- Hey guys! In this video we head on over to Amplaz (Ambarukmo Mall) and shop at Carrefour. Carrefour is a great place to shop for groceries in Yogyakarta, and you can even find some international products here. Julie buys tempe, which is a food made from soy beans, and makes tempe mendoan!

Original Tempe Mendoan from Purwokerto not crispy at all. You can eat it using dipping (Cabai rawit, chop/slice thin fresh garlic, sweet soy sauce, mix it together add a little water)
mendoan yang asli memang seharusnya gak crispy. sesuai dengan asal katanya 'mendo' yang artinya setengah matang. tapi kalo saya pribadi sih juga lebih seneng yang crispy. mendoan crispy + soto. mantab. .

I'm sorry to tell you that these are NOT tempe mendoan. The batter of tempe mendoan should NOT be crispy. What Julie made were just tempe with batter. The batter of tempe mendoan should be soggy, fluffy and appears white on the outside not brown. If you don't believe me, type "tempe mendoan" on youtube or google search box and you'll understand right away...

First of all, I've been subscribing for a while and this is what I love so much about your channel: this positive take on daily Indonesian life, somehow it's soothing to watch. Second, I love how your teen children are so polite and support the filming (or at least that's how it seems lol). Third, how on earth they manage to put together such impossible thin soy beans together before the mold builds up. I only know recently that Mendoan tempeh are individually wrapped, and already decided for such application since fermentation. Fourth, please bear some less nice way to comment on that Mendoan fry. Although indeed they are suppose to be limp - as the name mendo suggest. Fifth, since you also try to explain life in Indonesia to foreigners, I wonder how's the split between Indonesian / Foreigner audience. Thank you and keep it up!

You should try Mendoan batter with "kencur". Typically on the soft, not crispy mendoan. Kencur is a root spice you can easily get in any supermarket.

i think tempe mendoan should be fried half cooked. because mendoan comes from the word "mendo" which means in Indonesian half-cooked/half-baked or mushy. CMIIW

Julie, if you buy tempe from the traditional market, you can usually ask the Mas/Abang/the seller to slice it thin for you. Watching your video makes me really miss eating tempe ahahahah!!!

I want the recipes for the Tempe mendoan please. I was born in Singapore but both my parents are originally from Bawean Island, Indonesia. Tempe goreng is my absolute favourite and fortunately it is also a daily staple in our household. My mom would normally seasoned the Tempe with a turmeric and sea salt paste before frying it.

I have some tips for buying original movies/games.
1. For DVD movie it's usually cost around ~Rp139rb while VCD around ~Rp35rb-50rb and look out for the tax sticker.
2. They don't use thin package for videogames it's usually thicker. Except for game code they usually sell it using card.
3. Go to the authorized store, for example "Tara CD Store" but sadly they are no longer available. Instead, find a bigger store. Some bookstore like Gramedia usually sell original movies and videogames.
