It's easier to meet people in a walkable place. A walk to run an errand turns into a chat with the neighbor sweeping or hanging laundry, kicking a ball back to children playing, or other random life experiences along the way. I think our cars separate us from all of those opportunities to connect and learn from each other. I also think small independent businesses as opposed to corporate mega stores are more conducive to being socially connected to a community. This all adds to a better quality of life.

As someone who lived in So. Florida (Ft. Lauderdale) and as someone who has lived widely around the globe, I can say I got a big smile on my face - just like you - once I was abroad and away from So. Florida. You look genuinely happy again. There is a certain edginess you develop living in a foreign country. I mean that in a good way; it's having a sense of and realizing the unexpected awaits and your not locked in on the Ground Hog Day sameness that you so often find Stateside. As always a really good video, and bonus for being so well balanced. You recognize that there can be challenges and you don't gloss over them. It sounds like you are very pleased with your choice. I will be in Portugal for the first time in May 2023, and I am considering whether Madeira is a destination for a relatively short trip (10 days). Seeing your videos inspires me to do something more with my life. I’ve lived in the US my entire life and watching you go out and explore different places makes me want to go explore places as well! Saving up money now so next year I can travel. Thanks for your videos and advice!
Really important that you mentioned 2ND hand smoke. Anyone sensitive to smoke needs to take this very seriously when considering moving here because SO many people smoke... everywhere in Europe, especially along the Mediterranean. Keep in mind that people smoke in their apartments and we're not used to that in the US and that smoke will seep into your apartment through the wall sockets and openings where pipes are. If you are very sensitive you will smell it inside your place. I am currently in Croatia with my air purifier on because of that very reason. Trying to find an Airbnb listed as non smoking is rare too. In my searches I found that the majority allowed smoking since most of the property owners smoke. People smoke on the beach here and throw their cigarette butts on the pebbles/sand. By the end of August there are so many cigarette butts littered on the beach you come home with them in your beach towel. Seriously. I was shocked. No respect at all for non smokers or the environment. I've actually had an uber driver show up smoking a cigarette in the car. I sent him right on without me. He was surprised I did not want to sit in the car while he smoked. Everytime I call an uber it is a 50/50 chance that that vehicle will smell like an ashtray. Anytime I find a driver with a car that doesn't smell like smoke I ask for their business card so I can call them directly the next time I need a ride. The mentality about smoking is bizarre...It is like they never got the memo about the dangers of 2nd hand smoke let alone that it is bad for them personally. People smoke around their kids, grandkids, put out cigarette butts on elevators...it is insane. I knew that people smoked over here but I never thought it would be this bad.
Geez, sounds like I made the right move to go to Spain. I hadnt checked it beforehand but smoking seems to be banned everywhere except outdoors. Havent had a single experience like that here. Sad!
I'm staying put since the state of my old joints precludes going for any long walks and yet listening to you is so interesting and so very enjoyable that it's become part of my routine. BTW, you're nothing like I imagined when curiosity first compelled me to check out one of your videos. 😊
This video is delightful! I grew up and lived in Dallas, Texas, for 67 years … then, a year ago, my husband Jorge and I moved to Querétaro, México, with our happy dog Buddy. We rent a lovely older home with a big back yard for Buddy - and even a pool. We are retired school teachers. Besides speaking Spanish, I speak Portuguese, having studied in Coimbra, Portugal, many years ago. I would love to visit Madeira! Greetings from Joseph Quillian (“Pepe” in Spanish and “Zé” in Portuguese. :-)
I'm glad you have been enjoying your first month in Portugal! It's great that all of the pros seem to have outweighed the cons. I feel that you made the right decision a month ago when you decided to go nomadic again!
Kristin, I really like the easy philosophic way you explain things. I might be the expat type, since I really hate long flights. If I go somewhere, it has to be for a reason and for a certain amount of time. My proven way to travel is by adapting to a foreign country and live there for a while my own local way. The unexpected often is the best remembered part. I flew to South Africa to finally see girafes in nature, but besides the great nature and many wildlife encounters, an unvoluntarily large part of the experience was, being part of a group of spoiled European youth travellers. The contrast between people and nature could not have been larger! My next travel was to Egypt and since there were not many tourists due to Covid, I became friend to an Egyptian horse cab driver, who showed me around for 2 weeks. There were so many unexpected encounters around every corner, so the famous old Egyptian graves and temples became a fading experience. I am another generation, since I grew up into world without internet, plus limited travel and communication. My first travel after the break of Berlin wall was to the US Forest Service in Alaska (and accidentally I have whitnessed the first days of the internet there). This was most exciting. I wanted to document the journey in detail, but my camera was not adapted to the wet weather conditions. Out of thousends of pictures, I got on expensive film, only 200 turned out to be good enought to show :). Todays technics are so much better! Not all my travels were completely voluntarily and many were connected with some means of survival. I guess that is the fact for most peoples travels on earth throughout history. Luckily my phases of travel, were backed by phases of secure stays in my home country, so there was always a base. I am glad, I was reunificated into a rich country, where returning never was a problem :). I think all the people, that are able to travel for fun and return to a safe haven if needed, should be very thankful. My fear is the growing struggle for resources in this world might set unexpected limits to free travel in the future - not for the very rich, but for ordinary people.
I'm both a nomad (currently in full nomad mode) and from a place that recently became a tourist city. First found the perspective refreshing. More than a travel blog. A couple of comments. I love collecting guitars and I love playing music. I'm literally on route in my.nomad travels to give guitars to a friend who had to quit teaching music during the pandemic. And it's been inspiring me to write. It allows me to dabble with equipment which I have friends that work for sound companies and are testing portable equipment for recording audio with me. Hoarding stuff has gotten in the way for me in the past of creating music... But this way I'm still able to dabble in my interest for musical things while still "paying it forward" (something I'll get to in a second) Being from a city which has had tourists it does impact the way the city's dynamics ebs and flows and seeing gentrification kick in + something reminiscent of people wanting a California part 2 can hollow out a city. I've seen it in my hometown and many other cities in my travels. In my travels it's very important to me to identify how I'm participating in a city. What type of guest am I being. A lot of places people go to enjoy but many of the places disparity in wages is huge. What's my footprint on that and I seem to keep asking myself how do I leave the place as good or better condition for the locals and for the next time I visit. I am trying to learn different languages and even participate in conversations. And I'm also providing people information about my experience in becoming a knowledge worker as a lot of folks got hit hard during the pandemic and might not have a career right now.
Hi Stephen, I’m glad that you resonated with the topics I mentioned. Glad you are able to dedicate time to writing and playing music. I’m also traveling with a keyboard and DJ equipment. It’s also important to integrate with the local community.

