The Hexplore24 Project | Day 7/366
"Ensconced within the familiar confines of Emtor, the party took respite from their arduous journey. Recognizing the importance of preserving their discoveries and experiences, they dedicated the day to updating the communal map, meticulously detailing the landscapes, encounters, and mysteries they had encountered on their expedition..."

Wilderness Hexplore by Jed McClure. IMHO the best procedural hexcrawl generator.
pdfcoffee.com/wilderness-hexplore-revised-pdf-free.html
The folks at Necrotic Gnome were generous in providing the entirety of Old School Essentials Classic Fantasy SRD free of charge. If you're unfamiliar with OSE, it is a retroclone of Moldvey Basic/Expert B/X) Dungeons and Dragons.

Need a setting unique setting? Reddit user Lixuni98 converted two 2e D&D campaign settings to OSE.
Dark Sun is a post-apocalyptic wonderland wasteland hellbent on killing you. Needless to say, its awesome. Thankfully, Lixuni98 provided terrain mechanics in the revised edition.

Spelljammer is basicly D&D in space. If you're into the idea of "Planet of the Week/Month" then Spelljammer is a perfect match for you. You can use the legendary ship itself as a "The Town" and launch expeditions into the vast reaches of Wildspace.

Need more settings? Well, the amazing James Wyatt created the Plane Shift series based on Magic:The Gathering. Now, while not being specifically geared for OSR-style games, they can definitely provide inspiration for your Hexplore24 campaign. Best of all, they're free!

    This is great. I'm jumping in. I joined over at Reddit so I can see what everyone is doing and learn. Pulling all my recourses together, reading through books, getting maps/keys printed, so come April 1st I can start. House full of company right now and trying to even read a bit is hard. Thank goodness for headphones and getting outside to get some youtube time. lol This is going to be very new for me but that is what is drawing me to it. I like that it's I guess what you could say bite sizes pieces of a game each day, so I can learn a little each day as my group moves. Since its just me playing, if I have to sit and research for a few about a rule or the best way to do something, then great! That's how we learn. I'll get my characters hopefully started this week too so come the 1st I'm set to start. I probably won't post on the reddit group, just lurking, user name is myredditusername0011 so you may have seen I joined, pretty sure you are the main mod, but I could be wrong. I've been buying up resources and grabbing free stuff lately trying to figure out exactly how I wanted to go about playing a solo rpg so I have a lot in front of me on my computer that I'm ready to put to use. I am going to try not to use too many things, I think that will make it harder if I overwhelm myself.

    This might be what I was looking for. Been trying to start solo rpg. I'm getting stuck on the story, the reason to go out on this adventure, the plot. Maybe no story, no plot, maybe that is the way. Thank you for the resources. I've never played anything where I had more than one pc, so gotta think how I want to handle that and I think I'll watch the other videos you have up of your play to get a good feel and figure out how I want to do everything. I tried for about two years to get into online d&d groups but my schedule just doesn't allow it. Love the idea of a few minutes each day, play when I can. I have heard so much good stuff about OSE. Thanks for the inspiration. I've been playing some pnp dungeon crawlers but been trying to figure out a more long term type game and this might just fit that.

    Congratulations on your first session on the Hexplore24 challenge! I hope to be joining you on this endeavor soon. I love the idea of this day-by-day progression. Have you given thought as to what you will do if/when your party decides to head back to home base for resupply? Spending 5 days heading back to home base and then 5 days back out might be a dull point and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. At the moment, my idea is to have a 'B-team'. One party will be the people exploring until they reach their limit, then they'll head home. While that team is transitioning, the 'B-team' will explore in a different direction. To keep true to the challenge idea, I'd keep only one team 'carrying the flag' at once, and the other team only travelling through explored hexes.

    • @MonstersMazes
      @MonstersMazes 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The return back to "The Town" is just as important as the trek out into the wilderness. While they may not have stumbled across anything specific the first time crossing a hex, that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't while venturing back through that same hex on the return trip. The only static aspect of the hex is the terrain, once that is determined then it's set in stone (pun intended). Features and encounters are still rolled for. Once a feature is actually successfully determined to exist in a hex, then that'll be the only feature for that hex and it too will be a permanent fixture on the map. Encounters can happen at any time throughout the expeditions. The only safe harbor is The Town. If a party is out in the Wilds on an expedition, you've got to stay with them until they make back to town safely. They don't do anything unless you have them do something while they are exploring. If you want to start a second expedition, then wait until the first returns. Once the party is back in town, it'll be a week for them to resupply, rest up, and possibly recruit NPC retainers. During those downtime activities, you can have the second party begin their own expedition. They can use the information relayed by the first party via the updated community map, or strike out in a completely different direction. From that point, you can leapfrog the groups. There may come a point where both parties are out at the same time, and you'll need to play out both during the same day. With that being said, you might want to "retire" members of the first group for a time if the second group is more successful or more fun to play. That's perfectly okay. The amount of downtime for any one character or group can vary (a week being the minimum) depending on how things are progressing in your game. This is the advantage with having a pool of characters to draw from. The party membership doesn't need to be static. Hope that helps

    I was also curious: If we naturally come across dungeons during our adventuring would taking time to explore then rather than focusing on the hexploring go against the spirit of the game?

    • @MonstersMazes
      @MonstersMazes 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you come across a dungeon and spend a day or week exploring, go for it. Just keep track of the time in it. You don't have to finish it in one sitting, the characters can return to it periodically.

I am really eager to get cracking on this one and I’m hoping to have other folks join in on it as time goes on. I think it’s more engaging and rewarding than the dungeon23 personally, since it seems far more reactive and there’s more room for growth and organic storyline to arise. Not sure if I missed it but what are you using for your random encounter chart? I just started using the back of the old Monster Manual II

      It's generated from the dungeon encounter list in Old School Essentials advanced fantasy. I rolled 5 times on level one, and once on level 2, for a total of six encounters.

    Hey man, thanks for this! You read my mind w running a solo dungeon campaign. I have a TTRPG system that I created that I am wanting to show off and #Dungeon23 is perfect for it. Keep it up my man, I'll be watching and good luck on the new channel! Subscribed.
