When Jason went to the Mets he bought a house in my town to raise his family. He was a great guy, kids would leave baseballs in his fence for him to sign, and he would do it every time. Might not have been a great Met, but he was a great guy. One of the reasons I became a Mets fan.
Id argue the ORIGINAL dimension in Citi Field were INCREDIBLY unforgiving and, on top of the injuries, were cause of his STEEP decline

i always thought this too, but i used to think most people would find it a little silly but those original citi field, bigger outfield ugly brown walls, dimensions were intimidating to a lot of batters and did a number mentally on david wright and jason bay especially

I remember I played MLB the Show 07 a bunch as a kid. For some reason in career mode the Mets would always trade for Jason Bay. So when he signed I was thrilled! It was written in the stars! Then he kept getting hurt and the prophecy was forgotten.
I dunno, the Mets signing a big name free agent who then becomes permanently injured...that sounds like a prophecy fulfilled

The thing I remember most about Bay and what kept me rooting for him the entire time was that he brought his 110% every game, no matter how bad he was doing. No matter how obvious an out and routine a play a ground ball was, he busted it down the line. And, like you said, all of his injuries came from him doing whatever he could to try and make a play. Dude was a gamer.
I truly believe the Citi Field dimensions with his injuries piled on top and extremely poor concussion management is what ruined the end of his career. The Mets did it to Ryan Church a couple years before too
JO, I think I can explain it. As someone who has had multiple concussions in a short period (less than 18 months) your entire brain wiring just never resets. Even for someone who does mostly writing at my age I found hitting the keyboard (I was an extremely accurate & fast typist) to never be the same. And that is an easy activity compared to hitting a baseball. Add to that how it plays with timing in other areas and you start to gain other injuries. I totally get it with Bay, and a reminder that sports is brutal, and if a guy isn't loafing, we need to have a lot of grace with them. Hard enough to see & hit a baseball on your best day. When the brain isn't perfect?
Those original dimensions at Citi Field and the Great Wall of Flushing were brutal. So glad they moved the fences in.

I'm sure most people already know this, but I just recently found out when the Sox asked Manny to write a list of teams he would approve a trade to, that list included Pawtucket.
As a Red Sox fan I actually got upset when we let Jason Bay leave in free agency.
He was a great player and could've been so much more.

Agree. He was fun to watch, with a quiet personality, and unlike other "stars" (e.g. Crawford, Renteria, Sandoval) was able to thrive in Boston.

@@sister_bertrille911 Oh yeah, Crawford was a huge disappointment. Renteria I didn't even think of as a "star", and the Panda...I don't even know. If I remember correctly, he put up bad numbers in months that begin with "A", "M", and "J", but good numbers in months beginning with "S", "O", and...did he even get any November baseball? I seem to remember the Giants getting through their World Series wins pretty quickly and the first of them was before the playoffs expanded. I mean, September and the playoffs are where the spotlight shines brightest, but if you can barely stay over the Mendoza line for the majority of the season, is it really worth it?

Awesome video! Though as a Cubs fan, it would be really interesting to see a video about Kosuke Fukudome. We signed him in 2008, where we had an awesome team that won the Central, and he came out hotter than any player I’ve seen. There was so much excitement around him in Chicago, but he fizzled out pretty quickly. But was electric for a month or two there. Could make for an intriguing topic

@@acenace24 Absolutely, I remember him for sure. Was definitely a great piece for the Bucs in 2015 when they won 98 games. He came over at age 28, so he was an older rookie, but he just never replicated his rookie success. Legal issues clearly played a big role.

I remember him on the Red Sox. As we share a name, he quickly became one of my favorite players. He was also a hitting monster on this baseball game I had on my DS.
J Bay was a top ten player for a short while, one of my childhood favorites on the Bucs
bro those 3 winning seasons were probably the craziest time to be a mets fan. 06 beltran starred at 3-2 curveball with the bases loaded..... 07 the mets lost the lead of the divison with 17 games to play....they had a 7 game lead..... and in 08 they lost it again on the last day of the season and let the brewers sneak into the playoffs.....smh and then they didnt even get back to the playoffs until 15..... damn just re reading that i cant believe thats how i started my watching of this team and im still a loyal fan to this day lmmfao.

I stopped watching MLB Baseball in about 2011. So I never heard how his career ended. It's so weird that injuries ended it because as You said. He constantly played 145 games or more. He was a hell of a player. I wish him well. But it really is wild hearing this stuff.

