  • It has been a very long road to bring this 1968 Case 580CK tractor's 188 diesel engine back to life. This tractor sat abandoned in the bush for more than 15 years before I brought it home to begin the work of bringing it back to life. There have been many long days involved just to get the engine to a point where it could start including a full rebuilding of the injection pump. But starting issues have prevailed. A viewer's recent tip, however, may have solved the fuel starvation issue. Let's dig into the fuel pressure regulator and then try to start this engine. If it starts today, it will be the first time the engine has run for almost 20 years! Let's begin....Please Subscribe to my channel. Thanks! Sounds like another project similar to this one! Does the engine run? I had trouble getting this one to start after it sat with old diesel in it for 15 years! Had to clean out the injection pump (videos on this channel). Best wishes with your 580CK and greetings from British Columbia, Canada!

      @@EverydayProjects When I bought mine the engine and backhoe ran perfect, but it would leak all 5 gal. of transmission oil out the fly wheel bell housing each night and it always was sluggish when driving. Eventually it quit moving. It turned out that a half moon key got sucked up into the shuttle shift transmission pump along with tons of old paper gasket material, because the suction screen had a hole in it. It snapped the input shaft on the pump. I paid the machine shop $90 to fix the shaft and installed it, but I had trouble getting the dashboard to fit back on, so that is where I am. It took me 3 years just to get the cab off. What a nightmare. I will never put the cab back on it. The cab had to be removed, so I could remove the steering column, because the steering column sits on top of the transmission pump cover.

      It has been a long road to this point. So many things must operate in synch for any engine to run. The end cover pressure regulator was definitely the issue holding me back. It was only possible with the contribution of a fellow TH-camr who suggested I look at the regulator. It is an amazing community that I’m glad to participate in. Lots more to do on this old 580CK but having the engine finally run is a big leap forward. Thanks for your support !😊

      It has been a long Road but it FINALLY STARTED!! There remains many things to fix but the fact that the engines runs makes the other things less daunting. Next will be to fix or replace that leaking fuel line to #2 cylinder. All the best, Marc. Je vous souhaite un bon weekend!

    I have a backhoe exactly like that. When I run it out of fuel I crack all 4 of the injectors and crank it till I get fuel squirting from the fittings. If there is ANY air in any line it won't run.

    Well, that same little piston was really stuck in mine. I ran it through the sonic cleaner several times, but it remained really stuck. I ened up using a well fitting shaft to drive it out of it's cylinder. Just getting that entire cylinder and piston was an ordeal, but finally got it. I cleaned the cylinder really well, very smooth and did the same to the piston, but it does not slide back and forth when I shake it as you did. It does slide extremely smooth inside the cyliner thst it rides in, but does more with just bare pushing it. Thanks for that video, that really saved me a lot of troubleas the tractor is 50 miles from where I live, so that would be a heck of a drive. Thanks again, will keep you updated.

      Music to me ears to finally hear this old engine kick back to life. This tractor was destined for the scrap metal yard when I decided to buy it in 2019. A few more weeks and the owner of the property, where the tractor sat uncovered in a field for more than 15 years, would have called the scrap metal people to come get the tractor and begin the process of dismantling and recycling it. It was a risk to invest any time at all or spend 😂even a Sudbury nickel into this thing, but I thought there may be a chance. Now, with the engine running, it opens the door to spend more Sudbury nickels on it. Yikes!! Thanks for watching, Doug.

    Have you looked into the tank, mine 580CK has a ton of sludge in the tank. That sump that is on the bottom of the fuel tank I imagine is full of sludge as well. Will have to tackle that here soon, once I even get my pump put back together. Love the video, very detailed and I to had not removed that plug, all the little piston and all is stuck .Will put Seafoam in my sonic cleaner an run it for a bit.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I removed the tank last year and patched leaks with JB Weld. While out, I cleaned the inside with dish soap and hot water. It was gummed up really bad. Here's the video I made when I upgraded the filter. th-cam.com/video/eoKXc6LXHgM/w-d-xo.html
      I just installed the single base for now but need to get a secondary on there soon, now that the engine is a go. I bought most everything from Amazon: WIX Spin-on Filter base # 24770. Baldwin spin on filter (#1212 with a drain for now). The rest of the stuff (push on fuel hose 3/8" and fittings and ball valve) from a local diesel repair shop and hardware store, the diesel shop was the place to go for the push on hose and brass fittings, they deal with this stuff all the time. All the best, Michael. Let me know how you make out or if you have any more questions. Cheers!

      I told you it was going to be special!! Like you mentioned before, it DID belch smoke like a Battleship laying down a smokescreen, Ha Ha
      It will take some running before I expect the smoke to clear at all. That pressure regulator was holding back the fuel all along. granted, the pump was full of gum and varnish too but this regulator clean out was the final hurtle!!

