I worked at the Pub when I attended YSU in the mid 90s. Ed O'Neil came in one night had a beer and talked to all of us working. He told us some stories signed some autographs. Great guy.
I was bummed that I graduated from YSU the next year, I don't even remember who gave the speech at mine. I come back to watch this once in a while whenever I feel a little down and unsure where life is leading me. This never fails to lift my spirits. I've shared it with many friends and co-workers, and they too appreciate Ed's message in it.
What a respectable actor he really is. I liked him since Married with Children. After it ended I saw him in an updated version of Dragnet around 20 years ago.
That's not what he said: Work hard. And if it doesn't work out go down swinging. A very important addition, because his message is: Hard work can open up chances, but it does not guarantee success. A very humble and empathic statement of a guy that doesn't suffer from survivors bias like so many other stars who think it was only the hard work that brought them there. There's always an incredible amount of luck involved as well.
He truly is a legend. It's interesting that the difference between him and Al is that inspite the difficulties in life, he didn't give up. Truly an important lesson.
From knocking people's blocks off when Kelly was getting treated badly, to knocking it out of the park with a speech like this...... once a badass always a badass!!!!!
i have watched many interviews with ed o'neill. he is the most wonderful, honest, generous, down to earth bloke in an industry where those qualities are virtually non existent. a humble gem of a man. god bless you ed.
Wow !! He's had some journey in Life and just went with the flow allowing him to get where he is today. Never give up ...keep going the Distance and become a Mentor for the younger generation. That deserves applause. 👏👍🏴
Wow I'm impressed that was a great speech. I listen to every word from beginning to end. He gave them his humble beginnings. That if u want success u have grind, work on ur craft, work hard, and be a little lucky if can get it. Great speech.
Thank you sir. I stumbled upon this video watching interviews from you on Married with Children at a time in my 40's where I was about to give up on my dream. I will go full throttle, I will never give up and I will forever remember this video of you. Thanks a million.
Ed O'neil is one of my favorite actors and a highly skilled Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners of the Gracie Family, ......Married with Children was my favorite TV show, and Dutch was one of the best movies ever........ 100% Class Act- Stand Up Guy.
Being from Ohio myself it brings feelings of great PRIDE when I see someone else from my "HOME STATE" make it in life. Or when I happen to meet someone that is from Ohio in the place I am living now (Las Vegas, Nevada) because I know what I'll get from that person (hard work, great attitude, a great and sincere friend, someone who would literally give you the shirt off their backs if they had to) because of how we are raised. You are taught that three things matter most 1) Your Family, 2) Your Friends, 3) Your job. They are all intertwined at some point and make you what you are. Congratulations Mr. O'Neill. You are truly deserving.
@@frankmiller95 Yeah, like John Havlicek, Archie Griffin, Bob Knight, John Glenn, William McKinley, Woody Hayes, Bob Hope, Clark Gable, Dean Martin, Jack Nicklaus...should I keep going?
@Alex T If you think it's WRONG to take PRIDE in people that have achieved success and made something of their lives then I can't help you. That was the original purpose of my comment above and why I made it. Here again is proof of that. Being from Ohio myself it brings feelings of great PRIDE when I see someone else from my "HOME STATE" make it in life.
Ed remember me, Mark Antonette, I played Soccer and hung around with Bill DeCola, lived on Ohio Avenue. You were a great manager and a fantastic actor. Loved Married with Children and if ever in Pittsburgh look me up
They appaud at his modern family character and sit like the lumps of coal they are when he mentions Al Bundy. Good thing I wasn't there. I would've been the guy wearing the NO MA'AM tee shirt.
"Married with Children: went off the Fox network in 1997, when these college graduates were just preschoolers. They would only know it by watching reruns.
Seriously, every guy has a story like that, started small, alot of people helped you out, steered you in the direction you took. Great, honest interpretation of life. Stay humble, work and learn every day.
This clip has been floating around on my homepage for a while. I always ignored it. Today is the first time I watched it all the way through. I’m VERY glad i did. Mr. O’Neill kept it honest, real, and straight to the point. He’s just a regular joe who worked hard and in a series of good luck and timing became a successful actor.
