  • "In the embrace of Barsoom’s arid expanse, the rugged mountains rose like ancient titans, their peaks piercing the cerulean skies. Hrul Marak, Ptormed, Haj Uljat, and the enigmatic Khem journeyed through this formidable terrain, their every step resonating with the echoes of a dying world lost to time."

The folks at Necrotic Gnome were generous in providing the entirety of Old School Essentials Classic Fantasy SRD free of charge. If you're unfamiliar with OSE, it is a retroclone of Moldvey Basic/Expert B/X) Dungeons and Dragons.

Need a setting unique setting? Reddit user Lixuni98 converted two 2e D&D campaign settings to OSE.
Dark Sun is a post-apocalyptic wonderland wasteland hellbent on killing you. Needless to say, its awesome. Thankfully, Lixuni98 provided terrain mechanics in the revised edition.

Spelljammer is basicly D&D in space. If you're into the idea of "Planet of the Week/Month" then Spelljammer is a perfect match for you. You can use the legendary ship itself as a "The Town" and launch expeditions into the vast reaches of Wildspace.

Need more settings? Well, the amazing James Wyatt created the Plane Shift series based on Magic:The Gathering. Now, while not being specifically geared for OSR-style games, they can definitely provide inspiration for your Hexplore24 campaign. Best of all, they're free!
Plane Shift: Zendikar (An adventure world where parties of explorers delve into ancient ruins in search of wonders and treasures, fighting the monsters they encounter on the way.) media.wizards....

Congratulations on your first session on the Hexplore24 challenge! I hope to be joining you on this endeavor soon. I love the idea of this day-by-day progression. Have you given thought as to what you will do if/when your party decides to head back to home base for resupply? Spending 5 days heading back to home base and then 5 days back out might be a dull point and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. At the moment, my idea is to have a 'B-team'. One party will be the people exploring until they reach their limit, then they'll head home. While that team is transitioning, the 'B-team' will explore in a different direction. To keep true to the challenge idea, I'd keep only one team 'carrying the flag' at once, and the other team only travelling through explored hexes.

The return back to "The Town" is just as important as the trek out into the wilderness. While they may not have stumbled across anything specific the first time crossing a hex, that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't while venturing back through that same hex on the return trip. The only static aspect of the hex is the terrain, once that is determined then it's set in stone (pun intended). Features and encounters are still rolled for. Once a feature is actually successfully determined to exist in a hex, then that'll be the only feature for that hex and it too will be a permanent fixture on the map. Encounters can happen at any time throughout the expeditions.
The only safe harbor is The Town. If a party is out in the Wilds on an expedition, you've got to stay with them until they make back to town safely. They don't do anything unless you have them do something while they are exploring. If you want to start a second expedition, then wait until the first returns. Once the party is back in town, it'll be a week for them to resupply, rest up, and possibly recruit NPC retainers. During those downtime activities, you can have the second party begin their own expedition. They can use the information relayed by the first party via the updated community map, or strike out in a completely different direction. From that point, you can leapfrog the groups. There may come a point where both parties are out at the same time, and you'll need to play out both during the same day. With that being said, you might want to "retire" members of the first group for a time if the second group is more successful or more fun to play. That's perfectly okay. The amount of downtime for any one character or group can vary (a week being the minimum) depending on how things are progressing in your game. This is the advantage with having a pool of characters to draw from. The party membership doesn't need to be static.
      Hope that helps
