Hi if you want to just replace the default Micro SD card with a new one, (i have flash Radiomaster TX16s Multi Protocol Module in EdgeTX to the latest but in the default SD card), you just copy the files from the old SD card to the new one? And what about the content of the second window that always pop up when you plug the TX on the pc?
As a prudent person I always backup my SD card when I make any changes. I have several backup folders. Can I simply copy and paste the backup contents to my new SD card?
Great set of Tutorials. One suggestion. It is very (!) difficult to see/read the screens. Perhaps you could focus only on the window where the action is? Cheers
Somehow I always come back at your tutorials:) I do have question about .bin files. I just downloaded from the internet a Model15.bin. Now I already have Model15.bin in my model folder. Can I just rename the file to Model16.bin or any number, would that work?
With all the info I have been seeing about the SD card bricking the radio permanently and how frequently it happens, it seems more like a must do and not an upgrade.
Whenever you are showing your desktop computer content: The important details you are showing us are hard to see, a bit blurry and too small. (Even when in full-screen mode on a big monitor and 1080p, with my best eyeglasses!) Can you please expand your screen to fill the whole TH-cam window, and expand the app window to fill your whole desktop screen? You only need to show the Tx once in a while, so it could briefly overlap the screen at those moments, then go away. Same goes for your outline overviews at the upper left. THANKS!! Such excellent tutorials!
Steve, Thanks for the comment. This video was the first attempt at this format and I realized the same thing and fixed it by setting a much easier to read resolution. If you check out the Flight Modes video I just posted, you'll see that I: 1) Decreased the resolution, 2) Put the App in Full Screen mode, 3) Zoomed in on the app for most of the video. I'm doing a little experimentation with delivering this type of content and I'm still sharpening the saw. Apologize that you guys have to deal with the learning on my part.
Download Treesize Free for Windows, put your SD card in the computer and find out what's taking up all your space. A complete 100% installation of EdgeTX takes about 25MB with sounds. The radio ships with a 256MB card. So the default install takes about 10% of the available space which means you found some creative way to fill it up.
@RCVideoReviews I plugged in my radio master boxer Elrs to my computer and unplugged it not realizing it would mess it up and now there is nothing on the tools page on my radio. I cannot figure out how to fix this. If you have any way of doing so would be greatly appreciated.
I have followed your directions to the letter, but my laptop keeps saying "No radio discovered", but it shows all of the files on the radio. It is only in OpenTX companion when I plug the radio in to my computer when it says no radio. What am I doing wrong? I'm a noobie to these new computer radios Please HELP ME: I'M DROWNING !😭😱
So how do you handle a completely new radio? This is my first radio and I am very new to FPV and I am trying to follow these instructions step by step. and I am not sure I am doing this correctly. I need someone to walk me thru this!
Thank you for the good walkthrough. I noticed that on your first card (card#1) you had a folder called crossfire. That one didnt exist on the sdcard content zipfile that you downloaded. That mght be an issue?
Followed step by step and still wont work. Keep getting "STORAGE WARNING", Bad radio data , Press any key. so frustrating. Is there a max size sdcard and going above that causes problems?
It will recognize 32GB natively, but there's no point in going that large. You also want to make sure to use 4k allocation size on format to avoid stuttering.
32gb is the biggest partition the radio can read. There's NO REASON to go bigger than 2gb. Whatever you do, make sure you format with fat32 and 4k allocation size.