    • @heliarche
      @heliarche ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverydayProjects No doubt. There's oil in the cylinders, it hasn't run in years and the rings might need to limber up for a while. It's probably blowing out seafoam and anything else you put in there to make it easier to wake it up. Like an old monster coming out of a decades long sleep, gonna take it a while to clear it's throat. Seemed like it really teased you before it got fuel up. Have you tried to move it at all? Even an inch just to see if the drive train might be OK? Even without hydraulics that thing is going to be a bull! 1st gear low range, you can get out and crawl faster. High gear, high range, forget it. You'd better be on the flats. That's a travel gear only at least for mine.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@heliarche Haven't tried to move it. I have to hook up the alternator/fan/belt/water pump drive before I can risk any lengthy runs. I cannot chance overheating the engine. Then I'll try to see if it'll move forward and back. It will be good to have an alternator charging the battery because this one way street of discharging a battery to crank and then having to charge the battery is getting really old--fast. I have to hook up the steering too, and change the torque tube hydraulic fluid because there is still some traced of water in there. Then, and only then will I get to the boom, bucket and main pump hydraulics. A long road ahead yet. Image that this was the first run in almost 20 years!! No wonder it has blue smoke. Perhaps it'll clear. I'm going to keep using Seafoam in the fuel too. It is recommended to preserve diesel and keep things running free. Also, it can go into the crankcase oil too (1/2 can to 6 quarts of oil) to keep the oil passages free and clean.

    • @heliarche
      @heliarche ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverydayProjects Ok I gotcha there. Yea make sure that sucker is at least cooling properly. Charging the battery would be nice as well! You might have to run it a while and coax the clutch and shifters a while before it actually wants to even try. Hopefully that aspect won't put up such a fight as fueling did. Hopefully you can at least have it mobile with no more big hurdles. Once you get into the hydraulics, might be a few popped lines. You're going to want to go to your Harbor freight equivalent, I think Princess Auto(?) and get the big 3/4" drive sockets if you don't have any. If the flexible line for that boom up/down cylinder has any sort of dry rot, change it while you have the chance. You're going to want to separate the hoe from the machine. If yours is set up like mine it's not as intimidating as it sounds. It's a job and you take your time with it, but it's not horrible. Looks like on yours the tension rod nuts are fairly easy access too.

      It was a surprise for me too. I was starting to make plans to drag the tractor out to the roadside and plant flowers in it but this fix extended its life! I started to see more fuel at the injectors right after the pressure regulator clean out.The Seafoam treatment straight into the pump suction didn't hurt either. As is so often the case on TH-cam, a viewer made a suggestion that was bang-on. The fellow TH-camr (Adam) emailed me from Massachusetts with the suggestion to clean out the regulator. I’ve got a 580CK I just hooked up a recently charged battery to, I instantly hear the accessory clicks come on by itself and can’t start it. A wire coming going to the alternator does a small jerk and jump every click. Won’t even attempt to turn over I can’t even find a diagram

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It sounds like a battery issue even though you have a fully-charged one. The wire from the alternator is the charging wire (or the one that goes to the ammeter). You should be able to disconnect that wire if it is a concern while starting the engine. It has nothing to do with the starter turning the engine. There may be an issue with the starter solenoid. They often click when they begin to fail. Let me know if you need any help, I'll help if I can. Maybe I have a diagram I have the original 58ck Manual.

    Hi guy, impressive. Thanks for your videos, it encourages the diy people like me.
    I have a 580 CK from 1968, fuel pump is giving me awful headaches : it starts, but the foot throttle is not working well. It varies only after a delay of seconds (up or down, same).
    I suspect a bleeding issue, I understood it's anightmare. But I can't find any information about the procedure, how to bleed this f***** pump.
    Any idea please ?
    thanks alot

      This one is a 1968 too. I took the injection pump apart and put a kit into it. It took me a few tries to get everything right but this video shows that it worked. My tractor had been abandoned and left outside for about 15 years with fuel in it. The diesel gummed up everything and the pump would not pass fuel through it. I filmed most of this stuff and posted it to my channel. If you look on my channel, there is a tab at the top titled "playlists" In there are all the tractor videos in one folder. I hope they can be of some help. If you need any tips or assistance, just post it here and I'll answer to the best of my ability. Plus it'll be good to know how you make out with it.

      Hi@@EverydayProjects ,
      in case it would help somebody :
      finally my pump issue has been solved : i managed to unscrew a little bit the screw that we see at 2:20, put some additional pressure in the system and finally some air and gazole passed along the screw.
      after restarting it was improving a little bit the response time, insisted a lot and then the throttle finally works ok or nearly.
      I think I had air bubble at the level of the pressure regulator AND a piston locked by rust. Bleeding the air allowed the gazole to pass through and lubricate.
      It was my 2 cents' contribution.
      Now I have another issue, brake only on right side. Maybe linked to oil level in the transmission ?

    Stupid question maybe but my uncle has a backhoe that is just like this and it won’t start, where is the spark on this motor?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are two different engines in these. One is a gasoline engine and the other is diesel. Mine is diesel that ignites the fuel by high compression. A gasoline engine runs at much lower compression in the cylinder and the gas is ignited with spark plugs. If it’s a diese engine, it is important to be able to crank the engine fast to get high compression. Sometimes, if the battery is low they won’t start. Also, the fuel system must be clean. A gasoline engine does not have to spin as fast to start. Check which kind of engine it is and go through checks of all the components. On a gas engine, make sure the gas is fresh and the spark plugs and wires are in good condition. On a diesel, the fuel must be clean and the battery very strong. Good luck and best wishes.
