The MixPre is primarily a field recorder while the RODECaster Pro is primarily a podcast recorder. So it really depends on what you’re doing. But yes, the RODECaster Pro is generally easier to operate for studio.
Yes, you can use MixAssist at the same time. I'll need to check to see if you can use it as an audio interface and a controls surface at the same time with a powered USB hub...cannot remember off the top of my head.

Hi Curtis, what would you recommend for recording a group of people at a meeting (4 to 10 +)? Pressure zone microphones on the table, lavs ,conference systems like Philips DPM8900 or else? I find it quite difficult to handle. Thanks in advance!
Ideally, each person would have their own dynamic microphone. But if that isn't feasible, then I'd probably go with a boundary mic or mics on the table. Will still need to mix. Best wishes!
@@curtisjudd I ended up setting USB 1 to stereo out Left, USB 2 to stereo out Right after applying your settings and I think that completed my output recording issues.
Maybe a dumb question, but since we are sending channels 1/2 out of the L output, does that mean they will only hear audio out of their left speaker, or am I just missing something? Im assuming it doesnt matter since the way they are getting audio would be completely dependent on how they have their audio setup, is this correct? Thanks in advance Curtis, your videos are always so helpful.
Is it possible to do mix minus by connecting headphones/line out to aux in ( channels 5/6 on Mixpre) and Mixpre stereo out to line/aux in on computer? Say if you were powering the Mixpre by battery or with power adapter ( not using it as an audio interface)? Hope I am not the only one who tried a mix minus this way. Thanks Curtis, been wanting someone to do this video since the original Mixpres released ( a long long time ago).
@@curtisjudd I gave up on the Mixpre minus, as I never got it working. Another scenario is more than two people ( Mixpre 6 connected as USB audio interface) in the same room, on PC , obs and streamlabs, your stream will only hear the first two mics, anyone else will only be heard coming through someone else's mic, even though in headphones it sounds fine. Mixpre series is very nice gear. However without experience, most people would need a very detailed manual. That is something most people would gladly pay for.

Hello, a question ... how can I connect a smartphone (Android) to a MixPre6 gen1 with a small one. Rode NTG4? .. I want a sound control and a better quality in a Live on youtube ... I connected the smartphone to the port (stereo out) but further on there is no control on Channel 1 (Gain) .. it is possible this combination? thanks
Hi Ninel, are you streaming from the phone and need to get the audio from the MixPre into the phone? I think you'll need a TRS to TRRS adapter as phones usually expect a TRRS input. Something like this should do the job: bhpho.to/31drMgK Full disclosure - this is an affiliate link. As an affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
Does this mean the guest would only hear you out of their left channel? Also, would this mix minus work for the 3.5mm stereo output going into a camera (say for a livestream pulling audio from the video source)?
Hi kimihyeon, I wish I could but I do not have a Clarett on hand to do the comparison. I'm assuming you're trying to buy one device for field recording and as an audio interface? I can say that the preamps are great on the MixPre so you certainly would not be sacrificing quality there.
Hi Curtis, thanks a lot for your reviews! Recently I purchased a Mixpre 6 II and I find that the signal on input 1 is stronger than input 2 by about 2 to 3dB (I checked with the LUFS-Analytics tool in Audition, matched pair of microphones plus I switched sides). Is this normal? If I record stereo, I have to normalize the channels separately to get the levels right, which is a bit frustrating...
Since I am only beginning into the podcast space, and sadly I am based in Hong Kong, anyway I can get around to not buying a mixpre? I do have a Zoom H5, installed OBS on my laptop, also have audacity, I did order an audio interface (NI Komplete 2 although with COVID-19 around no one knows when I can get this). Thank you.