Please please help. My new TX16s arrived this morning. I removed the new sd card to see what memory it had in it and on trying to reinsert it, it pinged out never to be seen again. Is this why they were called " jumper " radios? Seriously I am on a big downer now as my screen reads NO SD CARD. Does the sd card hold the firmware? If it does, I need to buy a new card, go into Open Tx and download new firmware? What size if card will be good to go? My first time with open tx and I have lost the new sd card. What a nerd!!!! What do I do? Peter
This is easy to fix. Grab any SD card you have smaller than 32gb. Format it Fat32 with 4k allocation size. You'll need to find out what version of OpenTX you're running. Hit the System Button and go to Information. You'll see something like 2.3.xx When you know your version number, go here: www.open-tx.org/downloads Click on you version number On the resultant page, scroll down to "SD Card Content" Click on "opentx-tx16s" You'll see a list of SD Card ZIP Files. Make note of the v000xx numbers. Download one zip file, unzip it to your new SD card. When you boot up, OpenTX may complain about version number. It might say something like, "Expected v00035" Go back to that download page and get v00035 of the zip file. Erase the sd card, unzip v00035 to your sd card and you should be done. Don't panic, this is super easy to fix.
@@RCVideoReviews Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I will write down( note ) all of your content. I have searched all day for the card. The stupidest thing happened. I could not recall it actually pinging out so I thought.." I wonder if I missed the Sd card slot and it somehow ended up IN the tx? I opened it up, gave it a good shake and voila!.. The sd card fell out on my bed. So this does not happen again I have done a very simple mod. I have glued a piece of black plastic to the tx casing with plastic glue whicb now covers the gap and it is impossible now to miss the slot. If any one is going to fluff up the simplest operation it will be me. How stupid. Thank you so much for calming me down. I am looking forward to using open tx programme to record my own voice commands with a touch of humour to it... Also images of my own models. Peter
Can´t you just backup your old sd card and drag it to the new sd card when you have format it? Thanks for giving us these great tips, i woudn´t made it with out them.
I had an undocumented motive in this video to get people to start using Companion as it can handle all SD card management automatically when you learn how to use it correctly. It also minimizes errors/mistakes.
Any ideas how to fix a corrupt sound file on the card? I was trying to update the sound files, but I can't overwrite the old one because it's corrupted. I'd like to start fresh, or if there's a way to reformat the corrupted one I'll go that route. Suggestions?
If you want to start fresh, you should be able to use any number of disk management tools in your operating system (or aftermarket) to format the SD card. I don't know if I'd trust an SD card that is corrupted though. As cheap as these things are, may as well just get a new card.
Hi. 2 Rookie questions if I may. What is the largest SD card capacity you can install? Do you know what the max amount of models you can install on the TX16s or is this dependent on the SD card capacity? Cheers.
I believe 32gb is the largest partition size it recognizes. There is no max amount of models that I'm aware of. The model configuration files are very small. The stock contents with 40+ models takes about 150MB of storage.
It'll read up to 32gb, but that is massive overkill for this radio. A 2gb card is more than you'll ever need. Also, make sure to format with fat32 and 4k allocation size.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks, I was going to get a 2g card thinking it would have no problem taking it. Once I have it, I will follow your video on the formatting and then install Edge TX.
It depends on the radio. If it's a Horus, you might be able to do it. If it's a Taranis, no. Honestly, I would take the time to just backup/restore the models.
@@RCVideoReviews Thank. I started to watch that vid a while back but didn't get back to it. I have been watching so many videos my heads about to explode lol But I re watched this and its perfect!! everything worked out well.
