    Cool. He is doing a full Civ game to go with Tiny Epic Civ. Age of Civilization is Tiny Epic Civ.

    wow this looks good. I love the shared science and the way player powers work. are you going to do a full runthrough of this? id love to see how the dice rolling for combat plays out

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      nope fraid not. the publisher didn't have the budget for a full runthrough, so we tried out a lower cost "rundown" where i just do a single turn and try to explain as much as i can!

    After months of nothing really catching my eye, now the games seem to be lining up. I've never played a civ game, and this one is looking like a likely candidate to be my first.
    Just a few questions:
    1.) I love how they have handled the use of combat in this game That said, on the Rahdo scale, how mean is this game?
    2.) I see that this game has 18 turns, roughly equivalent to those in Ada's Dream (Another game I'm seriously considering and that looks more like my sweet spot for games). Which one of these games play's faster in your experience. How would you compare the play time to something like Weather Machine? (I adore WM, thanks for your play through on that one)
    3. Does this game have a string story arc? (You can see more of this idea in my reply to one of your other comments here.) It appears that it would, but it is hard to judge with just one turn. Previewing the future epoch cards does seem that it would emphasise this aspect.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1) the attacking is fairly mean, but the cost is so great to do it and the need so small because there are other things you can do with those cards that encourage you to attack, so overall i'd say warfare is nearly completely ignorable :)
      2) i'd say a typical turn in this game is shorter than a typica ada turn so i'd probably say epochs is slightly shorter than ada, ,but not by much. to be honest, it, ada and weather are all 2.5 hour games for me and jen. hard to say which is shorter, oonce you get to that game length they all feel sort of the same, legnth wise to me :)
      3) yes. to get a sense for it, check th-cam.com/video/pddfcolzrRI/w-d-xo.html and you can jump to near the end of the game to get a sense of how big things have gotten.

    Any thoughts on the Military action for 2 players? It's not totally care-bear friendly, but it does seem to discourage it somewhat.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      a lot of these kinds of games bill themselves as "hey, if you don't want to attack, it's no big deal, you can just ignore that part of the game", but i often find that not to be the case because combat is so woven in and if you're ignoring it, you're not playing to peak efficiency and things just feel "off" because you might have special powers or cards or stuff that encourages you to fight.
      but in this game, since the invention cards are multi-use, if you get a combat one dealt to you, just discard it to do another action on the board, and you don't feel compelled to "make it work somehow". a few of the civs have 1 power of their 4 that is focused on fighting, but the nice thing if you have one of them you can ignore that one option because you've got 3 others to choose from, and you're only ever going to activate 2 of the 4 anyway. the mongolia civ does have 2 of it's 4 special powers devoted to fighting, but even then, you can ignore those 2 and use the other 2, you just have a little bit less variability with them.
      since there's such a huge price to starting battles with other players you really need to set yourself up with some special combat powers to make it worthwhile. and since you've got options that let you ignore those special combat powers, you never feel "there's something missing" if you don't go down that road :)

    Hi Rahdo, how do you see Epochs compared to Nations?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      nations is tought to beat as it's in my top10 games of all time, and that's in part because i prefer that it does away with the world map and lets us focus just on the development of our society. if i preferred having a map that i'm trying to conquer, i'd probably rate epochs higher :)

    Did this give you any feelings similar to Through the Ages?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      not really... through the ages with its lack of map is much more abstract and is much more about the draft, while this is a broader game where drafting is only one small part :)

    Preview vs runthrough? Are you going to do a runthrough also or a preview is done instead of runthrough?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      no full runthrough this time, just this "1-turn rundown" preview. it's an option we're starting to offer publishers who want a lower cost sponsorship option.
      i will talk about the game and our experience playing it in the monthly roundup though (since i always talk about all games we play, sponsored or not) which would be a sort of mini-final thoughts though. that'll be up by the end of the week :)

      @@rahdo I see. I think you know that review won't give us such a feeling of a game like runthrough does. You underlined it so many times that watching a runthroughs is something that we should do before spending our money on a given game. How to fit this new format to this idea? Maybe it is a good question to your Q&A session 😀. Personally I never watch reviews as I am not interested much on reviewer opinion. I know that you tried hard (and thank you for that) but based on this video I cannot say if I like the game or not.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      well this is still a runthrough... i'm going through a turn and demonstrating the flow of play and articulating strategies and making choices to achieve those strategies. it's just that there won't be a 2nd or 3rd or 4th or 5th turn, so i'm having to describe some of the more complex elements up front instead of demonstrating them later.
      i expect some people will prefer this approach because it means i cover most everything in the game in a fraction of the time it would normally take me, but others won't like it because i'm talking about things a bit more and demonstrating things a bit less.
      but the core gameplay is still represented pretty well here i think, or i wouldn't have done it this way at all! :)

      @@rahdo I do agree that you did a fantastic job of showing how a turn will feel. What I am missing here is the feel for the overall story arc of the game. If I find myself that interested in a game then I always watch your extended play through coverage. There has been more than one game that I really enjoyed there exposition of it, but the end game was so bad that it killed the entire game for me. I perfect example of this is Raiders of the North Sea: Great mechanisms and buildup in the beginning of the game, and then the end game rears it's ugly head and win or lose I feel cheated. A sense of story arc or progression is one of the most important features of a game for me.
