As a native speaker, it makes me realise how difficult it is to become fluent in everyday English. The idiom varies so much from place to place, as do the accents..... 's hard innit? 😀

English is very easy. The problem is that native speakers don't pronounce words well, especially when talking about Americans. They pronounce words as if something in your mouth is preventing you from speaking.

I was taught English in school from age 7, but English is not an official language in my country, so as you may expect, it was treated as a second language (because for everyone, it actually was). And during my 11 years of formal English studies, never have I once heard the rule about avoiding the usage of prepositions at the end of sentences; frankly, we were taught that way to begin with (like right here)

I have experienced, that a some series of school books have different ways to teach. When I was starting to learn, we were taught whole phrases first and learned the short forms later (I will not learn. - I won't learn.)
Today they already start with the short forms, but then it's sometimes harder to learn I think...🤔

I adore your British accent, it’s the one I use in class ( I’ve been listening to British music since my early teenage years and I was in Brighton for my training course for two months so Ive had the accent in the genes 😅) and my students go “your accent is different “ as they’re used to hear American accent from previous teachers or English with no connected speech nor contractions. Keep the superb work.

I'm Brazilian, and i decided to learn English by myself and, it took me some good 5 years to figure it out all that "spoken English" aspect of conversations, i think it's very important to understand tha in order to express your thoughts properly in English because, when you don't, it's amazing how much people look at you asking themselves "omg, where did you came from, 1985?😂", and that can work against you on a conversation. First channel that i see this aspect of the language being even talked about, just recommend your channel to one of my friends trying to learn the language as weel, your channel is great! Thanks for the knowledge

Great video! As a Swede I was taught English at school from an early age, yet I've always found it difficult to understand native English speakers. That was until I realised that I was always thinking Swedish when listening to English people talking, like translating every word I hear to Swedish to understand what was said. So I stopped doing that and instead started to think English instead, listening with an English ear and not with a Swedish ear, and in that way I could understand native English speakers way much better!

    • @catallystic

one of the main reasons that discourage me from studying English and trying to get better at speaking it is to think that no matter how much I study, I’ll never be able to talk as fast as a native-English speaker. that way, there would be no chance I could compete with someone who has English as their mother language for a job or something.
have you ever thought that way? if so, how did you send this horrible conception of incapacity away?

That's great that you've been able to improve your English by thinking in English. Currently I'm trying to learn French, and I want to get to the level where I can think in French without translating to English (I have yet to get there though).
I find your English impressive, I imagine you worked hard to get to the point you're now at. Your English is so good, I want to offer one little correction to a phrase you used. You said at the end "way much better," which sounds kinda funny to English ears. You can say "way better," or you can say "much better," but not "way much better." Those two words "way" and "much" can't be put together like that.
Like I said before, your English is amazing, I hope to attain that same level in a second language some day. Cheers!

@@ozmorfgamereviews Thanks a millon, for your answer and for correcting my errors! Much appreciated!
I've studied French too, actually. Also in school. But only for three years though, and I've never been so into being fluent in French (even if that would be great as well!).
Of course, the method I used to understand English better demands that you already know enough of the language you wish to improve. But I still believe that at least one of the keys to learn and "get" a language quicker is to think the language while listening to it, and not your native tongue. To me, when trying it, it was a mindblowing experience! I thought about it, and tried it by watching an UK talk show clip on youtube, and I was ashtonished how my English improved when I "switched off" Swedish in my brain and switched on English!
Thanks again for your message, credit and boost, and I wish to you good luck with your French studies! I hope the technique I used may help you somehow. Cheers!

@@catallystic I'm sorry if I came across as harsh towards you in my first response. I was in a hurry and read your message too quick and answered it even quicker! Now, I see I must've seemed quite obnoxious. Not my intention at all. My apologies!
But anyway, try the method I described and I can assure you that you'll notice positive differences! And the more you practise by "switching off" your native tongue and switch on English when eg. watching an English TV show or Film, the quicker you will see a change in your understanding of the English language. At least, that worked for me!
About competing with native English speakers when it comes to work opportunities, I would say - without living in any native English speaking country - that it may depend on what profession you wish to have. But as I understand, many companies really do appreciate diversites in their organisations, weather different backgrounds and dialects. Many companies of today see it as a strength to reflect the present society within their organisation - and since our society today is global, well, then there you go! So maybe that's where you'll may find your strength where your "weakness" may in fact be your edge! And I really do believe your English is more than good enough already if you wish to try applying for a job in a native English speaking country!
      Good luck! Cheers!

I'm used to everything here, but slangs. However, the toughest thing about hearing is related to this, although being a more broad subject:
    1) How can 1 recover himself after not understanding a word?
Until a decade ago, after not recognizing a word, I used to get lost for the rest of the phrase. I only got recovered once I understood that the phrase had finished. I got better on this when I lowered my expectations about the "I must connect all sounds" chore.
I guess something alike happens to MMA fighters. Since it's a sport that 1 can finish a fight without getting hit, some fighters try too hard to never get punched. So when it happens, they got so stressed, that their brain shut them off, making them fall likely at the 1st hit. While those who accepted that they may eventually get hit, keep awakened on the entire fight, even when punched several times.
    2) How to understand how likely an unknown word may be written, in order to isolate it, and thus not getting lost on the rest?
I guess this only improves by knowing "fonemas" _(Google Translator please help me: phonemes)_ .

Fun fact: replace 'english' with 'french' and you'll find out this whole video also applies to english natives learning French. And I suspect this would apply to any examples.
You're spot on Lucy, the begining of the voyage is when one actually dives in for real. And I'm not refering to globish, but rather English.

I studied in a course in my town and finished in 2016, since then it's been difficult to find someone to talk in English, altough I teach one or two children in a year. I wish I had found your channel long ago.Well, your tips about not finishing a phrase with prepositions were so valeable, because in the course where I studied they didn't teach such thing which's why I tend to finish some sentences with prepositions like: who do you work with? Thanks to you I know I must say: with whom do you work? But I also know it's rare to see someone saying that perfect and correct English. Everytime I watch TV series see this kinda informal use.
