Starlink in South Africa - will it work for overlanding? READ DESCRIPTION FOR LATEST UPDATES

  • It looks like Starlink has now decided that roaming will not be allowed in countries that do not have the service available (most of Africa currently), and that you will need to return to the country where the Starlink is registered every 2 months. More information here: mybroadband.co.za/news/broadb...
    Since we made this video, Starlink has changed their terms of service. Now you can't transfer ownership until 90 days after activation or 120 days after purchase (whichever comes sooner). This is not an issue if you purchase the kit in Africa and have a subscription in the country where it was purchased. But if you purchase overseas, as we did, then you need to transfer the kit to yourself and this will not be possible for 90-120 days. Your options in this case are to wait until you are able to transfer, or you can change your plan in the purchase country to the Mobile Global plan and use the Starlink on this plan for the first 3 months. Unfortunately this is quite expensive. In Australia the Global plan costs 300AUD per month.
    I think the best bet at present is to purchase in Nigeria, Eswatini, Zambia, Mozambique or another African country. But check pricing, it varies quite widely. We initially tried to purchase the kit in Zambia, but they required a Zambian proof of identity.
    I show how to import and set up #starlink in South #Africa and test it in motion on the roof rack of a 4x4. I also discuss flat mount options and 12V conversion for RV and #overlanding use, as well as the new gen 3 flat mount Starlink dish. Once we are done with the boring stuff Andy comes round and we drive up the mountain in Barry to test the system. We strap it to the roof rack of the 4x4 and drive around for a while to test how well it works in motion and on rough gravel roads.

      That's only when you wanna transfer the account. Not for first time activation.
      Buy a kit in Australia. Don't activate in Australia. Just activate in Zambia. But you will just lose the 80 dollars first month subscription

    Can’t wait for the last quiet remote places on earth to FINALLY be brought to life with the symphony of cellphone ringtones, loud one sided conversations, and kids entertaining themselves with Netflix on their iPads at night... Just what we were all missing! Loads of positives for Starlink connecting communities and allowing business and education to grow in underserviced areas, but for me Starlink has no place in Africa’s wild remote areas. That’s literally the magic of it all… IMO

      Thanks! I’ve subbed. In your opinion, how would you rate performance of gen3? At this stage I’m static mostly but want to do a bit of caravanning around SA so will take dishy with. Do you prefer gen3? I got the LAN adapter because I can’t stand the Wi-Fi system on gen2. Some devices constantly latch on to 2.4ghz despite being 5 capable. I would definitely do some modification if I take gen2 on the road… maybe not required for gen3.

    Very informative. Just a quick question. I am based in Ireland and planning to work from South Africa for a couple of months. I was wondering if I could buy the hardware here and activate it in South Africa with a Mozambican address. Would it still work in South Africa without having to pay extra for roaming? Just concerned about geo positioning.

    • @MovingPicturesAfrica
      @MovingPicturesAfrica  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So you can buy it in Ireland and activate global roaming and it will work in South Africa. Or you can transfer it to Mozambique and activate regional roaming and it will be cheaper. However, you need to wait 120 days from purchase or 90 days from activation before you can transfer a kit to a different region. So if you are only coming to SA in 3 months, buy it in Ireland and activate it for 1 month. Then wait till the 90 days is complete and transfer it to a Mozambique or Zambian account 👍

    • @dhanais2000

      @@MovingPicturesAfricacan't we just buy it in Ireland but not activate it there. Bring it to SA and activate it first time in Mozambique or Zambia?

    • @MovingPicturesAfrica
      @MovingPicturesAfrica  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dhanais2000 I don't believe that will work. When you buy the kit from Starlink it is linked to an account, so you need to transfer it to an African account (or pay global roaming rates). If it has not been activated, you must wait 120 days. If it has been activated, you must wait 90 days.

    Hello there, I am on the beautiful island of Zanzibar, Tanzania. Which means I have two neighboring countries that already have Starlink…. Tanzania is on the list, but the government is waiting for their bribe. Now, I checked how to create an account in both countries, Zambia and Kenya … for both I get this info: You can expect Starlink's typical high-speed Internet with short interruptions and high latency. While users can engage in common Internet activities such as email, online shopping, or streaming movies, activities such as online gaming or video calling can sometimes be difficult. The service will improve significantly over the next year
    Does not sound too promising, as I do have plenty of video calls. In your video then speed test showed 150 MBit …. I have currently just 10…😂. Will this work here?

    • @MovingPicturesAfrica
      @MovingPicturesAfrica  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi. So in general Starlink download speeds are great, but uploads are a bit slow (10-20mbps). So streaming works really well since it is mostly downloading. Video calls require good up and down speed and low latency. I believe the latency will improve over time. In my experience video calling is good but sometimes there's a bit of a lag.
