Thank you for this video and thank you for not disclosing the location. When I graduated from high school in the early 90s I got a job delivering exploratory drilling supplies in northern NV. My job was to drive out to remote drill sites all throughout the state. This was pre-GPS or cell phone, and many of the location were down dirt roads, as much many miles from pavement. I got to travel down lots of those endless dirt roads in NV. A great experience. Lots of times it was just a pickup full of gear in a (then) brand new company 4x4 Dodge Cummins Diesel pickup, which in 1991 was quite a sexy ride. Best job I've ever had.
Thanks for leaving the location of the 2nd spot out. Easy enough to find for those that care. I've been in probably a dozen interesting caves in the area. There's another well known one with a similar story about the guano miners at Lovelock. A miner went into town and said "it would be easier to dig if it wasn't for all the Indian junk", which alerted an archaeologist. The Humboldt Museum in Winnemucca has some of the artifacts from Lovelock Cave, including a couple of the duck decoys. It's worth stopping in for anyone in the area. At one time they had the bones of one of the "giants" (the size has been exaggerated), before they were repatriated per NAGPRA
Those rock formations in the second cave were amazing!! They looked like dragon scales. I half expected them to start moving and Smaug suddenly appear and grab you in his big dragon-scaled clutches! 🐲
Epic trip, for sure! Between the incredible river with the salmon and bears, the massive glacier, to the Icefields Parkway and then ending with such an amazing geological wonder, it was awesome to live vicariously through you! The Icefields Parkway is truly my favorite place I've been in North America, and you barely scratched the surface there. I'm sure you'll return and I look forward to your future visit. I always love tuning in and seeing what great adventure you're undertaking every week. Keep up the great work, Tristan!

Tufa cave is ...crazy! I spent almost 5 weeks exploring Nevada and wasn't even aware of it! Plan on revisiting Nevada, you know, being so empty, barren and lifeless.😉. November full moon in Nevada....night sky can fill the Soul...whew. Sometimes those blue lines on maps actually have water, too. 🤣 Thanks for bringing us, me, along on such an amazing Adventure, Tristan! Top shelf presentation!
Well done Tristan. Back in 1974 on my honeymoon we left the wedding reception and spent six weeks living in a van traveling from New York to Oregon. We drove over six thousand miles zigzagging across the country looking for a spot to call home. After a couple months living in Aloha, Oregon we began three years of saving and planning another six week odyssey that ended with us moving to Jackson Wyoming. It was a great place to live for almost forty years. Now I can still see the Tetons on a clear day from eastern Idaho where life is a further away from the crowds. I look forward to seeing your next adventures.
What a magnificent trip you took, Tristan! Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride. That second cave was one of the most unusual ones I've ever seen. I know you're a peak bagger but I'm a wild caver, LOL! I do lava tubes around Mt. Adams & Mt. St. Helens in Washington State but I'll have to put this tufa cave on my bucket list for sure. I found it and The Tombstone on Google Maps so they don't look too difficult to find. Sure is a lot of mining going on in that area! 😅
The great thing about exploring Nevada is that it is 86% federal land so you can go almost anywhere you want. And also, Nevada has the most mountain ranges. The high desert is a beautiful place.
As a Minnesotan who used to live in Northern Nevada, I loved to see the area again through your eyes. Would be awesome to see more of NV on the channel. Thanks for this! 🤍
Tristan, this was such an informative & fun trip you documented for us. In this video loved the scale-like rocks at the cave & very old rock art. Learned something new about the concrete direction arrows for pilots. So interesting to follow your channel because it is a learning experience for those of us who love anthropology & history. Wow, so after all these years you finally made it to Lovelock Cave, definitely cool to see! It's been on my bucket list for years along with the petroglyphs at Winnemucca Lake, the latter being the oldest documented rock art in North America so far. Hopefully I'll get to explore those places for myself soon.
Those tufa deposits you display at 8:48 are all over the area south of Lovelock, just south of Fallon (about 8 miles and to the right as you head further south on the main road) at the turnoff with a sign for the racetrack. You will also see these at the state park about six miles due east of Fallon headed towards Austin (you need to take a good dirt side road that heads west once inside the park, and then walk a trail when you get to the trailhead parking lot). But these are all ancient deposit remnants from Lake Lahontan.
@@SUVRVing Put my name aside. When you go back to that area, I will give you exact directions and a real description of what you will see. There is an incredible amount of things to see in the Fallon area.
I grew up in Sparks, these caves are not hard to find, as he said, there are enough clues in the video, it took me less than two minutes to find it on Google.🤷🏽♂️
Nice trip. Really like the Northern Nevada area with all the mountain ranges and the expansive views. The arrows on the ground built for aircraft of the era were interesting to see. Good evidence of an evolving culture. When they were built, the people had no idea of how useless they would be in the not too distant future. You can be sure we do many things today that will be like that.

