Basically, you can't go wrong with either of them. If you have Downbeat, there really is no need to upgrade. If you don't have Downbeat, go for the one you like the look of best.
Depends on what you're wanting as one is more like a toy, Downbeat, while the other aims for the G1 cartoon look, Jive. I've got the Transform and Rollout Jazz but I've also got Fans Toys Jive pre-ordered.
I have them both, Jazz is such a rare character in the MP scale that I'm good keeping them together. MT in Alt mode and avoid that nightmare FT transformation. It's a win win.
I have the toy deco downbeat, it has even more paint, and I have no complaints. Fanstoys really really nailed the head sculpt, that’s the biggest difference imo. Not 150$ of an upgrade, but the head looks really good. Merry Christmas Bobby and to the whole Skullface family.
Biggest difference is Downbeat is the G1 toy while Jive is the G1 cartoon as Fans Toys completely nailed the cartoon look both in alt and robot mode.
I think this score is indicative of how ahead of its time maketoys was and how good a figure he still is,I probably would've given the Fanstoys Jazz the win but a point here and there really shouldn't matter when the releases where 6yrs apart. I had the premium version and I sold it long ago and I got Jive and iam more than happy with him to me he's an amazing figure with exceptional articulation, thanx for the vs skullface and Merry Christmas 2U and ur family 👍
Depending on what you plan to do with either toy, I think the FansToys Jive looks cleaner overall and is better for display purposes while the Make Toys materials, like the marbled silver and especially the black plastic just looks cheaper and the glaring gaps in the seams where it's glued don't do it any favors either but the Make Toys Down Beat probably lends itself to a better play experience.

This was great. I appreciate what FT was trying to do, but having watched this, I am glad I invested in my MT Downbeat.
For me It comes down to toon accuracy. It think Bobby is a little salty from last weeks scratch. Happy Holidays to the Skulls

Awesome and very Fair Comparison...I have both and I still like MT better. FTs biggests fail for me is proportions, the heroic look here does not Jive with me. Too slender, thighs/legs too long or torso is too squished. The chest reminds me why I never liked MP Ironhide...car chest too short bot abdomen too long. In my eyes, it should be the other way around, car chest should be longer to a shorter abdomen. Also FTs is worse at the feet, I prefer the rounded outer lower legs and it's actually more toon proportioned compared to the tiny faux sides of the FTs. Last fail for me is the Alt mode...too toon to the point where FTs will have to make all the car bots so alt modes will look more cohesive as a collection. Both Great figure...I am a OG MP collector, MTs fits my taste. For Toon Collectors FTs will Jive with you more.
FT for me, have both but glad I bought Jive because it's perfect for what I want. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Bobby.
Im not a fan of Downbeat. I hate the lower legs proportionately, the kibble on the back of the leg is too much and often hangs downs below the ankle rocker, and the head looks like a little kid playing dress up.
The FT Transformation isnt nearly as bad as indicated (tho not a walk in the park) and the shoulder ratchets are far too tight but are easily loosened w a half turn of a screw driver. The feet are great when not connected at the bottom.
The only thing that I like more on Make Toys are the gold/spoked rims.
My Downbeat is a later release that has paint instead of the grey plastic. I also don't have the issues I read about with the chest tabs.
I still bought Fanstoys just because I like Jazz. This gives me 3 MP scales versions of Jazz now.

Merry Christmas for tomorrow to you and the family Bobby, hope you have a great one. I'm swapping out as FT fix the one 1 thing I never liked on MT, the head sculpt, and its something I always rate highly as so much of the character comes from that.

Glad I didn't buy the Maketoys years ago as the swirly grey plastic was a deal breaker for me. I figured someone would come out with a better Jazz, but it just took longer then I thought it would.
I like how Jive is a little bigger. Idw jazz is my favorite incarnation and i think jive pulls off bad ass commando jazz the best.