Hello I get the boot did i boot when I plug in in BL mode. I don’t get the two screens to pop up. What do I do then? Redid 3 times but no two screens? J
When in BL mode and you connect a USB cable does the screen on the radio show "USB Connected"? If not, you have something mechanical going on. Change cables, change USB ports, try a different computer. In windows you need to hear the bong bong bong sound and the USB drive must be seen to be writeable.
Companion doesn’t show the screens. Windows does. And sometimes windows doesn’t pop them up. You can look in your file explorer and you should see the directory listing of your sd card there. If you can see it companion will be able to see it. If you can’t see your sd card in explorer companion can’t see it.
Is there a size limit as I had a 128Gb mico sd laying around, I formatted it in fat 32 then copied the sd contents from my original card to it, and I cannot send models and settings to it as it says it cannot find the Radio sd card. The computer sees the sd card when I plug it in to the computer after powering in boot loader mode but OpenTX can,t find it to download models and settings.
I've had varying results depending on the OTX/EdgeTX version I've used. One thing I know, anything 32g or less always works. Format with 4k allocation size to avoid read buffering/errors.
@@RCVideoReviews Thank You that worked but windows would not allow me a choice for 4k allocation size so I let it just do default size and it acts like normal with the new 32gb card in but it is just slow at popping up the folder when you choose USB Storage. Also what are your thoughts on using the Synchronize SD choice in the file menu of OpenTX? Also forgot to mention in other post I am using a RadioMaster TX16S Max
I just tried to update opentx to 2.3.10 but when i tried to empty the SD contents into the usb drive it said i don’t have enough space???? Do i just need a bigger sd? I’m using the 256mb
The 2.3.10 SD card contents are 129MB. Amber is 30MB. The stock card is 256MB. So all in it's about 160MB + MAYBE another 10MB in model/image data. You might want to find out what's taking up all that extra space. These radios do not need big SD cards. I added an 8GB card just because that's the smallest one I had available.
Yes. It only reads fat32. If exfat is your only option that means the card is too big. Partition it. But that makes managing on radio more complicated.
@@RCVideoReviews Just so I understand; you are telling me that the likely reason for why I cannot see any of the SD contents on my radiomaster TX12 (with the SD card inserted) is because the 128GB SD card I am using is too big to be formatted to fat32 ?
I’m saying huge cards like that don’t format in fat32 by default because that format is highly inefficient for big cards. That’s also a ludicrously large card for the radio. If you want the radio to read it you need a fat32 partition 32g or smaller.
@@RCVideoReviews that’s all I’m asking. I am new to this a in looking at the instruction manuals it did not specify what type of SD card to use. Or how to format it.
I have a question about The TX16S, Does a bigger SD card increase the boot time . I have a Lexar 4gb card. I have copied the entire contents of the RM TX16S sd card to it after a formatting . It takes the radio 40 seconds to boot at turn on. Will the way you do it work better or do I need a smaller chip.
@@RCVideoReviews was Slow formatted fat 32 and Allocated @ 4096. Something just isnt right with the SD card. Thanks for the Excelent content and the Quick reply ... What size did you use?
The 256MB card works fine. With a full install of OTX and the Amber sound pack it only consumed about 20MB or 1/10th the capacity of the card. That said, because I switch stuff around so much I usually wind up with a 2gb or 8gb card most of the time which is massive overkill.
@@RCVideoReviews I got how to use a 32GB card to replace the 256MB card without slow boot times. I format the 32GB card and partition the card with a 512GB volume named E and then copy the original to the to the new card . Boots as fast it used to do and now I have room for Logs ect ect

