Still easily one of the best all round shmups of the 16-bit generation imo. And is goes beyond the expected fun shooting action and into how you can select from three pilots with slightly different attributes to start, the way you can choose your missions in a non-linear order and go off on bonus bombing runs and stuff too, how you can upgrade to new aircraft and a whole host of specials from the shop, how collecting money therefore has a real purpose, how the weapon power up system is actually very satisfying, how you don't die instantly and have to restart the level or whatever any time you take a hit, etc. Just a genuinely really well designed shmup game, with gorgeous visuals, great audio, excellent controls, satisfying level design and enemy attack patters, challenging but enjoyable boss battles, and just extremely fun gameplay overall. S tier on SNES for sure.

I can just barely remember the cartoon for Area 88. My older cousin had this game later on, and I would watch him play. I don’t know why, but he used to joke stupidly that Greg survived the most dangerous missions because he overslept and missed the action. I wonder if that was in the cartoon or manga.

Is there any difference depending on the character u play with?

Shin levels up faster than the others. Mickey can carry more special weapons at a time. Greg regains control of the plane almost instantly if you're hit.

Would you say Greg is the hardest character to play through? Thanks.

Way late to this, but I think it's quite the opposite. My friends and I always considered Greg easy mode in this game because of his ability to regain control of the plane almost instantly if you're hit. He's really good for beginners learning the game since you can afford to make mistakes more, but once you learn all the patterns in the game the others become more optimal. I'd say Shin is intermediate, while Overall I'd say Mickey is the hardest but also has the highest potential, because if you really know the game you'll rarely get hit and eventually you'll catch up to Shin's level up rate if you play well anyways; leaving Mickey's ability to carry more weapons invaluable, especially when you get the Efreet.
