Since this is a classroom series, its only fitting to end with someone who not only became Wales's first black headmaster but was also awarded an MBE for services to education and community life. Betty Campbell was born in Butetown, Cardiff, in 1934. She was a bright student in her class and dreamed of becoming a teacher, but the journey would not be accessible due to racial discrimination. Find out more in today's video!
We are also working with her family and the Welsh Biography to create an article to shed more light on who Betty Campbell was and how she changed the narrative surrounding being a black teacher.

Hi All! thank you all for watching this video. It was brought to my attention that i made some errors which i wanted to clarify as we always want to make sure we are as accurate as possible.
    1) Betty passed away in 2017, not 2007. I had written this in the script but read it incorrectly
    2) Betty was a Head Teacher not Headmaster. There was a point in the video where I misspoke
We always try to be as accurate as possible, but if you have any corrections then make sure to comment below.

I was a pupil at mount Stuart from 1975-1980 when she was head mistress..
She did a great job with her ambition and a heroine to the community as far back as I can remember

The statue looks nothing like her?
Quite an eyesore too large and the features are too masculine.

She truly was and so many of the children she was around are a lot better off because of her efforts.

How is it a landmark in black history than a black woman got a job as a headteacher?