Did you format the SD card? What format did you use? Make sure it's FAT32. or FAT. If your PC can see it but your radio can't, that sounds like a format issue.
@@RCVideoReviews Thank you for the reply. Yes, I did format the card. The only option was Fat, not Fat 32. So maybe? It is a brand new Samsung 64 evo plus (only spare on hand). I can try a smaller class 10 card the next time I get to town.
@@randygrinter2800 64GB might be too big. I haven't looked at the size limit. Easy test: Make a 2gb partition on it, format fat32, put sd contents on the 2gb partition and see if it's recognized that way.
Just had the sd card glitch so took the dam thing out reformated and did the above and it works got my models back and radio settings all I had to do was recalibrate sticks even model bound as normal no rebind req! However I have a serrious question what are the rec numbers used for I dont assign any as I feel each radio setting is held with each model and I dont have any models with multiple recivers in them so what is the story with rec numbering is it req on a model with only one rx?
If you don't use Rx numbers, anytime you power an Rx and the Tx, the Tx will operate the Rx independent of the model selected. If you do use Rx numbers, the Tx will operate only if the matching model is selected. I have personally started flying a model with the wrong model selected. Fortunately, all the controls were close enough to the same allowing me to get the model back on the ground. I started numbering my Rxs with the TX16s.

I took it apart made sure the wires were all connected. then I smacked it(going off what one other guy did) and the flickering did stop. but then when I turned it on it had bad radio data and then when I tried to look at the sd card on the p.c it couldn't read it. all my pc drivers are up to date. reads all my other cards just fine. I followed along with your videos and a few others. got the firmware updated thru the companion. and now it turns on but still says sd card warning and somehow my sticks are switched around cause it also says throttle warning but it's not on the left throttle side. it's on the roll and pitch side, the right. I can go into the model setups and all functions seem to be there but my background and the tabs that are usually up top are just gone. and when I power down it's just a white screen that counts 4 dots and then turns off. no face or anything. same when powered on it doesn't say welcome to opentx or anything. idk what the heck happened and i can't seem to find any material anywhere on how to fix it. I feel I am able without having to send it back i just can't find an example.. any suggestions? maybe to a video or thread. I am not on Facebook or any other sites. just TH-cam. thanks for any help! also there is nothing to back up and I don't care about any previously saved settings/models. I just want it how it came from banggood. oh and my new sd card is 32gb.
Format the sd card. Copy sd card contents to it from OpenTx downloads. Your sticks are switched because it can’t read your radio setup from sd card and it’s defaulting to mode 1. You can change it to mode 2 in the system settings but don’t bother with that until you have it reading from your sd card. And stop smacking your electronics. That’s not the answer. You probably have a lose ribbon cable on your display panel.
@@RCVideoReviews holy cow it worked!! 🤘😲🤘 not that i didn't think you knew what you're doing. dude idk what I was doing wrong this past weekend.. and ya with the display panel, i opened it up but only checked the ribbon cables that were visible maybe there was more underneath everything.. it all seemed fine tho. ugh you're right, i shouldn't have smacked it. I tried this procedure, and didn't work for me. I'm on the current version 2.3.10, maybe that made a difference? I took my time making i did every step exactly with the video. Any ideas?
The SD card was a Scan Disk 128 GB. I formatted it in Windows and Windows 10 doesn't give you the option of Fat 32 or Fat 16, the only options are NTSF, or exFat which is the default. From what I've read exFat is a modern replacement for Fat32?
@@richsadler5686 I'd start there if I were you. Partition it to a 16GB drive and format with Fat32. Find an alternative disk format utility if you have to.
I’m not sure what the otx size limit is but I know at least 2gb works. That’s what I have in mine. You could make a 2gb partition and try with the card you have.
@@RCVideoReviews i had all these issues with windows. It must be fat32 format. If u use a 32gb or smaller card, fat32 will come up in the dropdown list under the format.IT will NOT be an option, only exfat(which wont work) if u use a card bigger than 32gb with windows.Thats how it went for me anyways..thanx great video.
SD card. I was looking at other posts here and am thinking that my problem is the 64 gb micro sd card I am using. I will try a 2 gig and see what happens.
I looked for a while and couldn't find anything indicating the multiprotocol module supports Access. Here is a list of supported protocols: github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md
Yeah, that's the main reason I left FrSky. They take advantage of and use Opensource for the radio itself, but now they've implemented encryption and closed off access to their Tx. Horsehockey--bad form.
how can something so simple be so damn hard.... been trying to install companion and crossfire on to my tx12 for three months and im no better off than when i started.
It comes stock with 256MB. So unless you plan on loading it up with music and images, anything over 2GB is probably overkill and it probably doesn't need that much.
I have a taranas xlite controller i tried updating the firmware. Anyhow I done it wrong now none of my drones will bind to it. Can anyone help me get it back going
It's OpenTx, it will work on pretty much all OpenTx radios. There might be some nuances here or there but in practice, OpenTx is OpenTx. The radio relies on the software not the other way around.

