Thanks for commenting. There is a lower- key version th-cam.com/video/IeMAaCvvlY4/w-d-xo.html That's why I called this one "for soprano". It's only a reference name only. The piece is oftenly performed by sopranos, mezzo and altos. B.R

Get a range of 3+ octaves and it's an irrelevance and will only pigeon hole one. I sing everything from sempre liberta to mache dich - the lower you go, the higher you can fly because you are training in vocal cord flexibility. Just a thought; I simply refuse to be put in a box 😊

The role was originally composed for a very young amateur female singer whose voice we have no idea about.
This is also why the range of the piece is a middling one, avoiding both very high and very low notes.
This allows any singer to approach the aria, although low voices will find those high Gs a bit challenging.
That said, Dido being a powerful middle-aged queen of great dignity and sensibility, for today's standards a darker voice is probably more suited to the role, contrasting in that with those of her maids. It needn't be an alto though.

@@advocate1563 it's not always pigeon boxing. Every voice has a range where it sings at its best and that is to be taken into account if you are a professional singer and wish for a long career.
It's also true that voice warming exercises usually span a wider range, to improve flexibility, but voice warming with a piano in a music room is one thing, singing a difficult role in a big opera house is another matter.