Nah - bad comparisons. Neither one of them were guys who had ONE good season. Wright got hurt and Bay got traded to a place he couldn't handle playing in. It's obvious what Wright would have done - just like Don Mattingly - they would have been Hall of Famers. They just got hurt. Bay - regardless of injuries and UNLIKE Wright - simply didn't belong in NY

I grew up during the 2000's and got my first exposure to baseball during Bay's peak. Him, Freddy Sanchez, and Jack Wilson made the team bearable to watch despite having some of the worst pitching I've ever seen. It's really amazing to know we wasted such great talent and botched the trades (who the fuck is Tim Alderson and why did we not manage to turn him into a star?) that we eventually did because they knew they'd never resign for us after years and years of wasted time.
We actually had good pitchers, but we kept ruining them: Tom Gorzelanny, Zach Duke, Ian Snell Oliver Perez...these guys were all legitimate major league pitchers that we got one good year out of each and then used up before cutting, only for them to recover to certain degrees elsewhere (usually as relievers)
Oliver Perez was great in 2004 as a 22 year old, but was given almost 200 innings that year, battled arm injuries for the next few years, had one more good season as a starter then became a LOOGY
Zach Duke had a good debut, then we taxed his arm with 200 innings a year from age 23-26 and he never pitched as well again (though he eventually resurfaced as a lefty specialist for many years)
Tom Gorzelanny had a good 2007 at age 24, but he also had a 200 innings that year and never pitched as well again (though he had several excellent years as a long reliever and swingman)
Ian Snell pitched well at ages 24-25, but had 400 innings between those two seasons, and never pitched as well again
There was also Paul Maholm, Matt Capps, Salomon Torres, Mike Gonzalez, Ryan Vogelsong...no stars but quality pitchers all
If you can believe it, Alderson was once thought of as highly as another pitching prospect in the Giants’ system coming up at the same time named Madison Bumgarner. Imagine if the Pirates traded for him instead.

Saw the graphic that he was one of only nine players to have 180+ 2Bs and HRs from '04-'09. Being a huge Cubs fan, I wanted to compare those numbers with Derrek Lee, who I thought would be on that list. He easily made it with 2Bs, but just missed on HRs; I had forgotten about his injury in '06
I remember those days like it were yesterday. I couldn’t help but root for him for his hustle. I remember so many times he hit the ball to the left side of the infield and being thrown out by inches simply because of his hustle.
As a Mets fan I can say that I respect Bay for trying his hardest. The man just couldn’t stay healthy, and when he was healthy he was just coming off of injury, so it would make sense why his production would have been down. I wish the guy the best
i partially blame the citi field owners and architects for making the dimensions much bigger and intimidating to batters compared to shea stadium
As a Mets fan myself, it was hard to watch Bay. Not cause he was struggling, but because he always played hard, and was a team guy. Much respect for him, and did always like him on the team, despite the struggles

Baseball is a tough game. The damage of concussions and the exponential impact they have upon the body's inability to process information through the input-output channels of our brains is devastating. Even with all we understand about concussion syndrome, the medical establishment will tell you, we still do not understand the full extent of the damage, but we do know that each concussion, subsequent to the first one comes easier, takes longer to heel and, perhaps starting with and including the initial concussion the damage may not ever truly heal. And in a game like baseball, where we ask the human brain to react and achieve that which is a technical impossibility, to hit a ball being thrown at 90mph from 60 feet 6 inches away, it is easy to understand why a promising athlete was knocked down a rung with each incident. Looking to get back up, and realizing the rungs are no longer even present.
In a game like football, where the brains to brawn ratio tips towards the muscle, and all you need to do is remember to not grab and hold on to the other player when blocking him, and when you get home, don't kick your dog or smack your old lady, dealing with concussion syndrome is hard enough, but situational baseball and staying back on a breaking ball, yet being able to reach to the heat, uhhhhh probably not going to last very long after one too many bumps on the head.
Padres fan here. I find it kind of funny that we traded Bay to the Pirates for Brian Giles because Giles was an All-Star and hit for power once upon a time. He gets to San Diego and just gets base hits and walks and I watch Bay become a great player.... hahah, Great. I guess the spacious Petco park would have hurt him like the Mets spacious park as well.
It’s pretty simple. Most players aren’t good past the age of 30. Especially a guy like Bay who had to be past the 80th (maybe even 90th) percentile in highest strikeout rate. They usually have long swings and when they lose bat speed as they age, well, you know what happens. See: Ryan Howard. Edit: oh wow i forgot about Bay's concussions. It seemed to really have a major long term impact on him.

One of the points outlined was that his skillset equates to a very high probability in regards to longevity due to him being the complete opposite of the type of player you're describing.
Concussions are a son of a bitch, and I think Jason Bay can attest to it. Concussions really seem to be career enders for hitters and its incredibly sad.

Is it that perplexing? The dude took a lot of head injuries into his 30’s…and the Mets of that era had no analytics and therefore the coaches couldn’t offer much to their players.
Jason Bay was the MAN for like a year in a half lol. I remember having his rookie card as a kid and thinking it would pay for my future childrens college one day 😂
I used to watch Bay when he was in Triple A playing for Portland Beavers. He was one of those guys who was obviously too good for the minors. His average exit velocity (wasn't a stat back then lol) woulda been pretty crazy I imagine. When he connected it was a noticeably different sound than the typical crack of the bat.

