The clearest, best sequenced task analysis of dnb composition and sound design on the web. For the muddle headed overthinking producers out there this is the antidote for focus and clarity. Big up from Australia. Still listen to your heat ‘The Boy’ years later Choon!!! Something stabby sound design wise would be amazing. I love the stabs in ‘shattered’ by your boy Gremlinz.... something like that vibe would be awesome!!!! Keep up the amazing work and good luck with your channel and products. 👍👍👍
thanks for the feedback Sacha, bigup australia d&b crew! I have done a stabs video last year, but will keep in mind of possibly doing a new one. Hope you're well!
Yeah there's somewhat of an epiphany going on in my head right now and it's bloody 3am and insomnia is kicking my ass at the moment but now I want to get on the studio and start on a 16 bar section! Dagnamit!
Yeah 100% the antidote! I've got mates who dj who have tinkered with tunes for ages but never really released anything. They're all trying to be purists and completely original but they give themselves to much work and they don't get into the track properly. Just put some samples and loops together if you're a beginner and get INTO IT!
I mean the house and framework stuff you talk about btw. I wanted to ask some questions about your masterclass on tech tools and templates as i'm about to start producing dnb after being a four to the floor producer for years, just curious on the best channel to contact you on?
I seem to overly complicate everything. This is so simple. I find myself trying too hard and end up making mistakes within my blocks with what I think should be there and what should actually be done for a good outcome. Producing these past 2 years or so has become so frustrating I'm at the point of stopping.
Hey, oddly enough I find your comment encouraging, because I feel the same! Making music is hard work, and I think most successful people will tell that the key quality is PERSISTENCE. Take a break, but don't give up. When it comes to the danger of messing up what you've already got, I got into the habit of simply duplicating the channel, or copying the old clip way off to the side, so you can restore stuff if necessary. Another thing for me: To prevent endless noodling with the same clip, I force myself to commit by rendering the MIDI to audio so I can't change it, and then I'm stuck with what I made. There's no such thing as a final clip - they are all subject to endless evolution so you have to know when to stop with one sound and move on to the next.
Uncle dugs with mc navigator and fearless at a random pub in Brixton for a day celebrating the life of stevie hyper d! Wasn’t really a rave was just a set of cdjs on a bar, pub was tiny but it was packed! Best day out ever
Haven't managed to break out of a single block for the last ten years. Following along has helped me a lot. Maybe i should now go back through my hundreds of unfinished tracks and i might have a few albums lol
Yes! I’ve been producing music for over 20 years, and this is the best explanation and demonstration I’ve ever seen on track arrangement and structure. Super clear, explained perfectly, and extremely helpful. Keep up the great work brotha!
STRANJAH, you have now been granted legendary status here in the UK. When lockdown is over and we rid of this virus, please plan a trip to the UK and we'll get our bounce on. You're more than welcome to lodge at my place!
gah this series is so helpful. Its like... i know this stuff, but seeing someone put it all together in such a concise way really hits home in a way that i can actually apply to my own music.
BIG UP STRANJAH !..EXCELLENT VIDEOS..VERY CLEARLY EXPLAINED..PLEASE MAKE ONE ON ROUTING/BUSSES/SENDS & MIXING THE TRACK TOGETHER..MUCH LOVE FROM THE UK..PEACE
I'm just setting out on my production journey, been listening to dnb for years, and finally got a decent laptop and ableton. I've already experienced so much confusion and have frequently felt overwhelmed by how much there is to know . Finishing a half decent song is one of my first aims that I hope to achieve in the next month or so and your videos have helped me more than any other content on the internet. Thanks so much man! Also love the tune!
STRANJAH is like the Sun , helped me learn, pointed me to other places of where to learn ( dnb academy ) etc , and get sounds like breakbeats, (rhythmlab ) while having fun one ;love big up $
Exactly. This is always the point I try to get across in my videos. Take what I show you and apply it to your own works, because they are interchangeable.
This was a great stepping stone to see how other producers arrange their drum and bass song so I can physically see them in ableton. My one complaint is on your ableton project file you used several VST's like serum etc etc that I don't not have sadly so I couldn't hear all of the sounds you made into the song. If you could make this again with only ableton instruments that would be freaking awesome. Anyway thanks for making these videos!! It really helps an aspiring producer.
