’s of it I guess. So again, I’ll be here to watch them all. But I hope you don’t stop doing longer format content altogether.
    As always… thanks for all that you guys are doing. 👍🏼

    You don't even need a shooting board to match the two halves. I often put thin boards in a vise and plane free-hand. If you are slightly off-square, the two boards get matching angles, and so join together at 180

    I like the idea of shorter videos - I spend a lot of time either at work or commuting, so my free time has a tendency to be "how much of the stuff I like can I cram into the two hours before I have to go to bed if I want at least 5 hours of sleep." A lot of my favourite TH-cam channels have been making their videos exponentially longer... so I end up just not watching them. I put them on "watch later" for perpetuity.

  • @VTRAddict
    @VTRAddict ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think a fully inlaid top would look better. Partly inlaid would just look like it's been glued on top IMHO. You could do a contrasting binding on the piece that's being inlaid to make it extra fancy. In fact I think you should do exactly that. Then let me win it in the raffle... 😂

    Hello Ben I think it will be better if the inlaid top is flush with the body once it is inlaid in to the body. I think that if the edge is proud of the top there is a risk that it may chip or splinter along the edge.

    Since you're going to the trouble of inlaying the top I feel like it would be counter productive to leave it proud & also carved. Proud & given an even contour of its own maybe, but not the body carve.
    I like both format options, I also think that it has to do with the on camera talent. Some folks are better presented in shorter segments (not pointing to anyone at Crimson), you do well in both settings.

    Goot some new wood ariving soon (im in England), from West Africa, its called Obeche.. its very soft, you can put holes in it by looking at it, but its got this interlocking grain that doesnt bend much. only 25mm x 12cm, x80cm, not much, but its enough to build a one-piece electric baritone ukulele. wish me luck!

  • @dweeziltumnus7218
    @dweeziltumnus7218 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think the idea of smaller videos for the benefit of being honed in on more specific educational content is a good idea, however i don't necessarily think it should take the place of longer form videos as a whole... i feel like 20 - 25 minutes is really the sweet spot when it comes to length for "longer videos" and then if there's a topic in particular that requires more of a narrowed focus then maybe that would be fitting more of a shorter span video... for example, during a full build series regular 20 - 25 minute videos show casing content much like what was shown in this video would be fitting, then when getting to a part of the build such as the correct method for gluing, clamping and smaller aspects of the build that don't require as much on camera attention could be cut down and compiled into shorter format videos for the purpose of education over entertainment... that aside, personally i love the longer format videos and getting to see the mistakes, transparency and the human side behind the company...

    Will you fine folk be making any bass stuff this year? Not a build, necessarily (which would be awesome) but templates and kits? You cater so much to guitars, but every band with a guitar player in it almost certainly has a bass player as well, and besides the odd pick up routing template you have very little for us. Templates for the classics like P, J, MM or something extra cool like Dingwall or Strandberg would be a magnificent addition to your line up. Have you ever thought about doing a Strandberg style headless build?

    I know I’m the dork who started the SG bandwagon rolling, but I’m not leaning pro inlaid top. I think it will look like a bougier version of what the Epiphone SG’s look like with the ribbon mahogany veneers on the top and back. And personally, I’ve always found the way those veneers stop at the angles of the top and back very distracting and off putting to the SG’s look.
    That being said, I’ll be very happy if I’m proven wrong, that would be more than ok with me. Personally I’d have loved to see a thicker redwood SG top like an SG Supreme, because I’m a bougie princess. Lol