I’m a lifelong Met fan and I never dogged on Bay. Guy was terrible for us BUT busted his ass day in and day out. Dude played with heart and hustled his ass off. Nothing but respect for Bay.

I think I remember reading an article saying that it was Jeff Wilpon was the one who caused Bay to get back on the field before he was ready after suffering from the concussions. Not 100% if that was what happened exactly but considering how concussions can become easier and easier to get after the first occurrence, it might somewhat explain why Bay collapsed the way he did with the Mets along with the other injuries. The old Citi Field dimensions also did him no favors at the plate or in the field.
Pedro Martinez also claims that Jeff forced him to pitch through injuries in 05 for the sake of ticket sales for a Pedro/Dontrelle Willis match up. So that sounds reasonable.
Oh, I’m certain that’s what happened. Jeff Wilpon ruined Ike Davis’s career, too. And Jed Lowrie’s. (And Pedro’s, as another comment reminded me.) And the careers of who knows how many others. And the fortunes of the Mets, in general. Guy’s an evil, narcissistic bastard. He and David Samson of the Marlins were easily the most hated executives in baseball. They each think they’re amazing geniuses, but nobody else does. Took a year to deep-clean his stink out of Citi Field, and they’re not totally done yet, though mercifully, it seems like they’ve gotten most of it.

yeah concussions can fuck ya up. I never had migraines in my life til after my last concussion, now I have one every month or two that's so bad I can barely walk.
I remember him being on the Red Sox. He was really good. Sad what happened to him with the injuries and setbacks. He was from Canada, where my ancestors are from, so I wanted him to do well, but I guess he fizzled out after his career year. Great guy, though.

The Art Howe years were some of the worst to experience. I remember getting into baseball as a kid then and loving the mets but they sucked so bad with big names.
bro ive been watching this team since 2006. and i just want to say that i remember the jason bay signing was basically the biggest acqusition of the offseason. They just opened up citi field and in 09 there was alot of injuries and no home runs. Who do they get? a player that doesnt really get injured and hits bombs. well it never came to be. and he is apart of the reasons on why the fences were moved in....ontop of noone else hitting homeruns. im glad someone else remembers hahahaha
I’m not usually one to feel bad for baseball players because of how much money they make even on the minimum salary, but I do feel a little bit for Bay because you can tell he really was trying and wasn’t just coasting through the contract.

Watching these clips makes me feel bad for Bay. He clearly hit his head and broke his ribs too many times sacrificing his body for his team. Not his fault in the slightest.
Bay was never the same after his first concussion. He could just never stay on the field and when he was just wasn't the same player.
Bay was my favorite player as a young Pirates fan. I'm sorry that Mets fans didn't get to have the same experience with him in LF as we did. He was really great.
i just watched the chris coghlan forgotten rookie of the year and instead of knowing my brothers birthday i know angel berroa won 2003 AL ROY and looked at others and saw 02 eric hinske and 04 bobby crosby neftali feliz jeremy hellickson in the AL and geovany soto in 08 NL etc. rookies of the year and that was the only year lol or just a review of award winners and what happened could be a good series

Funny fact about Jason Bay being traded to the Pirates when they were doing the trade for Brian Giles the Pirates originally wanted Xavier Nady But the Padres convinced the Pirates to take Bay instead And to this day still only pirate to win rookie of the year which is not a good thing for a cheap franchise that only wants to rely on its prospects to give them success
And the Pirates ended up getting Nady a few yrs later from the Mets in the Oliver Perez deal.
Really the Pirates probably should’ve just kept Giles if he would’ve played a few more years a PNC Park which was Taylor made for his batting swing he probably would’ve made the Hall of Fame which would’ve been better for the franchise

The jason bay contract is what sunk the wright/reyes/beltran mets. Instead of getting matt holiday to add to the core, they went bargain bin shopping and got the cheaper “free agent splash”💦 jason bay. Those mets team were always 1 player short of being good since delgado went down.

It's a standard case of he-got-the-bag-itis.
Loved when he was in Pittsburgh and even though I was sad to see him leave in 2008, I knew that they needed to acquire prospects or else he’d leave the next year and the Pirates would get nothing for him. Sadly they didn’t get any one very good. Brandon Moss was fine but that was several years after he left Pittsburgh. Andy LaRoche was the worst, just a bad fielding and no hitting 3B. I think people went nuts over his minor league stats without ever watching him actually play, bad fundamentals. Craig Hansen ended up having to retire due to brachial plexus neuropathy. I think he could have been a great reliever if not for the medial issues. Bryan Morris was just ok and the Pirates traded him for a first round competitive balance pick that they used to pick Connor Joe who is an interesting player.
