Thanks for doing so many different playthroughs and for uploading so regularly. I don't have a computer powerful enough to play this game and I don't think I've ever wanted a game more in my entire life. So having all these different campaigns really lets me see what the game is like and and experience it as best as I can without actually playing it. So thanks very much!
I know the feeling. I actually can play, but in minimal quality, with small unit. It isn't as fun... Watching all of this campaigns give a better experience of the game.
It's ok mate I had a Alienware X14 and its motherboard fucked itself about 5 days before I got this game now I have to wait for next year which is when I'll be getting an Alienware X17 (btw they're both laptops) then I can finally play it but for now it'll just be sitting on my shelf

But I enjoy playing the game well. It's actually hard for me to purposely hold back just so you guys can enjoy yourself. I don't want to hold back. I want to dominate.
I agree, it makes a lot of viewers mad and pissed when you do stupid things. Especial when a lot of us came to watch you to LEARN how to play total war well.

+Matt Cowell there's a difference between that and abusing the mechanic to create what is essentially an unbeatable army through auto resolve.
There's a time to use it obviously, but saying you hate casual, and then going out of your way to make the most difficult campaign a cakewalk through what I assume is a known exploit, things start to seem silly. If you can't beat it properly, without broken mechanic abuse I mean, maybe you need to get better.
Once you go Legend, you never go back.

If there's one thing I've got to give CA, it's the soundtrack and the unit quotes. They're great
getting Singmar Reborn and Everchosen achievements at the same time is very close to Tzeentch's level of trolling.
According to my tests, Chaos in 1 has the strongest doomstack in the game in the form of Dragon Ogre Shaggoths. Balanced armies, doomstacks, 19 heroes... the AI simply cannot beat it with a single army.
Caveat: I don't have Beastmen, Norsca, or Wood Elves yet, so there could be something in there that can take them.
EDIT: The tests I performed were on NORMAL, because that's the difficulty I play. No promises on harder difficulties.
40 minutes of Auto resolves with one manual battle, I aint complaining but Chaos is my favorite faction and you are one of my favorite total war players!

U typed too soon. Surreal right now is also cutting troops saying he cant hold the upkeep cost. I think he saw this video and decided to do the same, in order to recruit more stacks. Not that it is a bad thing. Also, upkeep cost is higher in Legendary than in very hard.

I agree you have almost certainly correctly discerned how to run Chaos early, and again it's a cheese-fest. That's not your fault, it's directly a consequence of shitty game mechanics' designs.
It perplexing (if not outright stupid) that they design the game such that it rewards you absurdly generously for NOT doing that which is an integral part of it, namely fighting battles.
Really disappointing.
I'd love to hear their designers explain why they did that; is it a backhander at the calibre of a lot of people who play the game?
Or have they done it so if you want to run around with stacks of mega units you have to use them in manual battles so as not to get hosed by the crappy auto-resolve?
Surely they could have achieved that without making a-r generally fucked in the head?

When I was at CA I sat down and explained to them what was wrong with the auto resolve in detail and how to fix it. They clearly didn't listen. I want nothing more than to return to medieval 2 style where Auto resolve almost always leads to a shit/random result and fighting the battles yourself is the key to campaign greatness. If you watch my medieval 2 campaigns I never auto resolve except if the odds are like 100:1.
When were you at CA? That's interesting, unsurprising and rather sad.
The thing to me that has always prevented TW being truly great games is the AI and other mechanics such as auto-resolve.
Watching you cheese a bunch of Orcs on their battlements with massed quarrelers (your Dwarf campaign obviously) makes me conclude they don't hire suitably skilled programmers for AI and that's because clearly they don't give a shit and think it's a waste of money (which given their sales perhaps is true).
The test I'd set the AI programmers is pretty simple: how closely can it assess things and react as a reasonably competent human? In the case of that siege, surely you'd simply withdraw your melee troops from the wall until the enemy attempted to scale them?
Indeed they could so easily address that particular cheese by allowing units on walls to take a 'cover' stance that immediately increases missile def by a massive margin, so much so that a unit of missile troops would run out of ammo before killing even 25% of them. When a unit climbs and defenders come out of 'cover' stance, give a much greater chance of hitting friendlies than the defenders. So now you'd have to fight them on the walls as intended.
If you breach the walls? Have melee troops to either side ready to blend anything trying to come in, but NOT exposed to missiles, so again the attacker would suffer big 'fiendly fire' penalties if they tried missile spam into a contested breach.
These simple things would make battlements what they ought to be, namely a huge force multiplier for the defenders (I suppose the issue then might be you'd not take a city with an army + garrison, but then they could address that through a cap on total units allowed in the city - perhaps tied to city level? - or something similar).
And so on.
Sad CA seem to be yet another "do as little as we can get away with while trumpeting pretty graphics" developer when they could truly make something spectacular with a bit more effort and smarts.
Enjoying your vids, but it's a little sad to realise the most effective way to play is to exploit the inherent weaknesses rather than manage forces in ways that might make sense on a battlefield.

