  • In today's vlog I tell you about how I lesson plan. Lesson planning is an important part of the job and can be a cause of a lot of stress for teachers new and veteran alike. I explain my process I go through when I do my lesson plans.
Hello, I'm Mr. Thain. I am a Kindergarten teacher who just found a love for making videos and vlogging. Welcome to my daily vlog. I hope you enjoy getting to see what my life is like and welcome you into my youtube family.

I teach high school on a rotating block schedule (see the students every other day for 85-90 minutes). I always incorporate a section in my plans for reteaching if I notice students aren't getting a concept. This might occur on the same day or might be a backup plan after an assessment, or I may use it for students that need to come in for tutoring. I also agree with @sergio gil-billoups - it's great to find other male teacher vloggers/TH-camrs.

Yeah! It happens to me all the time. It's so tedious to sit and do my lesson plans. I have tried classical music to help me concentrate, but it hasn't worked for me. It makes me super sleepy. In my school we have to plan weekly and submit them by email to the administration. I hardly ever stick to them because its hard to guess how much time will it take students to meet your lesson plan objectives.
Could you make a video on on how to deal with difficult parents at Parent Teacher Conferences?

Thanks for the idea. I will do a teaching tip on effective parent communication and focus specifically on parent teacher conferences.

Charlene Bautista give an example and maybe I can help you out. I find that it is all situational, and so to know how to better handle it I would have to know the circumstance. It's all about your approach. Believe me we have a lot of demanding parents at my school, so I have gotten a little more clever each year #beassertiveandhaveproof

      Kate The Sleepy Teacher
      Hello Kate!
I want know how to better prepare myself for parent teacher conferences in general. As a new teacher, I have messed up here and there a couple of times. Unfortunately, I don't have a mentor teacher to guide me through my first year like other new teachers do. Neither have received the adequate support or guidance from the administration. It has been very challenging, overwhelming and intimidating dealing with angry parents and their consistent complaints. All I know so far have learned along the way... Believe me Kate meetings with parents have been a nightmare.

I'm so sorry to hear you are going through that.... I started my career working every job under the sun, but I come from a long line of teachers so a lot of it comes naturally to me. I never had a mentor teacher either. I started ftt in Costa Rica with just a chalkboard, lol. Then when I came back to California I had 38 fifth graders in a bungalow with no windows and an air conditioner that broke all the time. You learn to get pretty creative when having to teach under a tree outside because your bungalow is 100 degrees.
On to what you are probably more interested in, lol. I have some resources you can access - all currently free. My you tube, tpt, and Instagram all have my same handle. I I would suggest you go to my tpt store and download my sst /iep form for free. I will do a video on it soon. It is an awesome resource to have. It is a lot of work to keep on top of it all, but having assessments and proof is very important. You need to remember that parents are protective bears of their cubs. I have some other great resources on my you tube about classroom management and organization, you just have to look at the right play list. I'll have more videos coming soon.
My best piece of advice is telling parents throughout the year how their child is doing. Don't wait till conferences, keep the lines of communication open from day 1. Really pay attention to the students progress. Set goals for each student and acknowledge their strength wether it be via a card or a email or in person. Sometimes I set my own goals for each kid and sometimes I set two goals (my own, and one my student and I set together). When you do this, then you can use it to remind the kid they made you a promise/ set a goal. They want to do well for you, even the ones that seem challenging. It seriously works . Keep track of who youve praised, make sure to get to all students at least once. I have 50 third graders and I get to all kids at least once, so it can be done. Parents go through the roof when you send a genuine note of gratitude / acknowledgement about their child.
When you tell parents throughout the year how their child is doing, it makes conference time less about behavior and more about academics. Have loads of assessments and examples and focus mostly the conference on this. Be prepared to provide support ideas, and or proof on how you are differentiating for their child. Listen without getting offended or argumentative. They might towards you, but don't reciprocate. Some parents can smell fear or "weakness" and if they think there is an opportunity to railroad, they will. Continue to redirect if you must. Always come back to what their child is doing right and continue to highlight their strengths. When you do this then they are a lot more open to hearing criticism/ areas of improvement . If you wait until a parent teacher conference, a big portion of the year has passed and parents understandably get upset that you waited so long. "If it was really a problem, why am I just hearing about it now?" Etc. Youreally have to play offense. When a parent is upset, listen to them. If you are having behavioral problems, ask the parents what works for them at home. Play up that you are a team. Remind them that parents and teachers that aren't on the same team have a student in the middle playing both sides. If you know it will be an extremely tense meeting request admin is there for support. Keep them in the loop so they understand your request. It may be that admin is not supportive and it may be that admin doesn't understand the severity of your needs for that particular situation / family. If your admin is not supportive then you need to explain why they should be at the conference - but don't be too demanding because you don't want to get a mark on yourself (it is a real fine line).
Okay I know that was long, but trying to write it all out here is really hard. I hope this made sense and helps you in the future. You can do it. Teaching is insanely hard!!!!