You can. You have to understand, some people who watch this material are not comfortable with file handling, so I tried to show a way for the software to handle their synchronization. It is easy to install new contents directly on top of old though.
PSA... when removing the SD card, keep something in front of the slot, the card will pop out with quite a bit of velocity, took 2 hours before I found mine after it shot out of the slot... it ended up being over 8 feet away from the work bench... no where near where I thought it was.. :)
From the EdgeTX website. Reminder: v2.9 removes support for direct "on radio" migration from versions before v2.6 This version of EdgeTX removes the ability to upgrade on-radio directly from OpenTX 2.3.15 or EdgeTX versions prior to 2.6 (which used the BIN format for storage of model and radio settings). It will however still be possible to migrate settings from older versions of OpenTX and EdgeTX via EdgeTX Companion. In some instances, particularly with some older OpenTX configurations, this is the more reliable mechanism for upgrading.
This great video should be the very first thing that the Radiometer beginner series starts with - replacement of that *** 256Mb SD card that comes with the TX16S. I spent weeks filling out all the various things I wanted on my model (for copying), all servo/surface variations, gyros, rates/expos, sound tracks, global effects, etc and was very nearly done last night when I received the "SD Card Error" message. Two clicks later, my entire model with weeks of work tweaking all the aspects Gone. Nothing remains. It is as if it never existed. SO AGGRAVATED. It also generates a substantial lack of trust. I will have to start over (and undoubtedly have to rewatch many videos), but now on a replacement SD. I can not find a recommendation for the best one to use.
Thank you John! Still can’t believe the entire model was wiped out. What would be helpful is a bullet point list of reminders how to do this and that (for ex I could not get any of the 6 pot switches to work as a timer reset, or how to do a throttle cut). The list could be a short reminder without explanation of how to do things and serve as an index of sorts to your in depth videos on that particular subject. Just a thought as I try to recreate all the fresh learning.@@RCVideoReviews
The idea was to show people how to integrate Companion in SD card management for OpenTx. i.e. Backing up models, radio settings, and using the sync feature. I just did a Livestream showing the more pedantic file explorer copy only option. th-cam.com/video/vQGaasNHckc/w-d-xo.html
@@RCVideoReviews ah sorry, I thought to much short cutted :-) Ok, at the end just the message from my side, copy paste works too, but you are right, in your video you/we can see all the other steps someone might need for a new install or copy step by step of the sd card.
Way to fast for these old eyes and brain. Ive been trying to get the right sd card on all damn day! And my dumb ass put .12 firmware on the radio, and its been out like a week maby. I wanted .11 but checked updates went to .12. This sucks!
There you go. You’re talking about logical switches now. Put L1 on when RSSI drops below 45 then have SF1 play RSSI warning on L1. Put L2 on when RSSI drops below 45 with a two or three second delay then have SF2 play I will cut you track on L2. Super easy.
what sd cards work with tx16s? I cant find info anywhere. I had a 64g sdxc sandisk lying around but my radio wouldn't recognize it. I know 64 is overkill.
Pretty much all SD cards work, it's not the card, it's the partition size and the formatting. You need 32gb or less for a partition and you really want to use 4k allocation size. The data interface struggles with allocation blocks larger than 4k.
Use a smaller card. 8k causes buffering. You can hear audio stutters when it plays audio tracks when using anything over 4K. I know there are free partition tools that will do it on any size partition. The problem on big partitions is the FAT gets big when using 4K blocks. You can also go with a 2gb partition. You don’t need very much space on these radios.