My father was born and raised in Fallon, Nevada and I know that area well. His grandfather lived in Rochester, Nv during the early 1900's and was a carpenter at the Rochester Gold Mine. Back in 2018 my brother, our friend and I drove across the Humbolt Range from Lovelock to Unionville where Mark Twain lived at in 1861. We also drove to the remote towns of Midas and Tuscarora, Nevada. Really enjoyed your video Tristan.
I think the first cave might have inspired a prominent location I the book “The Devil Colony” by James Rollins. Also, the futa formations look like upside down coral. Love how nature repeats itself in these most beautiful ways.
The story goes this way the Indians were tired of being used as a food source. So when the Giants went to Lovelock to bed down for the night in this cave the Indians stacked wood around the opening of the cave & lit the cave on fire. Archers on the outside to prevent any Giants from leaving.
What an amazing trip! You do such a good job of describing where you are and what you find interesting. I am glad you keep some places obscured. The people who put in the effort to find these places are hopefully the same people who will appreciate and respect the site.
I've never seen rock formations like that- so unique! I've even been to Tuffa canyon at big bend. It has alot of various rock inclusions, but no formations like that. Maybe all eroded by canyon floods

Lots of information here. I live just outside Fernly. Some of us call at Fern Tucky. I have hiked around Wadsworth area. But love luck is about 100 mile drive for me. This video really inspires me to travel east with my faithful companion Scout.
Wow, that tufa cave certainly ranks very high on my 'what-the-heck!' list; I've seen the tufa formations at Mono Lake, but these seem almost to defy logic. Wow! :-)
Thanks for this video. It so much reminds me of a part of my life in that area. In 2005, I worked as a carpenter constructing concrete forms for a microscopic gold mine near Battle Mountain, NV. They called it the "Phoenix Project". It was quite interesting and looked exactly like the mine you presented. That whole area is quite beautiful in a weird sort of way. Only place you see trees is creek beds that may have water at certain times of the year. But the rock formations have beautiful, earthy colors.

This adventure was so amazing. I sat there with my mouth hanging open- always love your editing and the drone shots. The history of the area is incredible, and you have so much to impart. I am here for it all- even the notes about your snacks or meals I love to see. Those rock formations are mind-blowing. The petroglyphs are so cool. I especially enjoy multiple stops in a day. Those tufas and petroglyphs at site #2 are really cool! I have a video production question. I just got into recording hikelapse and drivelapse videos this past year, and I've struggled a lot with color processing in the harsh light we tend to get in the western US. Your color grading always looks great! Are there any resources you'd recommend for learning color grading?
Wonderfully presented adventure video. I live in this region and know most of the places you visited but the "tufa cave" is an unknown to me but searching. Don't worry we are respectful of the desert and ancient sites. Thanks, enjoyed tagging along and in my younger days have done road trips like yours.
Tristan, you are why I was able to jump in my car and do the Lewis and Clark trail (started just north of Omaha) last couple years. Took a month each year. I was listening to the last few minutes of this video and said, yep it's all his fault. Thanks for letting me get new ideas for my bucket list.
I had to stop at 13:40. Tristan, that rock formation, The Tombstone, looks like a small version of Seneca Rocks in West Virginia. It's a popular climbing area in the east. It's two limestone fins like that, but each one is 300 feet tall. You'd love climbing there,I'm sure.