Right now... 990 likes, ZERO dislikes. Speaks for itself homie. Thank you for this. Your approach and technical know how and your willingness to share that are just so great.
This way you have to summarize and exemplify fundamental techniques is really what makes you one the best teachers here on the Tube 🤖🤘 Ever thought about a video about preparing or "arranging" parts for a live-set instead of production? It's just an idea since I'm currently working on a live setup.
Thanks Jah man :) been watching your videos for a while now ... keep going as it is very educative and beautiful how you construct knowledge and share it ! thank you!
Thanks for this, super helpful! I've created a million 8 or 16 bar loops that sound really cool but I could never bring myself to make it into a full track because it just sounds repetitive to me. You make it look so easy!
Love the simplicity of it all...I’m a simple man! I’m just starting the music journey myself and at times I find I’m doing too much reading and trying to ‘learn’ everything rather than just mess about and make a track. Would be interested to know in the future on how your own journey started. What you have learnt about the whole journey...about yourself and making music. Keep it real ✌️
This channel is a godsend. Came to my attention at exactly the right time. Went back through all the vids. Keep up the great work man! +1 for the Reese tutorial
Aaahh I am a super novice and using Garage Band to this track for now (I know haha), but your tutorials are so easy to understand and apply with any DAW for dummies like me. I'm not done yet, but this is my first time actually building a track myself and I used to get daunted, but just having the structure explained so simply has helped me make way more progress than I have in the past and I'm actually excited to keep coming back to the project to finish it/don't feel bad that I can't work any faster, just cos I know what I have to do now. Seriously, you are a god send. THANK YOU
@@STRANJAH I had a lot of fun playing with it, and spawned a tune from it over the weekend. There's plenty of mileage in your jungle kit. Big ups Stranjah.
In the previous tutorial on arrangement you mentioned a "triple call and response". Would you be so kind as to post an example or two of tracks using that approach? And thank you for everything you do for us here, your tutorials are on point, no unnecessary bs and very comprehensible.
Love the vids - so helpful, I have a suggestion A tutorial on different ways to finish the 16th bar to go in again for the next 16 bars Kind of like a break but some producers use synth effects / modulation / drum effects etc..... hope that makes sense!
love your videos and ive learnt so much from them so far and it just came to me how the break remix of what you are is a decent example of call and response in a banging track thats just flawless
Love your tutorials, very simplified and easy to follow... also helping me with creative blocks by showing me the steps of things in proper order so I can focus more on the creative (musicality) side of things instead of getting stuck in rabbit holes with sound design or pattern arrangements (editing) before I even have a 16 bar bit completed.
Thanks again for making these videos, I do learn from them and I am using them to enhance my boring tracks.even though I’m using Reason, this is incredibly useful information. That I can apply to my creations.
I'd be interested in how you tune your samples. Great Tut By the way. Also in a number of videos you mention using a Reason plugin to initially slice your breaks- is there any work around in Ableton this will mimic the same slicing? thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Big ups! Glad to see that your channel is becoming a one-stop shop for good DNB production. It's rare to find a resource that's concise, well put together, and has a wide variety of important topics for a genre like jungle/dnb. Question stranjah; what's your opinion on more left-field dnb like Blocks & Escher? They have such a unique sound and arrangement style.
Really helpful explanation. A question: how do you know when you have enough ‘material’ (ie. layers/variations) to proceed to the arrangement stage from your initial loop?
Thanks so much for this video! Arrangement is the bottleneck of my track making. This is a big help. Any suggestions for other resources? You mention other formulas and structures and I'm super curious what these are. I wish they would have taught me this in music school!
would you consider an episode or series where you take some tunes we have made and give feedback? or even fix them? I've seen trap producers do this on TH-cam with some success and I'd be keen to get specific knowledge from you. once again, amazing stream today and great vid
Yes I think I will make a call out for people to submit Projects or Stems (if they're on another DAW) and I'll fix the track. Just planning out the format of the show.
These tutorials are awesome, thank you for all your work! Side-note..got to open for you back in 2013 at Funked Dub NYC..believe it was Halloween haha...Good Times... Big Ups!
