Actually they're awesome if you consider a few things: I add an oxygen absorber packet AND a coffee filter on top of any fluffy powder mixes so that fine powder doesn't get sucked up in the seal AND I purchased a manual suction pump (kind of like a bike-tire pumping action but it sucks instaed of blows). I freeze my grains & rice 3+ days to kill bug eggs then dehydrate in low heat oven in case the freezer added moisture. Once dry, tranfer to clean jars & pump away! The manual pump is narrow enough to tuck in a drawer AND berries & lettuce last super long if a mason jar is lined with a paper towel & all the air is sucked out!
@@donnas2375 also, using a Ziploc vacuum (loaned my pump n seal out and alas it didn't come back), every couple of weeks or so if you're concerned, go back thru your stockpile and re-vacuum. I think you need to add the water, then let the mixture sit a little while to absorb it. You have freeze-dried fruit, dehydrated milk, dehydrated butter, and dehydrated milk, so all that will take a little time to rehydrate. It might look like there is too much liquid but give it time. This is a good idea, something else that works well: i make quick breads and bake them in mason jars. You put the lids on after they come out of the oven and as they cool, they seal. I've done banana bread like that and we tried one after a year and it was perfect! Probably a good idea to have both the mix and the already baked ones on the shelf.
I love this idea, I've seen it in my canning groups as well and I'd like to try it, I just haven't gotten to it yet! I'm glad to hear you've had success with it, It seems some people do and some don't, I wonder if it has to do with each person's individual recipe and some working better than others for this application.
I took a safe processing class created by FDA & this practice is specifically mentioned as being unsafe for multiple reasons. Other than the obvious, canning jars are not made to take dry heat and will shatter everywhere, possibly starting a fire in your oven.
Hey, idea for the tags... Why not see if recipe (light-paper-type) cards can be made up that stick to the jars? Like large stickers. I heard you can bake breads in the large mouth jars. After baking it in the oven you put the lid and ring on and while it cools the lid will seal. Place on shelf till you need it.
Strange enough a pot on a single burner portable stove filled with water a small grill rack inside and a pot inside cover makes a pretty moist cake or bread you just won't get much of the browning. So if you don't have access to a oven or a grill which can make a good oven you might want to try it
Oh my gosh yes this is a great tip! This reminds me of two things...a backpacking trip with a class in high school where we were introduced to something called the ""bakepacker" that used this very concept except the bread cooked inside a plastic bag on a rack in the pot- we made cornbread. And a Girl Scout camping trip where we put muffin batter into unwaxed paper cups and into a covered pot with a shallow layer of simmering water and made steamed muffins. I am preparing to assemble complete meals into a box/bag. And, I am going to experiment with baking in our gas grill. It has 4 burners and a temperature gate on the front of the lid. I see no reason not to be able to bake or roast a meal in it should we lose power (and we have electric stove and ovens.). I also have some very nice chaffer pans. And with enough Sterno could fix some foods in them quite nicely as well. On more thing I did test out when we had 14” of snow and no power for 10 hours. I pulled an oven shelf out and balanced it onto 4 large cans on each corner. I could fit 3 cans of sterno under it….I boiled water and made macaroni in a pot with 2 cans of sterno under it. I could heat sauces, soups, fry or scramble eggs, and other things in my omelette pan over one can of Sterno. Worked perfectly. Did take a little longer to come up to temperature, but not all that much longer. Once it did it was good. Also, kept a clear glass teapot of hot water nice and hot for instant cocoa or tea. And, in the pot we boiled water to cook pasta we used a French Press to make coffee. All of that worked like a charm.
When I was a kid, my mother used to tie a small bundle of white rice in a netted piece of cloth and added it to both salt and sugar containers. Perhaps instead of that little packets of chemical retardents, trying a natural source might keep the sugar from getting hard or crusty in the jar.
I remember my mother putting a few grains of rice in the salt shakers for the same reason. They were big enough not to come through the holes with the salt.
Thank you for the recipe/video. And I don't know if you realize that when you tap the side of the measuring cup, you are tapping down your flour, which is what you are trying to avoid by spooning in the flour.
I bought a book ages ago that was fantastic. Mixes you created, put in storage with the recipe and you were done. Now I put them in used glass jars. I hate to throw away anything glass

For egg powder, is there a substitute? I am severely allergic to eggs. Your recipes look so yummy and like that they would last a long time in the pantry for an emergency. Let me know if there's a substitute. Thanks, big fan here
There are powdered egg replacers, like this one. amzn.to/3tdJSlC
I haven't tried them so I can't vouch for how they work but it would be worth a try!
They are nice to give as gift too, Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
Excellent 💯
Your powdered egg recommendation is ingenious.

You’re obviously the strong no nonsense type young woman and I HEARTILY appreciate it ..!
YAAAAY … why, it seems like you just want to share your considerable knowledge 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼
Such an interesting video and having watched, I was not disappointed. Thank you.
Could you please list the title of this book? Would love to locate such a treasure trove.
Love your videos. Just starting on making these jars. Love the ideas you have. 🍇 _ didn’t have a raspberry emoji in my selection.
I can see this with other freeze dried fruits! Thank you!! I wonder if you could make these savory with spices and freeze dried ham or bacon. I will have to try that!
I’m so glad I found you here. Love all you do! These videos are so much better than FB

I have been seeing videos lately about Storage. Stalk Pails of food and goods.
How about making a rice sachet and adding that to the jar to absorb the oxygen moisture.
This is wonderful!
Thank you!
I got all sorts of fruit but not a raspberry. Love the idea of preparation like this so i only need to add water. Thank you.