about red hair, last week I heard on other mummies with red hair, that coloured hair over time can decays to a red colour. So as such it might be the actual hair colour during life, there is a good chance that hair colour was not red. One example there many Egyptian mummies that now appear to have red hair where genetic testing shows their hair was not red during life. First time here, I love your video. Subscribed! Great video, as usual! I unexpectedly discovered tufa at one of my bucket list places - Mono Lake, California. The reason it was on my bucket list is that one of my favorite movies was filmed there. I learned that the tufa wasn’t visible in the movie because the lake level was quite a bit higher in the mid 70’s. Check out Clint Eastwood’s “High Plains Drifter.” If you decide to go to Mono Lake, let me know. I’ll tell you how to get to the spot where the movie was filmed. There are still artifacts and debris from the set.
Some think that the red headed giants were vikings, but what sets them apart from the vikings was apparently their two rows of teeth and six fingers. One might think that could be just all stories, until you realize there are still people born to this day with six fingers. Maybe the double rows of teeth was a mutation, maybe it was due to inbreeding, who knows...
Great video Tristan, what I've seen of Nevada is fantastic. We were passing through that area last June. It was really too hot to hike around however. I thought you were going to say it was a Lithium mine. What "chemicals" are used to extract the precious metals? That sounds like a creepy way of doing things. The all mighty dollar speaks again. Loved the way you showed the narrow angle of the "Tombstone" wall. And that cave was unique and unusual for sure. Thanks from a 70 years young woman...

Nevada is so full of obscure interesting places. Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park is a five star visit. Especially if you visit off Season.

Its outside of Lovelock , NV which is on I-80. Anyone can visit. No monies needed. But a steep climb to this cave. Buses come here with tourists.

Lots of information here. I live just outside Fernly. Some of us call at Fern Tucky. I have hiked around Wadsworth area. But love luck is about 100 mile drive for me. This video really inspires me to travel east with my faithful companion Scout.

Wow, that tufa cave certainly ranks very high on my 'what-the-heck!' list; I've seen the tufa formations at Mono Lake, but these seem almost to defy logic. Wow! :-)
Thanks for this video. It so much reminds me of a part of my life in that area. In 2005, I worked as a carpenter constructing concrete forms for a microscopic gold mine near Battle Mountain, NV. They called it the "Phoenix Project". It was quite interesting and looked exactly like the mine you presented. That whole area is quite beautiful in a weird sort of way. Only place you see trees is creek beds that may have water at certain times of the year. But the rock formations have beautiful, earthy colors.

This adventure was so amazing. I sat there with my mouth hanging open- always love your editing and the drone shots. The history of the area is incredible, and you have so much to impart. I am here for it all- even the notes about your snacks or meals I love to see. Those rock formations are mind-blowing. The petroglyphs are so cool. I especially enjoy multiple stops in a day. So much fun! And- what? 32 days long did you say? Cassie and Bowser must be chomping at the bit for your return! Safe travels to Mom's and then home!

I have a video production question. I just got into recording hikelapse and drivelapse videos this past year, and I've struggled a lot with color processing in the harsh light we tend to get in the western US. Your color grading always looks great! Are there any resources you'd recommend for learning color grading?

Wonderfully presented adventure video. I live in this region and know most of the places you visited but the "tufa cave" is an unknown to me but searching. Don't worry we are respectful of the desert and ancient sites. Thanks, enjoyed tagging along and in my younger days have done road trips like yours.
The other place we saw Tufas was Mono Lake in CA.
Tristan, you are why I was able to jump in my car and do the Lewis and Clark trail (started just north of Omaha) last couple years. Took a month each year. I was listening to the last few minutes of this video and said, yep it's all his fault. Thanks for letting me get new ideas for my bucket list.

Tristan, that rock formation, The Tombstone, looks like a small version of Seneca Rocks in West Virginia.
It's a popular climbing area in the east.
It's two limestone fins like that, but each one is 300 feet tall.
You'd love climbing there,I'm sure.

about red hair, last week I heard on other mummies with red hair, that coloured hair over time can decays to a red colour. So as such it might be the actual hair colour during life, there is a good chance that hair colour was not red. One example there many Egyptian mummies that now appear to have red hair where genetic testing shows their hair was not red during life.

Great video, as usual! I unexpectedly discovered tufa at one of my bucket list places - Mono Lake, California. The reason it was on my bucket list is that one of my favorite movies was filmed there. I learned that the tufa wasn’t visible in the movie because the lake level was quite a bit higher in the mid 70’s. Check out Clint Eastwood’s “High Plains Drifter.” If you decide to go to Mono Lake, let me know. I’ll tell you how to get to the spot where the movie was filmed. There are still artifacts and debris from the set.

Some think that the red headed giants were vikings, but what sets them apart from the vikings was apparently their two rows of teeth and six fingers. One might think that could be just all stories, until you realize there are still people born to this day with six fingers. Maybe the double rows of teeth was a mutation, maybe it was due to inbreeding, who knows...
Great video Tristan, what I've seen of Nevada is fantastic. We were passing through that area last June. It was really too hot to hike around however.