Oh, one other thing. If you take the Prince as your starting legendary lord, he gives +6 leadership v humans and, probably more telling, a global +1 growth (I think it's global).
The hero unit (the combat dude, your first hero given to you) is a complete beast if put on a hell steed or whatever it's called; stats are crazy shit.

Auto resolve leads to more believable post battle outcomes than fighting the battle in med2 lol. Even on VH its easy to just hammer and anvil and wipe out the ai's armies. Or they suicide their general and break easily. Im failing to see how that makes it better or more balanced. Auto resolve can never perfectly simulate a battle lol. Im sure its a lot more difficult to calculate and program it than people think. Also you can choose to fight every battle. You are just choosing to do the most optimal thing. Nothing is stopping a player from fighting battles.
Great stuff, LOTW. I heard you say something that I see so many others not taking seriously when I watch them play. In order to build better, and/or more, armies, you need to build your infrastructure first. I see so many players run off and start conquering shit with no thought to how they're gonna pay for all the armies they need to protect what they take. Great to see somebody who understands this.
So glad to see this, when you first made a dwarf campaign video I was craving the idea of you doing chaos, they just seem like such a good fit, very strong, and there's hardly a dull moment with the campaign ai being quite aggressive towards you, especially as a horde it seems.

I think it would be neat if you revisited the warriors of chaos. I know it probably isn't high on your list but given the chaos themed nature of WH3, It would be cool to see these guys again. I just tried the Chaos Warriors myself, until turn 55 and figured I can do much better. I was going to try exactly what you are doing, because autoresolve always damaged my strongest units, yet the cheap army would win battles I couldn't win manually.
I am glad I found this video, confirming my efforts. Too bad it is so broken.
Always pisses me off how the NPC never/hardly has wounded armies either.
i think horde factions suit legend, don't have to bother with settlements, just go and burn

I really like how faithful they've been to the source material concerning all the factions. It always felt a bit strange in the Khorne campaign where you spent a lot of time on infrastructure, when the Chaos Warriors don't have that word in their vocabulary.
I only watch Hoc and Legend! Hoc is a experienced casual player, who enjoys the game and plays as well as he could. Legend also does somewhat casual walkthroughs, but he also is intelligent and mature enough to from time to time rape the Total War games to pieces to show the fundamental laws in the game.

I totally agree with your starts with the horde. Cheap units are good. You have no Idea how much militia I use in Empire: Total war. They are effective if fully stacked

It's interesting the differences between when you did this and whatever changes were made after as I'm going through with Warriors of Chaos right now. For example there is no sack option there's only raze, loot and raze, awaken so you can't sack farm. Hordes don't take attrition next to each other either. I decided to use a tactic you mentioned in your TWW2 tier list for this faction where you destroy the Marauder building and go straight into Chaos Warriors and while I got a second army later than here it's working out better than I thought. Now Archaeon and Sigvald are tearing shit up.
Thx of the footage. You should give an ability path, i haven't fully watched this video, but it's something quite useful. I assume that you use the growth one and blitzkrieg with Chaos right ? It really made my run successful.

Sacking Bearsoling camp over and over and farming levels is no longer possible. You raze the settlement when you sack it.

