  • In this video, Stephanie Smooke Praw, MD, an endocrinologist at the UCLA Endocrine Center, explains the signs of hypothyroidism. This is a condition caused by not having enough thyroid hormone.
The thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, produces hormones that help control certain functions in the body. Sometimes the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones. This causes symptoms like feeling more tired or sluggish than usual, sensitivity to cold, constipation or difficulty having a bowel movement, dry skin, hair loss, and weight gain even with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
If you think you might have hypothyroidism, schedule an appointment with your doctor.

I’ve been dealing with really bad anxiety for a few years. I’m on Zoloft now. It worked for 2 years but now doesn’t seem to be effective. I’m shaking all day. I’m on edge and overwhelmed, constipated. My left ankle has been swollen for a year and I don’t know how. And my cholesterol is high. I’ve also gained 25 pounds over the last couple years. I just got my blood work done at my general practitioner and my thyroid levels were still within the range of green which is “normal.” But they all trended to the far left. My T4 and TSH were all to the left towards the edge of the green. I’m gonna go to the endocrinologist next and get their opinion. I honestly hope that they can help me in some way as apposed to going up on my Zoloft.

She would need a blood test first. You might also need to visit a gastroenterologist. Good luck!
