This is the best video I have seen covering all the stages of preparation and paver laying. No nonsense and clear logical instructions interspersed with a touch of humour !! Weel done.
Peter puts his beer down @14:13. When we cut back to the empty chairs @14:23 the beer's gone! Seriously though, entertaining and informative video that I wish I'd seen before I laid a patio with concrete slabs years ago.
great video never thought of all those little details that make the work of leveling stuff and having the edge stones not collapsing with the sand. Definitely uses a little cement based mixture on the side of any patio/walk way if i ever do this type of stuff.
(**A note on the edge pavers**)That "haunching" will only support the edges if the pad is as it's shown; which is an entry or landing pad outside the door or any area with very light traffic. If you're installing pavers where there will be heavy traffic, you would have to install either metal edge bars or at least 6" thick concrete (not mortar) edge to keep the pavers from coming apart at the edge. Great video.
Thank you guys for posting such a great video with so much detail! I used all methods mentioned in this video and I have a great looking landing that is 20 square metres at the back of my house!
Quick question - after haunching you said to wait two days before compacting. Wouldn't the plate compaction drive the pavers lower into the sand breaking the haunching? I'm completing my project soon and trying to figure out these last steps. I appreciate any advice!
Can we mix jointing sand with dry cement to fill the gaps then wet it after? Second question: I've seen builders mix cement and jointing sand and spread it all over the flat bed of sharp sand, put the slabs down, then wet the slabs for a few minutes. What do you reckon? Is it a good idea?
Painting and decorating is simple ? Hmm , I’ve corrected some appalling paint jobs over the years. Some people have no idea how to prep surfaces to achieve a quality looking and durable finish.
looked good, lots of great info. for me, not sure i would plate compact on top of jointing sand makes me nervous i will leave a stain mess.. guess it better be darn dry! also the haunch is good for those small pavers but i'm using much larger 14" square, 3" thick so best i beef up the haunch more.
Hi, Thanks for video. May I ask you I have prepared my base with road base and compacted it well. Does it have to be 100 % level. It has few high and low spots at few places that I am not able to rectify to 100 %. Would adding pavers sand on next step not fix these few spots. As I am doing 2cm thick sandstone pavers installation how much would you recommend that pavers sand should be poured in. I was thinking 2-3 cm. Please share. Thank You !
Unless it's parmeable paving it could be laid level. But yeh high point near the house and chase height round the house level 150mm bellow FFL OR VENT height to stop dampness. Set your runs on a turn of the bubble away from house. If It has to run in towards the house for any reason put in a gravel strip or if it's a big area that could shed loads of water then put in acco channels. They videos are all bollocks. Correcting lines that run off??? Set 2 lines up and set them square and lay up and out along the lines checking them every now and then. Blocks should be laid tight to keep the bond strong.
Wanting to pave a small enclosed backyard. House entrance is facing east, out in the yard there are two walls on the east and south, a retaining wall on the north, how would you set the slop to direct the water away from the house? Thanks
I assume a "whacker" is a compactor? If so, how do you attach a piece of carpet onto a plate compactor? Which side of the carpeting should be making contact with the pavers?
Not sure how flex pipe works for screed rails lol. I’d HIGHLY RECOMMEND using galvanized 1” pipe for this part. Plus, without a containment border the sub grade will just fall out from under the pavers.
Because they are working off the string line which is their finished height ,gave it 30mm fall but still 65mm below the string line which is their finished height
Peter if u read this message can u please come to my house and help me with my pavers in my mums garden?? Its a very awkward landscape and I've got everything i need but I cant progress any further and I'm trying to complete it so my mum can see it before she....I live in south auckland
Fuck the standards on Sheep Island are pretty low. That paving will sink into the stormwater or sewer pipe trench after the first heavy rain. The smarter countries use concrete under the paving, quicker and easier. Then compact sand. Use 25x25 aluminium rails to screed off or screed using profiles like a concretor. Pre cut your halves and use straight away. Use dumpy or laser level to set heights quickly and accurately. 6/10 for the sheep shagger.
6:00 - Not sure why your comment isn't a link to the direct spot in the video so just adding it again to save myself (and others) having to find it. Thanks for sharing originally!
Dont use plastic pipe or any pipe use 3mm thick by 30mm wide flat bar and use your screed bar and level to get lines in first then sit strips on top less work and quicker
Is there any one who can suggest me what all things to be kept in mind when constructing a tank. the tank will contain corrosive liquid and it need to be liquid leak as well as gas leak proof. Please suggest me some.
Sorry to say it No professional paves a job like this Fair enough, some of the basics he explains are true but it’s a slow way to do it I would have that area paved in half the time with the same outcome You don’t need to string line out the whole job if it’s a small patio Also his tip to wet the sand on the side so the sand doesn’t come out underneath is silly as you want to go under the paver with the cement to make it stronger. Metal screed straps not pipe. Compactors of that size compact to a depth of 150/200mm so you just put all your material in and compact on top of both the sub base and screeding sand. I seriously doubt he does it for a living.
Amazing how difficult it is for me (being American) to even comprehend and absorb the technical details of this job with all the metric measurements...
+Billy the Kid Yes. Using between 3/8 & 7/16" is a lot easier and more accurate than just writing 10mm in a design plan. Go home America..you're drunk. Seriously the metric system is probably used in all large scale American manufacturing, scientific or design companies so why don't you all just use the goddamn superior metric system?
how do you think we feel when we watch american content and they use measurements in inches instead of what we are taught in schools here....metric, i have no problem watching american made youtube vids..i understand they dont use metrics and im fine with it i still watch, its like "when in Rome....do as the Romans" but "when in New Zealand...its metrics" Lol
Best video on TH-cam for paver installation.
The attention to detail is truly appreciated.
Finally, a paver installation video that makes sense, and doesn't gloss over how to level the base material. Good job.
They glossed over how to compact the corners though.
@@bravo2966 Also what happens if after compacting it doesn’t go the 10mm that you thought it would
This is the best video I have seen covering all the stages of preparation and paver laying. No nonsense and clear logical instructions interspersed with a touch of humour !! Weel done.
Except that some of it is illogical lol
Old videos like these still explain it better
Hands down the best video on youtube for pavers. Of all the videos this one shows the importance and how to of grading a base. Thanks!