in 2007 i sold everything and moved to Europe. No bills, no house, no car(s). I'm mostly still living in this manner, I could never live in USA again. Fun to watch you do something similar and without fear.
Funny I felt like that when I moved from a mid-size busy city in the USA to a rural area. I felt like I could breathe and I still love where I live in the rural USA away from the maddening crowd. I don't need to live in a different country too much work and love my life in the rural USA. Miami is a zoo and doesn't represent the USA. Many smaller cities are lovely here and some are coastal areas. I own a boat and it's awesome. My ancestry is Portuguese and Portugal is great to visit but not for me.
You can do it! Hopefully you can start shifting to a more location-independent lifestyle! My book can help you take the first steps and give you ideas on passive income amzn.to/3JLLx5c
Great videos! Germany and France have smokers everywhere!! It does bother us, but we still love to visit those places. We had forgotten what it was like to smell smoke!!
Internet speeds were a nice surprise for me as well. This year I am nomading mostly around Spain and Portugal and my past internet experience in these countries has been slow and unreliable. This year however both countries have vastly improved - although Spain has done seemingly much better job.
We looked at Portugal, Spain and Italy this past year. By far Portugal was the best place but my wife speaks fluent Spanish and I have been learning Spanish. With that said we are focusing on the NLV for Spain but if that does not pan out Portugal moves to the top of the list. Personaly the food in Portugal may have better food, I'll say it here but not in spain.
If your wife speeks fluent spanish, no problem to came to Portugal, we portuguese understand very weel spanish language, so, she can speak spanish to us, and we will answer her in spanish as weel. The spaniards can'nt do thath in portuguese! You will be wellcome among us!
I fully admire and concur with your nomadic life again. I’m thinking I might do pet sitting in a luxury home as one way to cut the costs of room. I joined the group within International Living that helps people connect with people who frequently travel abroad and want someone to take care of the pets. I agree with you about the pro’s of a slower pace of life. I’m all for that.
Super helpful. I am playing with the decision of becoming an expat. Right now I have 2 dogs who have about another 5-7 years so just doing research. Love the candor here and especially working remotely and finding a place with good air conditioning or heating. I have “deep work” at 7am EST and I think living over at Europe would help get some work done but also having to stay online a bit longer.
Dear Kristin, I am a Belgian lady. Have done some backpacking in life and some traveling in general. Am not aware about USA, only been to New York City. Being European, being Belgian, yes some countries in Europe are cheap. Esp Portugal. Apart from that I dare to say that life has become pretty expensive down here. A quote I love a lot : doens’t the grass always look greener on the other ? I believe it’s awesome what you do and I admire you for that. But living abroad for a while doesn’t make anyone a local. All the best 🙏🌻
I've always wanted to do what you're doing---living in all kinds of different places for extended periods of time. In my mind, I always thought that 4-6 months in each location would be ideal, though I'm sure it depends on various immigration laws. Maybe that would be "semi-nomadic." Now that I'm older, work and family constraints make this impossible, and there's really no end in sight. So, enjoy while you can!