Another one that's great is the one where Peg becomes a cosmetics girl and makes more money than Al. Al goes to Burger Trek to make extra $$$ and winds up working for Pauly Shore.
Wow !!!,,,How Inspiring!!,,,,,Thankyou Ed for Helping Me to Get Through a Tough "Mfriggen" Patch ,,,LET'S ROCK!!!!!!!,,,,from New Zealand 🇳🇿 2021,,March,,14,,11:17am,,Sunday,,,,,,Didn't Expect that one?!?!..Never Give Up On Yourself......
I attended YSU when he ran the pub at kilkawley and Ed was the least bitter man and the farthest thing from a complete a-hole I have ever known. A great actor to play Al Bundy a show that was incredibly funny, 'oh family I have money!'
Yeah, he is really a good guy. He nailed Al Bundy for me and that's why I was hooked on that show when I tuned in in 1987. He should've won at least one Emmy for that role.
Great address! Glad he got cut by the Steelers and rolled the dice and went to NYC. Imagine life without Al Bundy or Jay Pritchett being played by Ed O’Neill.
I'm in my 60s too and yeah, it has been a ride. Left college with a degree in English Lit and ended up a member of a bike club. As Al would say, "Let's rock!!!"
The best commencement speech ever! I wish Ed was the speaker at my graduation. I cant even remember who the dickhead was who spoke at my graduation, but these lucky people will never forget that ceremony.
i'm gratefull to have seen the show here in Indonesia way back in the 90s when i was a kid..it really is a great reminder of how things were, where mostly everything was uncertain yet life was enjoyable..yes those were the days. where people are not that easy to be offended, where even a sinicall jokes was comprehended as gracefull inputs(dont know how that happended it just did), it was a real life situation where nothing is perfect yet how people reacts to it with big heartedly seem the norm..and then..came the millenials(i am one) i'm so thankfull to my dad to have had let me watch the show(my mother didnt know any english anyway). now i can see that even for just a glimps of moment..i can go back in time memorizing the not so good old society yet filled with enough amount of joyfulness thanks Oneil thanks Al Bundy thanks for the entire show production thanks dad
He was truly nervous at the beginning i think but the speech went off perfectly and the story really is keep going if thats what YOU want not others telling you to stop or you wont make it. you have to keep pushing as random things can happen anyway to help you along. Stay in the fight as if you dont then you already have lost.....
Would of been funny if Ed closed his speech with, "And in closing I'd like to say, I hate you all, and I thank no one but myself. As of today, I, Al Bundy, am finished with college. M... V... P!"
Hearing that Ed O'Neil is NOW giving his honorary degree back to the University, in response to a federally elected election denier being appointed as the new University president, brought me here. VIVA DEMOCRACY !
Honestly I thought he was going to end with “you might of graduated from college, but I scored four touch downs in a single game”. 😂
Great line yes... just what he would say.
Hell yea
Hahaha, me too! And don't forget the pose!
😂😂😂😂
Ed seems to be a regular guy, a working man's actor. Not many of those in the business.
That nails it right there - and that's what makes him so believable.
Yeah, he is like a wise man who you can listen to for great advice.
He sold women's shoes
Ed O’Neill’s life is a great example. You can succeed and still be yourself.
Made me choke up when he said, let's rock.
And he can still nail the facial expression.
I stupidly thought, what a great Al Bundy impression. Then I remembered he was Al Bundy. In that brief moment I time travelled back 30 years.
Best commencement speech ever. No bullshit, no platitudes.
Wow!! Imagine having the legendary Al, Ed O’Neil speak at your graduation! That had to have been bloody awesome!
I worked at the Pub when I attended YSU in the mid 90s. Ed O'Neil came in one night had a beer and talked to all of us working. He told us some stories signed some autographs. Great guy.
I think that’s what makes Ed O ‘ Neil so believable, because he is so humble.
He is so humble.
Ed definitely "WORKED", to get where he is now, nobody gave him anything, he did suffer, for his craft. Good speech.
Ed is a great man but AL BUNDY IS IMMORTAL
Down to earth working man that appreciates what he has.
Wow what a great speech!! Everything he said def hit home. What a great man & actor! Well deserving
I was bummed that I graduated from YSU the next year, I don't even remember who gave the speech at mine. Thank you for the laughter Ed!!!