I noticed that too haha!! Great video overall though :-)
Bernhard Hofmann has the
That was a really good instruction video and will save it and use it when I do paving. What on earth would I do without TH-cam lol
Finally found a video that shows how to lay the screen bars...... best subject video on the tube...
By far the best video I’ve seen for pavers. Thank you

Order in Chaos yep I’m in cold climates that concrete will just crack and ruin the job . I always use edging instead

aaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhh
nice job. I will recommend your video to my customers.
we are a paving block machine manufacturer company located in Turkey.
Peter is a nice guy and a professional! Good job!!
Not all correct but in general not bad. Probably the best one on youtube so far.
Very professional men who know what they're talking about.
Very informative clear and precise demonstration. Much appreciated. Thank you😷

Well Thanks to you. Added a new skill. Very well articulated.
excellent and done with humour......great job
Nice job guys. One suggestion - don't use plastic pipe. 3/4 to 1" Steel electrical conduit works great and does not flex.
Painting and decorating is simple ? Hmm , I’ve corrected some appalling paint jobs over the years. Some people have no idea how to prep surfaces to achieve a quality looking and durable finish.

Aren't you supposed to lay the pavers at a slight off level away from the house for correct water shedding direction?
GeneralMartinus 1in ever 6ft I heard.
GeneralMartinus 10mm per 1m as per 4:20 in vid
+GeneralMartinus 1 inch every 8ft? 1/8th inch every foot
Some people just don't listen.

top job fella,s thank you from down under.

Wanting to pave a small enclosed backyard. House entrance is facing east, out in the yard there are two walls on the east and south, a retaining wall on the north, how would you set the slop to direct the water away from the house? Thanks
You could slope it towards the retaining wall, there should be drainage installed. Or permeable pavings.
I assume a "whacker" is a compactor? If so, how do you attach a piece of carpet onto a plate compactor? Which side of the carpeting should be making contact with the pavers?

One question... How can you have 65 mm at both ends if you dropped by 30 mm (pitch) at the front end?
Because they are working off the string line which is their finished height ,gave it 30mm fall but still 65mm below the string line which is their finished height

amazingggggg ! good job guys !
Good vid, but I wouldn't use pvc pipe for screed rails they flex, use steel, and attach carpet to the wacker when going over the pavers.
great video. will check the site soon :D

A 2.5m long screed with a spirit level in it will save you time and strings... Only string you need is the one to keep pavers strait.
How come your driving on the wrong side of the car?
just made you 1000 likes ....good video wish you would have said inches too i mean your are using a american tape...everything on point ....
You don't bother compacting the sand?

or you can just pour concrete 1 base no sinking or settling
Najlepsze jest zagęszczanie nawierzchni dosyć że bez gumy to jeszcze po warstwie piachu (fugi:P)
Now thats professional
your sub base must have six inches of misto, in top that no less of three inches of sand ,i like your operation.
You're recording a video. Why would you be worried about wanting to write anything down?
Great!
Why didn't you wack the sand too?
The acting is excruciating, but the advice is solid
how come use didn't compact your screed bed before you screeded it, usealy a hand fload is good eneough to do it
great ................
Sorry to say it