You should make a video on travel logistics. For instance, when you decided to move from the US to Portugal, where did you store your belongings? Did you sell most of them? Did you have a car? did you sell it? What about having pets? For many of us, the logistics of relocating is what makes us think twice about it!

I am going to Robotics school and then a one year apprenticeship...super excited. I see you are on Madera. I hope to visit soon...only I want to base myself in Porto I think. Much Love, Rich
I learned Brazilian Portuguese in college and it was messing with my Spanish so I didn't continue. I still remembered a lot and it helped in Portugal (other than foreign concepts like automatic transmissions)
With all of the positives, there are downsides to leaving the states and will not be for everyone. Cost for some is the deciding or almost required reason, but be cautious choosing a city/region to live based on cost only.
I love your videos, so professional, I learn of lot from you, you know, I'm not used to watch 20 minutes video, but yours really capture my attention, sorry my writing mistakes I'm not a english native speaker, and by the way, another plus from your channel is to practice my listening with your exquisite lenguage
Interesting to know; I've been looking at Portugal, and this gives some perspective. To pay it back: - 0:12 _kilometres_ is properly pronounced as if it rhymes with _nanometres_ or _micrometres,_ not with "thermometers" or "barometers" (because you'll notice, the former are all units of measurement, and the latter are all measuring devices). - 0:28 "and so" is redundant and grammatically incorrect. _So_ already means "and as a result", so just say that; you'll save a few words along the way. - 9:27 You mean to say "it's not that big of an _effect"._ _Impact_ means the force of a crash, which doesn't make sense here. - 16:40 Similarly, you mean it _affects_ your personal quality of life.
very informative. Based on what you've recommended, as someone planning to move to Portugal in the near future, I'll begin learning Portuguese right now.. and since I'm also a little sensitive to noise pollution, I'll be quite careful about where I rent. Coimbra and Braga are my current focus as potential cities to live. :)
We went on a trip to Braga last week, and unfortunately very wet - more annual rainfall than London; we live just south of Lisbon and are much happier with the weather, infrastructure and lifestyle. Been here for 14 months.