Hi @curtisjudd! I would like to share with you what I think is a bug that I have found in MIXPRE10-II. To reproduce it just follow these steps: + Set your L output and add a delay + Set USB1 output to L output +The delay is NOT applied in the USB signal but it is applied in the L output. What I expect if I set a relation between L and a USB output is to get EXACTLY the same, including the delay. And as you can see it is NOT the case. This is important because if I want to define a mix minus for Zoom or Skype for example, and I am using an external camera, I need to add a delay to sync audio and video in the laptop and it is not possible to do with this bug using the MIXPRE-10 II as an audio interface. I have communicated this info to Sound Devices but I think it would be useful for you too.
Thanks Daniel, I appreciate the info. The delay feature is mainly for syncing digital wireless systems and wired mics or a feed from a digital mixing board and wired mics. The 30ms max delay generally is not enough for syncing video where 30ms is less than a frame at 24fps. Nevertheless, this is a problem if using one of the scenarios above - digital wireless or digital mixing board.
Curtis Judd I am talking about the mixpre10 and the delay function related to outputs not inputs. Sorry if my previous explanation was not right :-) That functionality is only available in the mixpre10
Curtis Judd let’s see if I have an answer from sound devices about the issue. It is really a problem if you want to create a mix minus using an external camera with Zoom or similar.
The connectors with better strain relief make the cables last longer. Neutrik connectors are often are thought of as the best for common cabling. If you want a value cable, the Hosa Pro line use Rean connectors (I think Chinese licensed old-style Neutrik connectors) and 90% shielded cables. These are heavy 20 AWG wire and the added weight may bother people. Canare Star-Quad cables at 95%+ shielded and use genuine Neutrik connectors as do Mogami Gold cables if you have the cash to burn. None of this for short runs will sound significantly different than a decent generic cable. The warranty and decent construction may make them worth the cost. !
Agreed with Bangs - you're mostly paying for durability and long life with the more expensive cables. The cheaper cables have a tendency to short out or fail when one of the solder points fail inside the connectors due to stress on the cables. I use custom Mogami cables with Neutrik connectors which are made by my local pro audio shop. In my mind, they're worth the price as they've been in service for years. I cannot say I can hear a difference, I just find that the more expensive cables have a longer service life.
Hi AZIZ, the MixPre is made primarily for video and podcast production so it does not come with a reverb or other types of effects commonly used in music. You can add the Musician plugin which adds reverb as well as a couple of other effects, but not a proper compressor or EQ. If you need those things, you're probably better off with a more traditional mixing board with those effects. Best wishes!
Hello Aziz, As Curtis explained, the MixPre is mainly for video sound recording and podcast production. It's a very good product. However, what you just asked will be easier - and logical - to achieve with a mixer like the RODECaster Pro (but it differs a little from a traditional mixer, even concerning the effects that can be applied). Besides, Curtis talked about it and showed it in detail in his previous videos. And for the "direct" effects, it's rather achievable with "ordinary' mixers
@@ahmedadambd1939 Thank you so much .. On clarification, Mr. Ahmed .. I have libraries: VST and I was thinking of using it for this mixer .. via REAPER
This is a little off topic but relates to the mixpre. I just purchased a mixpre 6 II, and it appears that I may need a special software to handle the 32 bit float files. Will Apple’s logic pro work? If not, is there something out there that’s not crazy expensive?
Davinci Resolve is also worth a look and is free. It will read and process 32-bit float audio files, but the waveform graphics are not rendered correctly.
Iwata has a new RGB LED light called Iwata Master. It's a new form factor, tube form light. What do you think of this light and form factor? th-cam.com/video/aPlsn1E8Kp0/w-d-xo.html

I don't use them too often as a key light, however. But really useful as a rim or effects light. And the Iwata Master looks to be well made.

Thanks for the video , does this mix-minus works with loud speaker too ? As some guest prefer speaker over headphone. Thanks
I don’t recommend that but yes, it will mot play back their own voice in their speakers.
@@curtisjuddthanks, its headache when bosses have their own preference , i will try lower the speaker volume as much as possible , i am also considering Rodecaster pro with all channel already mixminus enabled , while sound device seem harder to use by non-techy people? The MixPre is primarily a field recorder while the RODECaster Pro is primarily a podcast recorder. So it really depends on what you’re doing. But yes, the RODECaster Pro is generally easier to operate for studio.
@@curtisjudd thanks for your explanation 🙏
does this setup work on the Zoom app as well? Thanks in advance!
Yes.
That's a great tip! And can we use AutoMix or use physical Control faders like the Korg Nano the same time while it's connected to computer?
Yes, you can use MixAssist at the same time. I'll need to check to see if you can use it as an audio interface and a controls surface at the same time with a powered USB hub...cannot remember off the top of my head.
What do we select as our microphone and speaker in Zoom when doing this? Do we select the MixPre as the microphone since we're sending our signal through the MixPre?
Yes. And also set the speaker to MixPre if you'll be using headphones connected to the MixPre.
Is the Mix-Pre good for streaming to Twitch with my Mac Studio?
Sure.
Hi Curtis,
Really sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but really new to TH-cam. My question is I need to film and record four people sat in a semi circle in a 6ft arch. I’m thinking one microphone on a boom in the centre above the talent so about three feet from everyone. Will one microphone achieve this and if so witch one? Budget around $500 ish. We have a tascam pre amp.
It can work, yes, though it is ideal for each person to have their own mic. Something like a RODE NT5 should do the job.
Curtis can you do this on the Zoom F6 as well?
I didn’t see a way when I quickly checked, unfortunately. Will look more closely when I’ve got a bit of time.
@@curtisjudd Thanks, I really appreciate it.
Great video, Curtis! I have the first MixPre version. Is the expanded outputs menu only available on the Mixpre 3 II? I'm only seeing St Out Mute, St. Out Gain, St. Out Left and St. Out Right. I'm not seeing USB Output. Thanks for your help! :)
Hi Jason, yes, will still work with the original MixPre series, just confirmed on my original MixPre-10T here. Make sure you're on the latest firmware which is currently version 6.0. Best wishes!
@@curtisjudd Ahah! I was definitely behind on a firmware update! Thank you so much Curtis. And thank you in general. You've been an immense help over the years and I am very thankful for you and your channel! Have a great day! :)
Would this setup work for a Zoom chat? Say if it were just me on Channel 1 and I ran the Mix Minus on Channel 2 for all of the people I see on my screen. Would this eliminate echoing on the people I am talking to/viewing?
Yes, and in fact, Zoom’s echo cancellation will usually manage that as well.
@@curtisjudd Thanx a lot :)
What do you set your Output>Stereo Out Right setting? Do you leave it blank?
Also down in the bottom, I see ISO, is that a custom setting you have?
I don't bother with the stereo out right. Just leave it at default. Nothing custom here, just be sure you're in advanced mode.
@@curtisjudd I ended up setting USB 1 to stereo out Left, USB 2 to stereo out Right after applying your settings and I think that completed my output recording issues.

