I pretty much had this very exact setup last year when I rented out a room. The crappy sterilite 'dresser' and storage bin included haha. And mattress on the floor is fine. Don't let anyone guilt trip you otherwise!

I’ve had my mattress on the floor for 2 years now and I like it a lot. I too have been called dirty for having it like that but I don’t care, it works for me. Your room looks so calming. I’ve just started my minimalist journey and I’m in the process of decluttering. I want and need my room to look as calming as yours does.

I find that as I reduce things I fill the space with more living type things. For me this is using woods instead of plastics, replacing decor with plants, and incorporating more greens than any other color (more blacks and grays in clothes).

Hi Nicholas, if I may suggest an idea, you can hang your mirror inside the closet if the space permits. That way it can still serve its purpose without being an additional item in your bedroom. If this doesn't workout, then you get to try something else.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with floor sleeping. :) As a rather new minimalist myself I personally enjoy low platform beds and Japandi/wabi sabi style. It keeps you well grounded. If I may give some advice, a tatami mat will help with airflow and reduce the risk of mold and help to lower dust mites. :) I’m happy to be newly subscribed.

I also tried going to route of a shikibuton (Japanese bed). While I really liked the idea and it worked well for me, I found out eventually it is quite difficult in humid climates. I'm in Seattle. It's imperative to have tatami mat underneath, and it requires constant flipping and drying. Hanging in the sun is essential, and if you don't have a space to do that, don't bother with a shikibuton. I ended up having to throw mine out because it molded.

Having less 'stuff' certainly helps improve air flow and energy flow. Having less things to clean and think about also makes life much simpler. But in truth, it is only our attachment to stuff that causes us anxiety and worry. You could live in the most extravagantly furnished palace, full of priceless art and antiquities, and be completely at peace - by not caring at all if any or all or it was destroyed or stolen. You can enjoy beauty without needing to possess it

I intentionally got rid of a frame for my Bed and had the mattress on the floor. But my sister and her husband thought it was a bad idea, so they bought me a new bed complete with frame .

Agreed. It is important to realise that aspects of Minamalism push against societal norms. I sleep on a shikibuton and tatami mat. Would never go back to a bed frame. Not sure why it resonates so much. Maybe its primal like sitting around a camp fire.

I’d love using a mattress on the floor, but I’d rather it had some airflow below it. So, I’m going to get some kind of base for my mattress. It doesn’t need to be too high, and I hope it’ll still be practical enough for me to move my bed often to clean underneath it.

Have you looked into a Shikibuton? That is a Japanese floor bed. It is a futon. In Japan, no one has a bed bed like we have in America. I am going to get one. It is very minimalist. Can fold up when not in use.

I want to embrace minimalism, but I don't want to get rid of all of my books, and I have a lot of them. And I know I can just get digital books these days, but real books feel so nice and is just a better reading experience.... but they cause a lot of clutter :(