Enjoy your new life in Portugal and keep doing positive thnigs that help others take on the nomad life prepared for its challenges and its opportunities. Thanks!
Thank you, Guy! Appreciate your support 😊
You know I am a foodie and I hope you will touch on Portuguese wine and cuisine.
Thanks for leaving a comment Mike! I am truly happy now. Will add that to my list 😊
florida is disgustingly expensive. I paid 2k a month in Tampa for a box, zero br studio. In Miami I paid 2.7 and in the keys 3.1.. And the realitors are part of a new movement to squeeze every penny they can get out of renters. I have the money spend I do good, but I felt so dirty living in florida knowing I'm being taken advantage of
Love how locals are really taking care of their island. It's clean and well maintained.
Since stumbling onto your channel I've been mesmerized by your videos (and I've been watching a ton of travel destination vids), imagining my retirement and travel plans. I will have no limitations in any form when that day comes and yours have been thorough and very enjoyable. Thank you for making your videos easy to watch and understand for those of us who can only take a glimpse of other lands during breaks and lunches at work or seldom downtime at home. You definitely play a part in improving the quality of life some of us are working every day to try to attain and congrats on making the move to the Hawaii of Europe!!!
Im so happy for you, its fun watching your journey. Must be nice being able to blend in without being treated some type of way because of certain differences !!
Thank you, Taneshia; the people in Madeira are some of the nicest I’ve ever met
I moved from California over 6 years ago and am still loving it. I live in the south (the Algarve) and the beaches and warm weather are similar to CA but with the charm and culture of Portugal and ease of travel around Europe. Enjoy the lovely people and kind communities in the sweet towns.
That sounds like a fantastic move! 🏖️ It's great to hear you're enjoying the lovely people and charming communities. Thanks for sharing your positive experience, @AmericanInPortugal! 🇵🇹🌞😊
Hello
As always a really good video, and bonus for being so well balanced. You recognize that there can be challenges and you don't gloss over them. It sounds like you are very pleased with your choice. I will be in Portugal for the first time in May 2023, and I am considering whether Madeira is a destination for a relatively short trip (10 days). Glad that you are getting back into the groove of releasing videos on a more consistent basis. Stay safe. Cheers!
Thanks Robert! I appreciate the kind words. I am enjoying it! 💛 Go for it 😊 Keep safe!
Seeing your videos inspires me to do something more with my life. I’ve lived in the US my entire life and watching you go out and explore different places makes me want to go explore places as well! Saving up money now so next year I can travel. Thanks for your videos and advice!
I am glad that I am able to inspire you Johnathan! It's always my pleasure to share these videos! All the best to your journey 😊 🙏
Hi Kerry! Thanks you for sharing your insights on this 😊
😶
Geez, sounds like I made the right move to go to Spain. I hadnt checked it beforehand but smoking seems to be banned everywhere except outdoors. Havent had a single experience like that here. Sad!
@@cinziam457 Ahhhh, Mexico!
Spent 4 days in Madeira in October and absolutely loved it as part of a 2 week visit to Portugal. Can't wait to go back for a longer visit.
It’s a special place!
What were your favorite places in Portugal?
@getdealtwithquick We loved it all but particularly liked Madeira and Lisbon.
I'm staying put since the state of my old joints precludes going for any long walks and yet listening to you is so interesting and so very enjoyable that it's become part of my routine. BTW, you're nothing like I imagined when curiosity first compelled me to check out one of your videos. 😊
Hope your enjoying my videos, Jozsef! Thanks for watching 🙏
Hi Joseph! Thank you for leaving a comment and for sharing your experiences as well. Hope you could visit soon 😊 keep safe!
@3:38 right!!! The savings when you’re not in the consumer matrix is eye opening!
I'm glad you have been enjoying your first month in Portugal! It's great that all of the pros seem to have outweighed the cons. I feel that you made the right decision a month ago when you decided to go nomadic again!
Nice
Thank you! 💛
She is ripping us off and you're congratulating her??! Shame on you!
But this way I'm still able to dabble in my interest for musical things while still "paying it forward" (something I'll get to in a second)
Being from a city which has had tourists it does impact the way the city's dynamics ebs and flows and seeing gentrification kick in + something reminiscent of people wanting a California part 2 can hollow out a city.
@@TravelingwithKristin I once had a hand percussionist whomwas from el Salvador I didn't speak Spanish and he know "yes", "no", and "very good music". Enjoy as much as you can. Cheers!
P.s. do you know of any nomadic electronic music social media communities / sites? I just set my friend in Colombia up with a ableton setup last night.

Excellent video! I'm in the Republic of Georgia right now and I feel the same way about foreigners not speaking Georgian and the prices being driven up, but yes, we do add to the local economy. :)

@@TravelingwithKristin You're welcome. Take in a piece of that undiscovered country and please keep up the great work. We all appreciate you so much!
in 2007 i sold everything and moved to Europe.
Thanks for making life of my people harder and harder days after days tones of portuguese cannot afford life in their own country

Great videos! Germany and France have smokers everywhere!! It does bother us, but we still love to visit those places. We had forgotten what it was like to smell smoke!!
Thank you! I know it’s really a tough adjustment 😕
Hello
Internet speeds were a nice surprise for me as well. This year I am nomading mostly around Spain and Portugal and my past internet experience in these countries has been slow and unreliable. This year however both countries have vastly improved - although Spain has done seemingly much better job.
Indeed! Enjoy nomading, Gundars! Keep safe 🙏
Glad to know you resonated with me Kerry! Thanks for sharing your thoughts as well 😊

Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences, Christel! All the best to you as well. 💛😊

I enjoy your information. Thank you for being you.
Thank you so much 🥹🥹
I've always wanted to do what you're doing---living in all kinds of different places for extended periods of time.

With all of the positives, there are downsides to leaving the states and will not be for everyone. Cost for some is the deciding or almost required reason, but be cautious choosing a city/region to live based on cost only.

Interesting to know; I've been looking at Portugal, and this gives some perspective. To pay it back:
- 0:12 _kilometres_ is properly pronounced as if it rhymes with _nanometres_ or _micrometres,_ not with "thermometers" or "barometers" (because you'll notice, the former are all units of measurement, and the latter are all measuring devices).
- 16:40 Similarly, you mean it _affects_ your personal quality of life.
please, I’m trying to gate-keep Portugal 😹♥️🇵🇹 it’s so beautiful, great video 🫶🏻
