I went to two prep schools in the 1970s--a boarding school in Wiltshire and a day school in Oxfordshire--and what they inculcate in boys (and girls) is an acceptance of eccentricity--an encouragement of it, indeed. Also, the curriculum differs from the state system; I was learning Latin at 8 and been thrilled by the Greek myths. I would argue, however, that ALL prep boarding schools be banned. They are very very damaging to a child's emotional development. If you don't believe me, read A Very Private School, Charles Spencer's recent--and superb-- memoir of his dreadful time at Maidwell School. It is a must read. Day schools: great! Boarding...never.
