    Control Suggestion - No Toggle! 3 Volumes with Push/Pull knobs as on/off for each P90 and a Master Tone!

      @@duzmano8161 To be honest I'd prefer 6 knobs the 3 Volumes being Push/Pull for on and off and the 3 Tones being Push/Pull for No Load! But I thought people would never go for it! 😂

    Really looking forward to this build Ben.
    Might I be so bold as to say it's about time for another bass build? A headless multiscale 4 string, using inspiration from a Dingwall and a Kubicki?

    Front rout like a tele or SG200. It leaves the back beautiful with nothing but the grain and finish to admire. Though my SG200 has a trem cavity and is quite a bit thicker and almost no break angle. Is very strait like a Fender and is 40mm thick. Powered by one Seymor Duncan at the bridge. EVH wiring with one volume.

    If I were in charge of the control scheme, I would go with either:
    1: toggles for pickups, master volume, master tone, master bass cut (ie PTB circuit)
    2: individual volumes on the INLINE knobs, master tone off to the side, five way switch. Maybe a bypass toggle for ALL PICKUPS, FULL SPEED AHEAD.

  • @seanhayes2998
    @seanhayes2998 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I personally think One P90 and a single vol knob would have been fine, but I have used a freeway switch and it is pretty cool. There’s a couple of different types now. Also you will want to have an out of phase option, trust me.

  • @kathrynwhitby9799
    @kathrynwhitby9799 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ben, put the 3 volumes along the top row with the selector(s) & tone on the bottom row.
    (plan b) Maybe, bunch up the volume pots slightly, to make room for 3 standard on/off toggle switches in the extended control cavity.

  • @V.Drouin
    @V.Drouin ปีที่แล้ว

    Something you might want to try, or that I'd like to see done anyway, is to make the 24th fret like the Jet Earlwood and Caldera models. Instead of having a 24th fret, they would screw a (brass?) plate on the edge of the fingerboard through the pickup cavity that was acting as a fret. There was therefore no fretboard after the last "fret" and there was no pickup ring. That way, the neck pickup was closer to a 22 fret position but the guitar had 24 frets.
    Cheers!

  • @mattomon1045

    Ben to cut your on the fret board Usr the laser cutter to make those lines .
    Laser cutter part 2 ,for the control cavity cover plate cut the .
    use the laser cutter to cut the control cavity with the laser and use the offcut for the cover plate.

    For the wiring, I have a Mexican deluxe players strat with a standard 5 way- but it has a button to activate the bridge pickup. So, neck pickup + button = tele and neck/middle + button = all 3

  • @szabolcsmezei4088
    @szabolcsmezei4088 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    SGs are my favourite body sculpt on electrics, the original early '60s ('62-'64) shapes are beautiful and indispensable to follow for the concept to manifest. Such a shame Gibson reserves this for custom shop models (well at least a lot closer replica than their large production ones, which seem deliberately ignoring the logic of the beveling, especially the horns).

  • @Ruddigore
    @Ruddigore ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The Gibson SG looks gorgeous and I would love to own it but I'm absolutely certain your interpretation is going to be out of this world, those inlays are an inspired choice . Great to see you are going to take away the jack from the front, my only problem the the SG design in my humble opinion.

  • @TheJeffcurran
    @TheJeffcurran ปีที่แล้ว

    So Ben, Gibson already figured this out. Look at SG Supremes and Elegants. You use equal thickness top and back woods. It allows the any figuring in the top wood to show on all of the front bevels.

  • @alexcorona

    Use a 5 way rotary switch, so then you can have neck. Neck middle hum cancelling, Middle, middle bridge, Bridge.
    Or get a 6 and have an option for all pickups as well.

  • @mattf9096
    @mattf9096 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would omit the selector switch altogether and have the volume knobs be push pull (on/off). Much cleaner and easier to manipulate than mini toggles IMO. Keep the 3 volumes in a row the way you have it laid out and erase one of the bottom circles instead of the one for the selector.... Or have the 3 volumes and wire in 2 tones for the neck and middle like a strat if you're feeling feisty.
    For the inlays I think it would be cool to do something that sort of mirrors the curvature of the horns on the guitar as opposed to a straight line... but you are on a time constraint so that might be too much carving.

    You measured the depth on a 67 style large guard SG, and I believe the 61 style originals with the small guards are actually a little bit thicker bodies.

  • @StephenHughesJelen
    @StephenHughesJelen ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding control placement. You now have 3-and-2, but are still aligning with a 90* pattern. Why not shift, make them a pyramid shape on a 45*, and have all three on the row be volume? This also gives you a lot more options for the shape of the cover. The cover could just be a removeable section of your inlaid top, for instance.

  • @James-Customs
    @James-Customs ปีที่แล้ว

    my plan for doing a 3 pickup, as mentioned 3 individual volumes, 1 master tone, but two switches, switch 1 would be your normal N-N&B-B selection, and then switch 2 would be Sw1-Sw1&M-M. so switch 2 would let you just select the middle pickup only, or add the middle to how ever your switch 1 is set, so you get the strat 2 & 4, but also can have all three on, or it just removes the middle pickup completely, was thinking of doing switch 2 with a mini toggle, but since scratch build you could use two normal switches, and place them.

  • @SE3552

    I like the way this is going. The inlaid top is definitely the way to go, as are the afterthought fingerboard lines.

    Three way toggle with Jimmy page wiring adjusted to three 3 p90s. Where the centre p90 acts as the second part of the humbucker. You would need a push pull pots and some weirdo wiring. Or drop the p90s and opt for 2 P-Rails wired Jimmy page with push pull pots

    Wow!
    I couldn’t believe it, when I just started to watch this piece! The VERY guitar I would love to build too!
    I LOVE the idea of inlaying the top wood (Daniel Van Veet, Unquendor Guitars [and ex-student of yours!!] does inlaid tops on some of his guitars!)
    I hate the front mounted jack as well! I also dislike the ‘bat-wing’ pick-guard intensely, though if you are inlaying the top, do you actually need one at all??
    I have always found the stop-tail and tun-o-matic rather cumbersome looking and it also necessitates putting in a big neck angle, in relation to the thin body (I feel like it is going behind my back….!!!!)
    I always wondered, could you use a combined bridge/tailpiece, like a Tele or something like the Hipshot bridge…? This would make for a ‘straighter’ guitar, but would it alter playability or tone….(?)
    I would love to hear what you think!
    SOOOOOO looking forward to this build!
    WONDERFUL STUFF! (As ever..!) 🥰🥰🍷🍷🎸🎸

    The tenon appears to be glued onto the neck. From the perspective of the neck how is it any different than glueing straight to the guitar body, it's still 3 foreign walls of wood and the surface area is limited to the same amount of neck? Is there a reason other than joint strength for that design? Video(s) discussing the different designs of set neck pockets would be super helpful

    I've always hated the idea of switches on 3 pickup guitars. You either sacrifice combinations or you have a hard to remember control. I think 3 switches makes the most sense

      Or do what fender did with the player plus strat, normal 5 way and have a push pull pot to add the neck pickup to the middle/bridge and bridge positions.
