  • It’s been a great start to the year as far as running shoe reviews are concerned. I’ve tested and reviewed 27 different shoes from lots of different running brands so far this year. There’s been some awesome new shoes that I’ve really enjoyed running in, however there have been a few duds along the way! So in today's video we take a deep dive into my top 3 most disappointing trail shoes of 2024 so far.
    Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

    This type of video is really appreciated and necessary.
    Often videos are only ever promotions and glorify shoes. Meanwhile any written reviews that are not positive are usually negative and a disgruntled wearer rather than anything constructive.
    People spend a lot of money on the footwear so it's good to know some opinions on why they don't suit someone.

    I'm really excited to see you try more PUMA shoes. They really seem to be pushing the envelope more than other brands imho.
    The split sole Fast-r is getting a lot of good reviews for long road runs. And the deviate has the carbon plate for a more standard run-fast shoe. And the foreverrun nitro which is supposed to be a fun/bouncy stability shoe comparable to the Saucony Tempus, which also is on the list I want to try. And they have the Voyage trail running shoe which is the one that I'm excited to see reviewed by someone who does more trail running.

    Since I started trail running I always used Inov-8 until about 2 years ago when they messed up the fit/width of the trail talon and I switched to Topo and Hoka. Shame they now messed up the trail fly. I recently dropped Topo, the Hoka in wide fit is more comfortable for long distance.
    I still have 1 pair of Inov-8 mud claw wide just for wet mud but other than that I now use Hoka Speedgoats for everything.

    I’m a massive fan of older Nike trail shoes, Pegasus 2 and 3 are still my go to shoe. I’d love to try a pair of zegama 2’s but they do look really heavy and clunky. And as for those Scott’s!! What on earth were they thinking 😂

  • @BroccLeeAV
    @BroccLeeAV 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I love my Nike Zegama 2 just on the mere fact of how accommodating it is for wider higher arched feet. Cushion feels wonderfully pretty as well. Skill is some of the biggest factor on technical trails. Mountain biking teaches a lot in that area.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally agree that skill has a big part to play when running on technical trails. I’ve been running on technical trails for around 20 years so I have the skills. I’ve also run on the trails in 100’s of different makes and models of trail shoes and the Zegama 2 is that stable. The midsole cushioning is comfortable but it’s never going to be stable with that amount of cushioning under your foot. Then we’ve got to mention the weight and drainage issues! 🤔 I also ride mountain bikes 👍

    • @BroccLeeAV
      @BroccLeeAV วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Run4Adventure I haven't run in them a ton yet but have loved them thus far. I haven't tried nearly as man shoes, but can say they're say more comfortable than some of the recent trail shoes I've tried, which is a big deal for me and my foot injuries.
      I tried the Brooks Caldera 7 on and immediately hated them. Went for the Zegama 2 over the 2 Hokas I was looking at since Hoka is typically way too narrow for me.
      Kinda random, but I do love the Hoka Skyward X as it's the most comfortable Hoka I've ran in thus far.
      Yeah, coming from a mtb background helps immensely.
      You make a good point, skill is most important, but a better bike, or shoes is gonna get that much more out of you for sure.
      Maybe I'll change my mind after more running in them, but for now I'm loving the Zegama 2. Won't have rain in Northern California anytime soon, so won't know the verdict in rainy weather.

    Love my Zegama 2s, like any shoe they wont work for everyone. They definitely arent going to drain water very well and they are a bit heavier but given the amount of cushion it is understandable and actually quite stable all things considered. Still lighter than most shoes we had available 10-15 years ago with much less cushion.
    Ive had them on technical trails and they are perfectly acceptable but they really excel on long runs on rocky two tracks and dirt roads (which is what I bought them for). If your runs are on a higher percentage of technical single track they may not be the best.

    The trailfly is very comfy but absurdly ugly... The trailfly speed is great looking but you definitely feel too much underfoot for my liking very similar to the Altra lone peak 8. Inov8's brilliant move to footshaped shoes whilst also offering wides is going to be game changing for me. Just offer a lightweight road shoe with mid cushion and i will live in them an the trailfly!

    I used then Zegama 2 for the first half of the Mozart 100 this year, it was the race worst weather ever with rain and storm… the Zegama outsole handled the wet muddy descents like a blast… yes the drain not so good. Changed to TNF Vectic Pro 2 for the second half of the race, and regretted that decision immediately due to the poor outsole grip.

