By the end of the deal, it 100% could be the worst one of all-time if he continues his antics. I put it as number 5 for now because I also wouldn’t be shocked if he puts up an all-star season or two in the remaining three years of the contract because the talent is still there

Ohtani 's contract only pays him $2 million a year for 10 years. Then the other $680 million is deferred payments. The Dodgers will make way more revenue by having Ohtani than what they are paying him. It's not a bad contract.

He definitely had a hall of fame career and everyone knew there would be a drop off, but I don’t think anyone expected the drop off to be as sudden and drastic as it was. He went from legend to barely above average overnight. No one could sustain the numbers he put up during his big run, no one expected that but holy shyt no one expected him to drop as much as he did. Tigers couldn’t let him go though cuz of what he did for us though. I’m just glad it’s over.

The major contributor to Davis' decline was MLB choosing to ban Adderall and not grant an exemption, despite him taking prescribed Adderall for years at that point. He switched to another drug, but any doctor will tell you that people won't necessarily react the same to different medications (I have a coworker with ulcer problems who has no issues with a name brand medication, but has awful digestive issues if he takes the generic).
Honestly I don't think he would have kept up his level of production regardless, but it was certainly a major factor.

Adderall was already banned -- Davis just had an exemption in previous years. It later came out he didn't apply for one in 2014. Maybe he thought he didn't need it anymore. It's never been explained why he didn't apply for one. The next year the league gave him an exemption for Vyvanse. So only he knows what was going on, really.

Rendon's contract has the potential to move up to number one when all is said and done. On a team where there should have been 3 superstars, there ended up being only 2 superstars and 1 massive albatross of a human being. To be fair though, the underlying drama behind all three of those bad Angels contracts (Hamilton, Rendon, and Pujols) clearly illustrates the executive dysfunction that plagues the current front office and will continue to do so until Arte either does some serious soul-searching or sells the team

Rendon is 100% the worst on the list. At least some of these other player posted amazing runs in their careers.
What is the upside you’d expect from Rendon? 25-30 HR and 80-100 RBIs for 2 or 3 seasons at the most? Again, at least the other guys on the list proved they can have multiple elite seasons for extended stretches. This guy has one good year and very good postseason run, and now he’s worth one of the richest contracts in MLB history? Only in Anaheim.
Sure, there’s always a chance he turns things around, but he’d have to finish out his contract with at least 3 straight seasons better than his best to even make it look like anything but a historic waste of money, time, and a roster spot.

Patrick Corbin deserves a mention, he signed a 6 year $140 million deal in 2019. He delivered in that year and was dominant in the WS, but then was the worst pitcher in baseball the next 3 years. -1.2 bWAR in 2021 and -2.5 in 2022 (as a pitcher!!!), and for reasons I cannot possibly fathom nor comprehend he was awarded 1.8 bWAR in the covid season despite showing a 2-7 record 4.66 ERA 1.57 WHIP and .308 OBA in 11 starts. As for the Rendon... my God that guy is such a clown having him on the team has just been bad and the money he's taking while being out is insane and frustrating for us fans.
Arte started as a reasonable owner to then only just cause his own downfall and fans want him out. Him not trying to sign Ohtani was the last straw for a lot of fans, but me personally I'm glad Ohtani got out. The angels need new owners and need to rebuild, right now everything is a mess but we do have good young talent that needs support and hopefully we can have a healthy year without freak accidents happening

    @peachjwp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Most Tiger fans adore Miggy. However his last 7 years totaled about 2 WAR, all for $240 million. His performance suddenly dropped off in his age 34 season and became a boat anchor for the team. He and his $30 million a year was a significant part of the reason the Tigers have had the most loses in MLB since 2015. People need to compare his last 7 years to another HOF great Al Kaline who was a plus contributor up until his final year. Miggy’s nickname should have been Coaster Cabrera.

Worst one I can think of is the Royals signing Mark Davis before the 1990 season. Coming off 3 great seasons in a row (and a Cy Young award as well) with the Padres and the last 2 as their closer, he took a nose dive straight into the tank. He had SEVEN saves with KC over 2 and a half years (6 of those in the first year of his contract) before being traded to Atlanta for Juan Berenguer. He hung around in the bigs a couple more years, and then was gone. If ever there was a guy who for all intents and purposes took the money and ran, it was Davis

Based on Japan Daily Sports, a economist and economics professor named宮本勝浩(Katsuhiro Miyamoto) from Kansai University, calculated and estimated Ohtani would create an economy of 50 billions JPY(about 354 millions in USD) in 2024 if he continue to stay in Angels, 64.3 billions JPY(about 455 millions USD) in Ohtani goes with Dodgers. If this is true, Ohtani could easily make that 700 millions USD back for Dodgers in just 2 years. 2024 he's not going to pitch, so by 2025 if he can still pitch, he can probably create another wave of mania, meaning it might bring more money to Dodgers potentially, and if all the calculations were correct, Ohtani is simply just a good investment for Dodgers, not only the cash is cycled but the value of this team is also going to go up because they had this legendary player in their team history, fans will look up to this teams, players will want to play for it, just like how Ohtani wants to play for Dodgers.
You should ask how much money Angels makes because of Ohtani in these 6 years, now he's 29, if he can still manage to pull it off another 6 years, he'll be 35, think how much he can make for Dodgers, the rest is just extra, and I believe it's easily over 1 billion USD in revenue, the entire Japan is crazy on him, include a good portion of Koreans and Taiwanese, then we also got the main purchase power in US fan base, I just can't imagine how one single guy can create a such hype and market, he's literally the chosen one in 100 years.

They either stay juiced or will fall off mid 30's then finally cave to the sauce...then all the sudden they're winning CY Young's at 38/39 signing massive contracts at 40.

MLB granting Chris Davis a ritalin exemption, only to suddenly revoke it with no explanation is an enormous part of what tanked his career.
Wayne Davis was just a journeyman barely making the teams in Texas he was on Ritalin and had an exemption, when is career started to blow up with the Orioles he still had his relent exemption, so it's not like the Ritalin was stimulating him in such a way as to help his gain as he struggled while on it as well.
Suddenly being paid an enormous amount of money in a long-term contract is exemption for the medication he's been taking for years and years as revoked. I believe it was reported that he had been taking it for anxiety, and can you imagine the anxiety of trying to live up to that contract when the medication you used for years and years is now taken from you?
