    As a Spaniard, I’m so excited to see this video! I love how respectful Grace is and how she takes the time to research the country and culture. I appreciate how hard she tries to make things right.
    Yes, she got the paella wrong, but to be fair a lot of Spanish people get it wrong as well! The most important thing is that she had fun making this video and enjoyed the food ☺️

      I haven't eaten paella often, but the best - indeed the only one I truly enjoyed - was made by a Catalan friend in his apartment at Tarragona. He showed me how to make it; he also invited friends of his to join us, and I think those aspects of it were what made it so great beyond itself: the authentic ingredients and cookware, on Spanish territory, eaten from the centre of the table by a group of people.

    In Spain we have this word "sobremesa" - literally translates as "over the table" - which refers to they time you spend sat down at the table after a meal: relaxing, chatting, enjoying time with others, maybe having coffee too or a shot of some type of digestive liquor ...

  • @silviatoribiocamunas9983

    It is actually weird that the recipe said to let the potatoes and the eggs chill! We usually pour it into the pan immediately after adding the potatoes. Also adding onion to the tortilla is one of the most controversial topics in Spain, people hate it or love it and the debate never seems to end (onion team always btw). Love your videos

    • @lizziegfunk
      @lizziegfunk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes I found the whole tortilla recipe very different from how my Abuela makes it. We do onions everytime, slice the potatoes much thicker, everything goes back in the pan straight away with some olive oil. Our household debate is always: tortilla hot or room temp. My husband insists it's better once it cools down but I like it hot from the pan😁

    • @silgova
      @silgova 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I allways let the eggs and potatoes (and onion!) sit together for a while, it makes the tortilla creamier and tastier. If you like your tortilla well cooked i suppose it's less important, but if you like it "runny" you should do it.

    • @lizziegfunk

    Hi Grace! As a spaniard and fan of yours I can truly say I enjoyed this so much. I really appreciate your effort in trying to integrate the culture aspect of eating into these videos. Your breakfast was 10/10, lunch was actually really nice to see you cook. As you mentioned, chorizo isnt typicaly in paella, but there are so many versions of it it wouldnt shock anyone, you even made the broth and put the saffron!! Its very typical in the winter to go for a merienda of “Chocolate con Churros” although not many people cook them at home. The tortilla looked really good, we only let it chill for about 2-5minutes and cook it less to have the egg more runny, again everyone has their one version. And yes! We do usually have bread with olive oil and fruit and coffee for dessert, I think you did an amazinf job ♥️

    So excited she tried Spanish food! Just FYI (not as a criticism but more as info), you definitely are not supposed to put chorizo in paella or really to put it in a dish with seafood. The seafood is nice a fresh so you don't want to camouflage the taste with strong chorizo. The churros looked bomb but we don't put cinnamon and we don't have a sauce with them, we have a super thick hot chocolate instead, in which you dip the churros. For the tortilla, most people don't cut the potato in thin slices but thick ones or cubes and we absolutely do not let it rest, it goes straight back in the pan. It is indeed also thicker. The gazpacho should also be a bit thinner and redder so more tomato, less of the other stuff, definitely nothing cooked, all goes in raw. Hope this is useful to anyone who wants to give these recipes a go and who want to try to make it "more authentic" (not that that matters all that much).

    Hi grace! Im from Spain and id just like to give you a few tips!
    1. The tomato toast is usually blended tomato not just tomato rubbed on toast. And usually pared with olive oil salt and cheese slices. (At least where im from) Alicante spain.
    2. We usually drink coffee for breakfast but we also have fresh orange juice most of the time.
    3. Seafood paella is very big but we don’t usually eat the seafood with chicken and chorizo. We also have chicken and rabbit paellas.
    But chorizo is not very heard of, i see you mention that anyway😊 i love your videos and i have been watching you for a few years, hope this helps you a little❣️ also we usually eat out churros with hot chocolate but its much thicker than normal😊

    Where I'm from, paella does have chorizo! It's very different depending on the part of Spain 💜 I've never seen parsley on top of paella though 😂 I guess that's a fancy thing

    OMG I studied abroad in Spain for a semester and tortilla de patata was my favorite! My host mom made awesome paella and every lunch we would have soup/salad, bread, a main dish, and then a piece of fruit for dessert. I lived in Granada and they are obsessed with ham; like families buy whole legs of pigs and eat off it for weeks. Also, breakfast was usually really small, like toast or yogurt with tea so on my way to school, I would buy a demi baguette or pain au chocolat to snack on. Churros there were so good and come with really thick "drinking" chocolate!

    As a Spaniard, I got so excited when I saw you were eating Spanish food for a day! Thanks for trying to follow the recipes just as they were written down. Yes, it's true that paella does not have chorizo in it, but every place in Spain does it different and at least it looks good, I'm happy you and your family enjoyed it so much (next time try and substitute the peppers for red ones and cut them in longer strips rather than in square bits. Also you can use ñora peppers for the base, it makes such a difference!)
    Would love to watch another one of these videos, there's so much to try in Spain. Much love♡

    Great effort. Thanks for sharing. Couple of tips for next time:
    - Tortilla: Use a smaller pan for the tortilla and pre heat it well before pouring the mix into the pan.
    - Gazpacho. Don't cook the ingredients. Just blend them.
    - Patella: I'm not a purist, so not commenting on the ingredients, but try not to stir it once the rice and stock are together. Opposite of what you would do with an Italian risotto. Some people add the stock before the rice, some people after. Also try to find a flatter pan or get a paella pan if cooking it often.
    - churros. They did look amazing, but they are normally breakfast thing

    for the pan con tomate (pa amb tomaquet) where I live - trick for the tomatoes is to slice across the equator, rather than pole the pole if that makes sense.

    I completely understand you on the coffee front. It's not just that it's oily, as if it were brewed in an unwashed skillet. It's also that it immediately and violently offends my lower digestive tract.