Another question, is it possible to get two mix minuses, setup with the mixpre 6, and have them hear each other, without including software?
I don't see a way to do that, unfortunately.
They'll get a single mono channel of audio which in 99.9% of cases is configured to play back in both L&R on their side.
Hadn’t thought of that. But if it is working, that’s great!
Could the two people who disliked this video bury their heads in shame please. Human psychology is a complex thing, eh?
Hahaha! Thanks Patrick.
Probably dislexya is to blame here. These guys focused on the tumbsUP and they hit the thumbsDown....only reasonable explanation. Or maybe a former girlfriend....we never know...
Something like this should do the job: bhpho.to/31drMgK

Hi, I'd love to see your take on a Rode NT-SF1, or is that a too specialized a microphone for your channel?
I would, too. 😀 First I need the budget so I can buy it.
@@curtisjudd Yes it's expensive, but perhaps Rode will sent you one. If they had half a brain they would.
Hahaha!
Does this mean the guest would only hear you out of their left channel? Also, would this mix minus work for the 3.5mm stereo output going into a camera (say for a livestream pulling audio from the video source)?
No, they'd hear the same thing in both channels. And yes, this would work for the 3.5mm output.
Hey Curtis, nice video is it possible to do a mix minus on the Zoom F8n.
Unfortunately, I don't believe it is. The F8n's routing doesn't support this level of routing.
Can you compare mixpre ii and focusrite, say clarett? I am thinking about using mixpre as a audio interface, and want to know if it is a good idea.
I haven’t noticed this on my MixPres. Probably best to contact Sound Devices support. Beat wishes!
@@curtisjudd Thank you for your quick reply! I'll do that.

Hi @curtisjudd!
I would like to share with you what I think is a bug that I have found in MIXPRE10-II.
To reproduce it just follow these steps:
+ Set your L output and add a delay
+ Set USB1 output to L output
+The delay is NOT applied in the USB signal but it is applied in the L output.
Sorry if my previous explanation was not right :-)
That functionality is only available in the mixpre10
Ah, thanks, understood now. Handy - up to almost 9 frame delay range at 24p. Thanks for the clarification.
And interesting that is is only available on the MixPre-10T and 10 II. Likely a bit more buffer space available...
Curtis Judd let’s see if I have an answer from sound devices about the issue. It is really a problem if you want to create a mix minus using an external camera with Zoom or similar.
Curtis I'm a sound newbie, does the xlr cable make any difference in a recording and what would you recommend that's good value for the money?
If it were not for content creators I wouldn’t understand WHY to do something, that manufacturers try to explain themselves in an instruction manual.
👍
Hello, my friend, how are you ..
You talk a lot about this blender.
You didn't tell us if I can stream live with sounds like: Reverb + sound effects
Hello Aziz,
As Curtis explained, the MixPre is mainly for video sound recording and podcast production.

This is a little off topic but relates to the mixpre. I just purchased a mixpre 6 II, and it appears that I may need a special software to handle the 32 bit float files. Will Apple’s logic pro work? If not, is there something out there that’s not crazy expensive?
Reaper is a great starting point. www.sounddevices.com/32-bit-float-applications/
Looks nice! I use tube lights for rims quite often. They are soft in one dimension which means they don't take up a lot of room when you're in a constrained space. I don't use them too often as a key light, however. But really useful as a rim or effects light. And the Iwata Master looks to be well made.