Ed O'Neil,a great example that hard work will get you everywhere.

LETS ROCK \m/
gotta love O'Neill, he's my all time favorit sitcom actor, Al Bundy for president! :D
He truly is a legend. It's interesting that the difference between him and Al is that inspite the difficulties in life, he didn't give up. Truly an important lesson.
Ed O'Neill scored 4 diplomas in a single graduation ceremony.
From knocking people's blocks off when Kelly was getting treated badly, to knocking it out of the park with a speech like this...... once a badass always a badass!!!!!
I would have yelled "Polk high 4 touch downs one game *woo!* "
I would have stood up and started chanting: BUNDY! BUNDY! BUNDY! as he walked up to the podium.
I would've said "My life has been one long month. Helluary."
i have watched many interviews with ed o'neill. he is the most wonderful, honest, generous, down to earth bloke in an industry where those qualities are virtually non existent. a humble gem of a man. god bless you ed.

Words of wisdom from a true patriot Al "Four Touchdowns In One Game" Bundy

Yeah, like Jim Jordan.
@@frankmiller95 Yeah, like John Havlicek, Archie Griffin, Bob Knight, John Glenn, William McKinley, Woody Hayes, Bob Hope, Clark Gable, Dean Martin, Jack Nicklaus...should I keep going?
@Alex T If that is how you feel then represent your state here and talk it up. It's allowed.

Never say your from Ohio. Pittsburgh always say Pittsburgh
Ed remember me, Mark Antonette, I played Soccer and hung around with Bill DeCola, lived on Ohio Avenue. You were a great manager and a fantastic actor. Loved Married with Children and if ever in Pittsburgh look me up

I know people like you. Underneath that shirt you have a YES MA'AM shirt.
Probably because these people knew him more from Modern Family since it was more recent.
My motto, and advice to any one. " the sun will come out. You made it through another day" that's it. It reay is that simple. Love ya Ed
As Al Bundy would say: "A fat woman came to my store today..."
Her panties had Wednesday on them...It's Friday Peg
The best commencement speaker ever!!
Good stuff!
"I got cut from the Steelers the same day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon."
Cannot get more bundyesque
You too. So did Ed wow you both got cut at in the same day dang what bad luck
loved it so much!!! love you ed o'neill :))))))
Very sweet speech. Best commencement speech ever - Conan O'Brien at Dartmouth.
Watching this actually made my day!

Dr. Shoe. 555-SHOE. One of the funniest episodes on Married With Children.
Laugh for laugh, it's in my top five. He Thought He Could with the overdue library book is another one.
@@HerrEllsworth my top three in no particular order: Dr. Shoe. Habib gas attendant, and Upper Unkton, England jousting battle.
Another one that's great is the one where Peg becomes a cosmetics girl and makes more money than Al. Al goes to Burger Trek to make extra $$$ and winds up working for Pauly Shore.
*i donno what to do!*
"The Masculine Feminist" with Jerry Springer, I always get back to Bubbles Double D 🔥🔥🔥