You can rename it, but make sure to add an entry for it in RADIO/models.txt or it won't show up in your "select model" screen.
@@RCVideoReviews Perfect!! It worked! Many thanks!
@@bobkeul7682 You're welcome.
With all the info I have been seeing about the SD card bricking the radio permanently and how frequently it happens, it seems more like a must do and not an upgrade.
Whenever you are showing your desktop computer content: The important details you are showing us are hard to see, a bit blurry and too small. (Even when in full-screen mode on a big monitor and 1080p, with my best eyeglasses!)
Can you please expand your screen to fill the whole TH-cam window, and expand the app window to fill your whole desktop screen?
Happy New Year John. I feel very comfortable managing SD cards. Why suddenly am I getting an "SD card Full" warning. I have Edgetx 2.9.3 (Providence)

This is a great guide. It was very informative and easy to follow.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the good walkthrough.
I noticed that on your first card (card#1) you had a folder called crossfire. That one didnt exist on the sdcard content zipfile that you downloaded. That mght be an issue?
The crossfire scripts are in the tools directory. I’ve since installed crossfire and bound the receivers without issue.
Hi John what is the bigger size that i can use on my TX16S i understand the one is in side is 256 MG Thank you Best regards Lucien.
You'll see something like 2.3.xx When you know your version number, go here:
www.open-tx.org/downloads
Click on you version number
On the resultant page, scroll down to "SD Card Content"
Click on "opentx-tx16s"
You'll see a list of SD Card ZIP Files.
@@RCVideoReviews
Thank you so much for your detailed reply.

@@RCVideoReviews Yes i know it´s a great tool and so easy to work in ones you learn it.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks very much.
What is the largest sd card that can go in the TX16s? Can't find this information anywhere.
Have a question... can I just install my frsky sd card into my new tx16s and be done? Thanks again for the content.
It depends on the radio. If it's a Horus, you might be able to do it. If it's a Taranis, no. Honestly, I would take the time to just backup/restore the models.

Yes I’m in BL mode, it does the bong de dibong bong stuff and says usb connected on the radio but no two screen show in companion.
Companion doesn’t show the screens. Windows does. And sometimes windows doesn’t pop them up. You can look in your file explorer and you should see the directory listing of your sd card there. If you can see it companion will be able to see it. If you can’t see your sd card in explorer companion can’t see it.
What zip file did you use to unzip .rar amber file?
Metro from the MS App store.
Does it matter whether the SD card is formatted to FAT32 or EXfat?? I ask because I tried formatting my sd card and exfat is my only option!!!
They don’t need much. 2gb is more than enough. Anything larger is massive overkill.
I've found that larger allocation sizes during format slow the radio down. Try formatting your card with an allocation unit size of 4096 bytes.
@@RCVideoReviews thanks I will try right now.
reformat and 4096 allocation. I will tell you soon how it went

Make sure it's FAT32. or FAT. If your PC can see it but your radio can't, that sounds like a format issue.

PS Not sure what caused you to say you had an SD card glitch, but if you think the SD card is a problem, I would replace it.

Yeah those little suckers have escape velocity.
From the EdgeTX website.
Reminder: v2.9 removes support for direct "on radio" migration from versions before v2.6
This version of EdgeTX removes the ability to upgrade on-radio directly from OpenTX 2.3.15 or EdgeTX versions prior to 2.6 (which used the BIN format for storage of model and radio settings).

Well Done! Thank You!!!! I'm going to cut you. WTF????? What do I have to do for the radio to say that?
You can assign a special function to play a track on a switch. Set the track to cutyou or whatever it was named. C something.
@@RCVideoReviews I will figure a way for that after every warning. "Warning RSSI Low, I will Cut You."
There you go. You’re talking about logical switches now. Put L1 on when RSSI drops below 45 then have SF1 play RSSI warning on L1. Put L2 on when RSSI drops below 45 with a two or three second delay then have SF2 play I will cut you track on L2. Super easy.
Test comment.
what sd cards work with tx16s? I cant find info anywhere. I had a 64g sdxc sandisk lying around but my radio wouldn't recognize it. I know 64 is overkill.
Pretty much all SD cards work, it's not the card, it's the partition size and the formatting. You need 32gb or less for a partition and you really want to use 4k allocation size. The data interface struggles with allocation blocks larger than 4k.
@@RCVideoReviews thx. I created a 32gb partition. It would only let me set 8k allocation, 4k gave me an error in windows.
