I think he's thinking of all the fingerprints and road dust on the black trim panels and the quilted bit inside the hood. They probably even wiped down the aluminum and chrome before they started filming and Leno was just still feeling nervous about it. I would be willing to bet that he wants to steam the guts and detail everything under the hood whenever he shows a car just because the guy seems so passionate about the collection and cars in general. Still, I think we all know they wouldn't be out of place at any car show. Hell, some of the stuff that putts down the road at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit some years is 75% rust and 25% grime

Thanks Jay, I remember seeing my first Monteverdi, I was 14 years old sneaking a look of my dads new issue of Playboy (1975) where they did a feature of european exotics. A beautiful side shot of the Monteverdi, 512 BB & a Lancia Stratos was burnt into my memory forever. Although I didn't remember a single girl in the issue I remembered every single car the featured. Thats when I realized I was truly a car guy.

Thanks for keeping it real Jay.

After all is said and done, I love this car. All of what Jay says hits home and my other favorite is Tim Allen's "COPO" Camaro. Balance, purpose, beauty, and reliable function are all key.
Almost a dream experience would be to "be" in the garage and feel what guys in the day felt at the time. Growing up in the 70s, later had a '74 Z-28 with a bored 402 from a Chevelle SS and a Hurst 4-speed that had a mismatched flywheel and shook itself to pieces but it was fast and loud... I was young.
Graduated to a couple of 5.0 Mustangs that were fast in the day. My favorite was a '91 Notchback for 11k off the floor. Went to Formula 350s and hopped them with SLP as the handling was and is still great with WS6.
My '05 GTO was the most underrated, understated. At 400hp with the tricky 6 speed, it sounded awesome, had torque to spare, got great mileage on the highway, was comfortable, and reliable. A true sleeper.
Jay, you are a true Vehicle Philosopher Supreme. My heroes have expanded beyond George Patton and Carroll Shelby to include you.
My late Dad had a collection of Kodachrome slides from car shows from the 50s when the cars were only 20-30 years old. I cherish them. Preserving history guarantees the feeling never dies. To VHP!!! May you live long and happy.

I always loved the Monteverdi, from the first time I remember seeing one in Classic and Sportscar magazine, here in England, when I was a kid. I thought they looked fantastic, and with that big Chrysler lump up front, (I've always been a big fan of American muscle cars too), what's not to Love. Like Jay said, you were getting all the advantages of a big torque, big hp and reliable American V8, but with handling and comfort of a European GT. I also remember you could pick up a good usable example for £10-15K back then too. Oh, how times have changed. It's crazy to see the prices of a lot of these type of cars now, which, until a few years ago, were still accessable to the average person. It seems that a lot of Jay's cars were bought many years ago, and what an investment. I know his collection is purely about the love of machinery and driving/riding and not about profit, but I'd love to know how much it's worth now, compared to when purchased. His McLaren F1, and the Miura he got for free, although it had a seized engine, are just two examples, which are now worth an insane amount of money, compared, to say, a couple of decades ago.

The funny thing is that I was lucky enough to see many of the well known super exotics of the day up close at dealerships in suburban Philadelphia. But I never saw a Monteverdi, and I always wished I had. It's really nice to see such a pristine example on the road. It’s a plausible story imo, but we don’t know what exactly happened, if anything at all. Lamborghini’s origins are murky.
I’ve read that Bob Wallace, Lamborghini’s test driver, said it never happened, and that Lamborghini thought he could make money from this venture.