He should've started with "DON'T EVER MARRY!" :-)
"This is your brain...on marriage (egg drops). Any questions?"
He's married in real life so it wouldn't work.
What a humble man
What a great story teller... I could have enjoyed listening to him another 15 minutes, he made his points across without ever boring.
First speech ever and he knocked it out of the park.
He seems like such a great guy. ‘Let’s rock!’ Classic mike drop
He seems like a great guy to just pal around with.
Yeah, he is really a good guy. He nailed Al Bundy for me and that's why I was hooked on that show when I tuned in in 1987. He should've won at least one Emmy for that role.
At the nuddy bar! I love you Ed. 😊😊😊😊😊
Great address! Glad he got cut by the Steelers and rolled the dice and went to NYC. Imagine life without Al Bundy or Jay Pritchett being played by Ed O’Neill.
We might have gotten them anyway! For whatever reason, NFLers moved into series television quite frequently.
"Let's rock".... in only the way Al Bundy can say it.
Lets Rock Al! what a wonderful man
awesome speech! wish I woulda pushed back my graduation date to see this
Makes me wanna go watch "Dutch" (which I've already seen like 10 times already) :-)
Let’s rock 💪
lets not forget another great comedy actor came out of youngstown ...named -JOE FLYNN...FOR HIS DISNEY MOVIES AND MCHALES NAVY
I'm in my 60s too and yeah, it has been a ride. Left college with a degree in English Lit and ended up a member of a bike club. As Al would say,
"Let's rock!!!"
The Moon-joke was priceless! :D :)
I liked the reaction of the guy on the lower right when MWC was mentioned
Congrats Ed!!
I knew what your last line was going to be 😃
God bless!!
The best commencement speech ever! I wish Ed was the speaker at my graduation. I cant even remember who the dickhead was who spoke at my graduation, but these lucky people will never forget that ceremony.
YOUNGSTOWN PRIDE! I love Ed O'Neil so much!
Ditto, baby!!! Still here. Hope it survives all that’s gone on the last few years. But we are fighters...
Happy #LeftHandersDay Ed O'Neill! What a great speech from a great guy!
Big Fan of Ed, I'm watching this for the 1st time. I'm currently momentarily in Ohio by Youngstown.
that was awesome Ed
i'm gratefull to have seen the show here in Indonesia way back in the 90s when i was a kid..it really is a great reminder of how things were, where mostly everything was uncertain yet life was enjoyable..yes those were the days.

i'm so thankfull to my dad to have had let me watch the show(my mother didnt know any english anyway). now i can see that even for just a glimps of moment..i can go back in time memorizing the not so good old society yet filled with enough amount of joyfulness
thanks Oneil
thanks Al Bundy
thanks for the entire show production
thanks dad
We learn from failure. Great speech.
I bet he is the nicest guy you would ever meet.
And now a rebuttal from Amanda Bearse.
Al’s the Best!
All lies.......he was at Polk High and sold shoes at Gary's !
Class speech!!!!!!
0:12 old man remembers Al Bundy
0:22 young man remembers his wife in Modern Family
Great speech.
I'm choked up...
Thumbs up if you thought or hoped there would be mention of scoring four touchdowns in one game.
Al is (Ed) definitely the man 👨. Best show ever 👏
What a great down to earth guy
Fantastic bugger. His movie, Dutch, is a classic.
Al Bundy my favorite Character
all the old guys smiled when she said al bundy,
love it
Legend are made
Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight , the best advice there is !
Some of that stuff sounds like No Maam wisdom. But it is the best wisdom you will ever get anyway.
He was truly nervous at the beginning i think but the speech went off perfectly and the story really is keep going if thats what YOU want not others telling you to stop or you wont make it. you have to keep pushing as random things can happen anyway to help you along. Stay in the fight as if you dont then you already have lost.....
wow. honest, funny, awesome
Part of the introduction should've been: He attended Polk High where he scored four touchdowns in a single game...
What a great guy.
His character of Al with that “of course it failed” attitude was priceless.
Would of been funny if Ed closed his speech with, "And in closing I'd like to say, I hate you all, and I thank no one but myself. As of today, I, Al Bundy, am finished with college. M... V... P!"
PERFECT.
I needed more...auuuu auuu auuuu!!! Yeaaaa!!!!
“careful, I’m behind you…” 😂😂
Just like Kaepernick..out of football straight to shoe sales!!🥿👠👡👢
Unlike kapernick he was successful.
Great Mantra!
Alright AL !!!
I mean Ed. Congratulations Ed. 👍🏻
Hey i think my dad said something about someone in my family from his side playing football with ed
Al was ground breaking. He said he got the part by playing his uncle, a retired judge who was as dry as you can get.
Hearing that Ed O'Neil is NOW giving his honorary degree back to the University, in response to a federally elected election denier being appointed as the new University president, brought me here. VIVA DEMOCRACY !
I never knew he played for the steelers.
He never did. He was cut from training camp.
I believe he played football at Youngstown state.
*Q: any advice or comments to these fine graduates ?"*
*A: Yeh, Hooters hooters yum yum yum, hooters hooters on a girl thats dumb!*
