That goes for all the Total War games. Not tied to any campaign per say.
Its just that once you can get enough armies to properly take and defend territory at the same time it snowballs far faster than the AI can handle it.

My first Chorf campaign with Zhlatan (on VH) I got DOWd around turn 100 by a giant Order alliance (Thorgrim, Ungrim, Karl, Gelt, Louen, Kislev.) They sent literal streams of dozens of stacks at me. I had never seen anything like this in WH3, I thought they must have drastically changed campaign AI for 3.0

I'm generally not a fan of how difficulty is implemented in Total War. For the most the enemy is a dumbass on all difficulties, but they just get free units and stats on higher difficulties along with increased player bias. Then you have to react strategies that minimize unit losses, which usually means spamming ranged units and running around with a caster character that nukes enemy armies by itself.

Ikko Ikki legendary for me in Shogun 2. Enemy sends doomstacks to my capital, I defeat them in siege defense, after some turns they return with more armies and repeat. Got so boring I stopped the campaign when I was hoping my enemies would give me glorious final stand.

there are mods that give armies restrictions to unit types (or type+tier). this forces armies to have a more balanced spread of units with less elite units as well. this also applies to the AI. while this obviously doesnt fix how poor the AI is at making decisions at least it does add more variety to units being used, which tend to make campaigns remain fun to play for longer (i still rarely complete one as it gets boring in late game).

    • @DJ-1Q84

A game I play called Gates of Hell does this and it's so annoying. They're making Ai changes to it that are actually good. But the AI is so brain-dead, and the only way they're difficult is when they can spam units. In conquest (practically same as this) you'll have panzerjagers while they have T34's even KVs have shown up before I even got close to a panzer on harder difficulties. Not fun imo, and I strive for difficult games sometimes.

@Zerkovich Playing as Skarbrand i noticed that i got prevented from replenishing my troops although i shouldve been able to replenish anywhere. Trying to figure out why, i noticed that the reason was that Malagor The Dark Omen was in the same region as me. Because when i left The region i were able to replenish once more, until Malagor followed me to the same region once again preventing it. Heres to the main point, Malagor lives just south of Wurzag. This thing that happened me mightve affected you in ur campaign was Wurzag but with a slight twist. Since i was a Chaos action and thus immune to Chaos corruption it just prevented replenishment for me but since Wurzag does not havet that immunity it mightve caused you to take Chaos attrition. Now the reason you mightve not seen Malagor is possibly since ge was either in hidden encampent stance or hidden beast path stance. Malagor usually moves through Wurzags territory to reach Mourkain south east of Wurzags territory as it is surrounded by swamp lands. Hope this info and theory helps. You can get a much stronger campaign start with Wurrzag if you attack the first army but then retreat before the battle, that moves you out of their zone of control and then you can go straight for Dragonhorn Mines on turn 1 before the faction leader has managed to build any units and take that city, thus gaining the factions settlements via confederation AND the 1st army you would normally fight is yours and undamaged.

I only had grimgor's stack and one province and I had to slowly push them back. I felt like a salmon trying to swim upriver. Every stack I killed would spawn 2 more just beyond the fog of war. In old RTS like C&C 3 Kaines Wrath, skirmish had different a.I "commanders" that had different personalities like steamroller, tutrle, and aggressive which was easy to see and experience. I think the problem for a game like Total War is that it's hard to show that kind of personality since half the game is just moving your pieces which is the same for all factions and other half has so many possibilities that programming such an AI would be ridiculously expensive for a video game or outright impossible. Hence why Devs go for the buffs instead since it's a practical albeit simple solution

@@zhshsG7 Take Heavy Shock Cav. Regular Cav (And sometimes light Shock) don't do enough Morale damage from a rear charge. Bonus if the unit causes fear (Gryphon Legion on Kislev). Hit the back, forget about damage, pull out, charge the unit BESIDE them. Both morales lower, then lower because of each other, and struggle to recover. That's proper cycle charging, not just charging 1 unit over and over until it breaks. Break the whole line / segment. Not a single unit.
The Legendary combat bonuses are relatively minor. 15% melee, and 20% Defense. 15% of 28 is 4.5 so that 28 Melee attack turns into a super scary...32.
As noted, there are both Items, Techs, and Redline skills that will make your units perform better, much faster. The AI gets this too, but it rarely optimizes and synergizes as well as a player can (Which is why Kislev Kossars and Skavenslingers can be so deadly in the hands of a player).
The bonuses are more terrifying on the LLs, as it makes lords like Valkyia the nightmare she should be, and makes the battles/campaign have actual themes and fear. "Oh its just Chaos whatever.. OH SHIT ITS VALKYIA."
The missle dodging can also be manipulated. Use Mortar/Artillery fire INFRONT of your lines, and the AI will try to dodge, giving your units more time to shoot. They won't charge through it. They also don't dodge while engaged, so if you can form a front line that forces the enemy to blob, you can actually get more bang for your buck. You just can't whittle the front lines as easily as before while they march forward, but they can be more devastating when used in this regard.
As for playing different strategies, you can play regular, with some tactic modification, the reason most players, especially youtubers, don't use melee units, it because they don't want to sit between battles. Gotta keep that viewer engaged, and spending 1-2 turns to replenish instead of constant combat is not "Viewer friendly" but perfectly fine for players not worried about other people being interested in the campaign. It makes for a slower campaign, sure, but if you aren't in a rush to absolutely map paint or speedrun the campaign, there's no need to rush. Just enjoy the slaughter.