Hey Legend, how is the % upkeep reduction is coded to work in the game? Is it off the base upkeep or compounded off the new reduced upkeep? For example if it's compounded off the new upkeep, 20% + 20% isn't a 40% reduction off the base, it's only 36%.

chaos is really hard, but i really enjoy the chaos wolves, not a fan of the marauder horseman but thewolves once upgraded to poison and extra speed can chase down anything which is chaos only way to handle horse archer units
I really do hope they do something about the way autoresolve works. Was hoping it would be fixed for Warhammer.
When the most efficient way to do well in a game about epic battles is to spam cheap units and autoresolve, you know something has gone very, very wrong.
Well for fantasy it's spot on, in 8th edition if you couldn't field a 5 units of 50 clan rats you were screwed

The autoresolve could be fixed so easily if they simply made it so the casualties were NOT evenly distributed - it wouldn't be perfect yet but it'd be a start. More randomness and making quality troops more important than numbers would be the next step.
I just love it when you exploit every single glitch and flaw of the game :)

Thank you for the excellent campaign, but many mechanism has been changed from that date. For example chaos can no longer sack.
150 turns in on my warriors of chaos campaign, and I've still barley gotten anywhere. Shit's hard man!
They really need to fix the autoresolve. Being able to sack the same settlement over and over again for the same rewards is also pretty stupid.

I have to admit you have got my attention with how you plan on running this campaign. Personally I like Chaos' better tier units but I like winning even more. Looking forward to you bathing in the tears of your haters.
This playthrough helped me, for one. My Chaos playthrough was 77 turns in and i had no momentum at all. The horde proximity was a good tip, I thought they had to be in different regions. Might have to start a new Chaos campaign with all this in mind. Is it just me, or does Chaos not play how you think they should play?

If you are at a surplus
It lets you construct buildings within a horde.
It allows the creation of new hordes and it is also required to build buildings. Not sure if heroes need growth though.
Even though I'm awful and like to play on easy, I take lessons from legend's gameplay. If it works at the hardest levels, it probably will work at the easiest 😊
Best Organized Chaos force ever
To be honest I don't like your strategy in this campaign. But it's too damn good. Really awesome. And this is legendary so everything is allowed. A fun campaign I'm going to watch. I hope you start smashing armies with Kholek soon, the absolute chaos bringer :)
Kinda makes sense for Chaos to start off with hordes of shitty generic meatshields while they go around throatfucking minor factions. And then, when everyone least expects it, here comes gigantic stacks of elite units

Why not start with prince Sigvald so you can upgrade all of his non fighting skills for the start, and get Archaon later so you can make him a beast?

I just beat it on Very hard with chaos using the same tactic but with warriors. Marauders are garbage. I only had 4 lords the entire game. Good shit though Legend.

Im probably going to play my campaigns in order from easiest to hardest so dwarves first than chaos last. hopefully by the time I get to them in several months or so I will have learned alot about warhammer

Yeah, he also actually spend years rampaging through the wastes (both northern and southern) with a huge horde of marauders and Chaos Warriors.

Tina Whitaker I don't think centuries, but yeah, he spend a lot of years searching the six treasures of chaos that would make him the everchosen (currently reading through those books, they're amazing!). It's actually never really mentioned in the books how long exactly it's been, only that he doesn't know it himself and that he only knows it's been a lot of years.

Yes, the marauder spam is just more effective at the start. Better troops are more effective later on.

But still use every other advantage you can get, calling it like brutal war or something, playing one of the hardest campaign on basically a extra hard setting, would be awesome to see! :D
I'm already doing 2 challenge campaigns - the veni vidi vici and this is total waaagh. The only reason I'm doing chaos is because a lot of people requested it. Those challenges tend to be difficult for like the first 10 episodes and then its a cake walk, then the views drop off, and I'm stuck for another 50 episodes trying to finish it off. So basically if you guys wanted me to be more hard core, you need to prove you're actually going to watch it. At the moment I just wanted to beat this effectively without adding any personal challenges into the mix. Legendary difficulty just on its own is more than many people can handle. It also becomes annoying when I'm the only youtuber doing these challenges. I'd probably do more if there was any competition. If there is anyone doing them I'm unaware of it.

Don't get angry about little shits; It isn't worth the effort. Btw CA #MakeAutoResolveGreatAgain. I think it is dumb that auto resolve is so broken that it forces you to play this way and can't use any of the cool looking and best units in the real time battles.

To be honest, the game is very good. It has a few minor bugs, but its only real flaw is lack of playable factions. For the rest, the game is very good in what it is supposed to be: a Warhammer grand strategy game.