    Hi! I think you must have gotten the inov-8 trailfly 'speed' in wide (and not standard) since that's the only current option available?
    The inov-8 trailfly speed (wide) fits my feet great. I think it's because my heel is quite narrow while my forefoot is wider. My heel and midfoot fits securely while my toes can spread without sliding around. If they ever come out in a 'standard' version, I'm curious to hear your thoughts if you have the opportunity to give them another try :)
    I was super impressed by their boomerang insole as well!

    Not sure I agree about the Zegama 2. Some other TH-cam folks used it at Cocodona and loved it. It runs very smooth, and has great geometry. Not sure how you are running in it, but it is decently stable -- at least as stable as the Caldera 6. The Zegama 2 takes time to break in too. But I think you also are ignoring what the Zegama 2 was built for. If you are going to run super technical terrain, you shouldn't be in a high max cushion shoe. You should be in a Kjerag or something similar -- super responsive and great ground feel. The Zegama 2 is for putting in lots of miles and working on your endurance, on mellower terrain. For that, it works exceptionally well and I cannot think of any shoe that I have tried that is even close to as good as the Zegama 2 -- it has a remarkably wonderful fit and feels so darn comfortable.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally agree with you Christopher when it comes to the upper. It fits my foot like a glove and I find it comfortable, like I said in the video. Nike said on their website that Zegama 2 is designed for running high ridges and jagged rocks, not just flat trails. Also have you run them in wet conditions? The upper really doesn’t perform well in the wet, it’s terrible! I’ve run in a lot of trail shoes over the years and I’ve tried many cushioned trail shoes that are just as comfortable underfoot as the Zegama 2 but they’re a lot more stable on tech trails 👍
      Like I said in the video, shoe choice is such a personal thing and what doesn’t work well for me, might be great for someone else and this prove what I was saying. Thanks for watching 🙏🙂

      @@Run4Adventure Where I live, it rains a lot. It is okay in the wet and for stream crossings. It isn't something I would wear if I was going to be running in heavy, heavy rain conditions though or with lots of water crossings. I'm not going to name names, but other shoes that are max cushion, I find run awful -- either squishy or just not very smooth. I've accepted the fact that I simply will need different shoes for different outings/running goals.
      I totally agree about Nike's PR work. The Zegama 2 is NOT the Ultrafly Trail -- and that description is more appropriate for the Ultrafly Trail.

      @@Run4Adventure Ha! Actually, I'm not a Nike fan, as they only recently started using Vibram, and I cannot imagine running in anything that doesn't have Vibram! I only like the Zegama 2. I've run in Norda (yuck -- not a fun run), Hoka (speedgoat, mafate, etc.), Speedland (vastly overrated imho), Brooks (Caldera), Salomon, and Nnormal. I only recently decided to try the Zegama 2 because I needed a max cushion shoe for longer workouts and runs and nothing max cushion worked very well for me. I've liked it a lot more than I ever expected -- a surprise honestly. My favorite shoe is probably the Kjerag, but I cannot run in that shoe full time. I look forward to trying the Hoka Tecton x 3 -- and maybe that one will make me happy.

    The Zegama 2 and the Trailfly Speed definitely has it's audience, but the product description is misleading. The Zegama 2 could be a great choice for many runners for long distance, non technical trails. The Trailfly Speed doesn't inspire speed at all with it's weight but it will come in two width options which is a plus in my eye and could be a great shoe for runners who train in minimalist/barefoot shoes but would like some protection from time to time or for race day. No comment on the Scott.

    I totally agree on the first Zegama. It was terrible. So unstable, firm and a very bad fit. Uncharacteristic for a Nike trail shoe cause they tend to have a very nice fit for me. The biggest disappointment for me is the Inov8 MudTalon. It's so unstable and dangerous for your ankles. I think it has to do with the width. The wide version is simply too wide and it makes the shoe very unstable. The Speed is brilliant but the regular one is very bad

    It's been the Saucony Xudos 3. What a terrible shoe. I picked it up for the spine challenger north this year. My god what a terrible choice of shoe that didnt perform on anything.
    The show felt clunky, the wide forefoot was not good underfoot and had me rolling twice, the midsole has as much give as a flattened cardboard box, the grip is not good at all and much much worse on wet slabs. It has zero energy return or flexibility, and I felt everything through the rock plate unfortunately. 2 good points are, it drains when wet and the rocker is decent, which is lucky as it gives no bounce or return at all. I swapped them out for my g300's and what a difference in comfort and rerun I got. This was such a shame.