After playing on almost only legendary for WH2 and 3, the biggest difference in the early game is having to fight manually and prioritise directions where you can take out a faction easily or the one with the biggest aversion to you. And you gotta receuir constantly and build almost exclusively with battle money. The AI is much much more likely to declare war on you as soon as your power ranking drops and you take too many casualties, especially if they dont like you to begin with. So key factors to first 20 turn legendary success is recruit to the point you got almost no income and fight everything manually minimising losses :) deffo a good video demonstrating you cant play v hard and legendary the same way or ur screwed

It's probably better as Wurrzag to become friends early on with as many greenskins as possible by joining their wars with distant minor factions, and then focusing in on one foe at a time, e.g. the ogres, or the beastmen, or Skarbrand. Very hard is my preferred difficulty as well. I wouldn't mind legendary at all if it only meant more modifiers for the AI (in fact, I would prefer it with how easier WH3 is compared to WH2).
But one thing - I hate the save restriction. And second thing - why the hell is battle realism mode in campaign difficulty and not battle difficulty? I tend to pause battles less and less the more experienced I get, so that isn't a very big problem, but restricted camera is really annoying, especially if my units fight far away from each other.
I only did one legendary campaign in WH2 and one in WH3, only to get the respective achievements. Like I said, I don't mind the AI getting more cheats. But it's the other restrictions that make legendary really annoying for me.

    I don't play Legendary for 3 reasons:
    1) I don't like having saves restricted when the game is in such an unstable state
    2) Legendary gets to a certain difficulty where if you don't cheese and do the most optimal building options and unit recruitment, you will most likely lose. I don't like when difficulty limits your toolbox. I also don't like cheese. It doesn't make one better at the game when all they do is take the main control point and the AI does nothing about it.
    3) Diplomacy becomes even less relevant on Legendary as most AI all hate you. Again, limiting the tools you can use to succeed.
I'll play Hard if I want a chill campaign (and I think this is the true way the game should be balanced) but usually I'll play Very Hard to keep myself on my toes when decision-making.

As someone who plays Legendary alone since, well, ever since Shogun 2 tbh. Legendary is all about ultimate efficency, for example things like taking 2 turns to take a walled settlement is something you REALLY REALLY dont wanna do in Legendary unless you absolutely have to (in 99% of the cases you don't have to). Because AI will outrecruit you every single time, you don't wanna give them any free turns.
Its like playing chess, you need to plan your moves before starting the campaign and when the randomness happens you gotta adapt. In Wurrzags case the randomness is Malagor/Mors and Skarbrand. But how do we be ready for that randomness? Well thats why i say its about efficency. For example there is a little trick you can do with Wurrzag at the start of the campaign in order to end up having 2 armies and you can deal with your initial enemy in 1 turn, even without the trick there is no real reason to recruit before attacking Dragonhorn Mines because you can attack it in a single turn take it and then recruit, again efficency. You might say its not a big deal but it is a huge deal, every turn counts and it counts towards your demise, in this case Skarbrand, Malagor and Mors. Also you need to always check diplomacy to see if you can get money from factions around you. Again going back to the siege of Barak Var, there is no reason for wurzzag to wait 2 turns to attack that settlement when he can just take it in one turn, again, every turn counts on Legendary.
The rule of thumb with Legendary is always, how much can i possibly do in this 1 turn?
I often play multiplayer campaigns with my friend and its always weird to me when he starts recruiting instead of attacking the settlement, take it and then recruit. I am like "no no don't recruit you can take the settlement" and he is like "shouldn't i get more units before i attack?". Again Legendary forces you into that efficent mindset and i really enjoy it tbh.

No offense but i can tell that you haven't played Imrik on Very Hard, because it's utterly wrong.
The lack of trade or allies never was the issue with Imrik (even though it does play a part). The biggest problem with Imrik was always and still is the same : the map. Imrik starts in one of the most opened terrain position in the whole game, bar none, making his position an exceedingly difficult one to defend. On top of that, ALL of his major opponents, namely the Skaven and Orcs (lead by Grimgor and Snitch and even Queek if you got unlucky and he'd beaten Lybaras - which was my case) have the underground movement option, *while Imrik does not.*
Ergo, all of your ennemies can jump around you and attack you whenever and however they want while you have no way to do shit about it but trying to lure them with ambushes (for nearly a hundred turns.)
Top it all of, the main attractive point about Imrik, namely his dragon events, randomly pop on the map, most likely at places that utterly clash with your own military plans.
Those are the key reasons why most Imrik players utterly forsake the starting position and go to Calimdor as soon as they have the occasion to (which, like an utter moron, i DIDN'T do.) And no matter how much someone would pay me to do it all over again, i, for the life of me, would never attempt it again - let alone on Legendary.

Also, I never cared about his dragon events. Those were bonuses when they were convenient. Not must haves so that is more of a personal choice. If that bothered you then fair enough. Didn't bother me.
