It’s not only the magnificent voice, not the clarity of diction, nor the musical skills, nor the awesome presence; she had that inexpressible something extra in her interpretations and their depth of emotional truth that makes us shiver.
I first heard Ms Norman about 45 years ago. She sang Strauss’s ‘Four last songs’ at her graduate school in Ann Arbor. I’d never wept in a recital before.
This is one of my favourite pieces of music. Normally, I will sit quietly and enjoy it, but this had me sobbing from almost the first note. I do not think that I have ever heard such anguish, and minutes after it ended, the tears are still flowing.
I wish I would have known about Ms. Norman 20 years ago. I would have found a way to get to at least one of her live concerts in my lifetime. 💔 It makes me more grateful for her recordings. Thank you Ms. Norman. 🕊️ 💜
Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me, On thy bosom let me rest, More I would, but Death invades me; Death is now a welcome guest. When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.
Funny and sad thing in the same time with yt. Almost every time I open in a video with opera singers and or with similar subjects the ads are not in them. They put them only in the videos with the most views? Because if that is true than such a few people have good taste.
I often wish she had done a staged or even recorded Gioconda. She could have demonstrated the integrity I believe is meant to be portrayed in her character through the depth's of Ms. Norman's voice and art.

правда за Россией
It's called presence or personality.
So *very* true.

And there it is, the voice and the pain of Queen Dido, emotion, beauty and ultimately sadness and death. Incredibly beautiful.
Jessye Norman was not an interpreter of Purcell's Dido. She was Dido. Astonishing and moving to tears.
Her voice has always been a light to my darkness. I will spend my last moments listening to her sing.
Interesting you should say that; this recording will be included in my funeral line-up.
Your comments caused shivers to move down my body. I can think of no better voice to listen to in one's last moments.
When music goes into another dimension...
Correct. Their was something there that transcended this plane.
Written more than 300 years ago, yet across time it speaks to us still and touches us as deeply now as then. Music expresses the ineffable.
Im still so torn about her passing!!! Sleep in peace Queen Jessye!!!
Me too... She was ethereal

I met her and saw her in concert; both were ethereal experiences…

She seemed like such a wonderful soul! She with her heavenly voice is singing with the angels now. Rest in peace!

The sadness of the Queen before she commits suicide...
@thomas Romano....which of the queens are you referring to?.....if it's Jessy Norman, she did not commit suicide. She died of multiple organ failure.
@@angelabucknor4981 I believe he's referring to the role she's singing..

How about Dame Janet Baker?
I often wish she had done a staged or even recorded Gioconda. She could have demonstrated the integrity I believe is meant to be portrayed in her character through the depth's of Ms. Norman's voice and art.
sorry for typo on, "depth".
😍😍😍😍😍😍
я люблю тебя джесси
Norman outdoes Flagstad here.
not forgetting Janet Baker of course
@@rodcoates7027 Not at all.
This looks like the Palacio Carlos V in the Alhambra Granada
Looks like, true.

La interpretación, preciosa. Pero lo que es la traducción... 😅
The queen is about to commit suicide and she excepts her fate telling her loved ones to remember her but forget all of her faults

She has a powerful voice, but the constant vibrato is really grating.
She is a trained Opera singer. Not to mention a Wagnerian one at that.
Her vibrato is too much slows down the song!
Too much vibrato and too self-indulgent for this repertoire. Listen to Lorraine Hunt Lieberson for how it should sound.
Leontyne Price's version was and still is absolute perfection!
It's all a matter of taste, as the lady said when she kissed the pig.