I took a page from Bobby's book and let my family compare Jive vs Downbeat premium version. They preferred Downbeat and then my mom lectured me on how she prefers the sculpted details. My mom knows nothing about transformers or action figures but somehow she was channeling big Skullface energy. Here I am thinking they'd affirm my choice in Jive. What have I unleashed?

Honestly The robot doesn't look bad next to mp prowl, bluestreak and sideswipe which all have the older aesthetic and the wide chest.
The shoulders on Jive are a real bummer for me. I get it if it was a larger MP, but unnecessary for a small carbot. Kinda amazing that both suffer chest separation syndrome lol. Thanks for the comparison video!
Looking forward to this. I have always thought the MakeToys proportions were off. I'm hoping this will help me figure out why, and if I still feel that way.
It’s weird. Until I got jive I never realized the proportions on DB were off. Then I placed them next to each other and it hit me big time. Definitely think they are better on Jive. DB is still a good figure and I will keep it. Being I don’t transform my figs almost at all it’s Jive for the easy win if I had to choose.
I wanted Downbeat but got into the collecting game too late so Jive in on it's way to me now from BBTS but I wanted Downbeat. I hope I have a better experience with mine than yours! I have to say though that your Bobby sir made me a fanboy for FansToys. I went back and watched all of your FT reviews and after I got Outrider, I was sold! Maketoy Jazz has been my favorite 3rd party figure and the first one that I really wanted, at a time I didn't even know what 3rd party is.
Maketoys for me the fanstoys looks like a nightmare if you wanna transform it
I have Downbeat with the Toyhax stickers which adds the chrome on the lower shins, all the Martini details, and G1 aesthetic touches. Even with that it still costs less than Jive. I've transformed it many times, and agree that it's less of a headache that the FT appears. I cancelled my FT pre-order once I saw it wasn't a significant upgrade. I believe it's the first time I've done so for a FT figure.
My second FT figure and they both felt greasy out of the box… is that just an individual copy issue or is that just how FT stuff feels?

I had a feeling the Maketoys was going to give fanstoys a run for their money on this figure. Maketoys jazz was made in that sweet spot of third party competition right before every company went for tune accuracy.

This was really interesting... I was wondering how the premium version of Downbeat would stack up. While it might be a bit closer, I don't think it would change the outcome. For me I still think bot mode looks better for Fanstoys. I love he is a bit bigger (I mean he is Primes right hand bot) and his head sculpt is better... ultimately the presence I would rather have in bot mode. Worth an upgrade I don't know, I love the character to much, I'm beyond the thought of not having both :P.
Very interesting versus. Although the head sculpt is money on FT, it still seems like the top of his helmet fits tight around his head. Like it makes his face bigger and makes it look it it's popping out. Almost like it's not big enough for his head. The MT head reminds me more of the comic book head, which I tend to like better. But what I would say FT did better is the Visor. It's more present and visible. I still prefer the sculpt overall on the FT figure. I have preordered the FT, but also have the MT (toy version). It has the shins painted and the lights on the chest are blue as well, but.... It has all that toy decal that I don't like. I'm going to display my MT in car mode along with my MP-10 that I have displayed in trailer mode. It would be very interesting to see Takara make one though.
The pin head on Maketoys kills it for me
Super toon doesn't when its standing on a shelf next to mp datsuns, mp sideswipe and the first mp wheeljack.

Happy to have cancelled Jive as I decided to stick with Down Beat. Pretty Upbeat on that decision
The biggest selling point for the FT is that head sculpt. It makes the figure have more presence but i have the premium Downbeat and considering I'm newer to collecting I'm leaning on keeping with him to have budget to get other characters
That said, i dunno if FT already does this but they (other companies) should provide a list of the paint colors used in each figure. That way if there is paint chipping, then i can at least try to get te correct color paint and fix it.

Hey, Bobby - Just wanted to thank you for posting this one. It finally convinced me to pick up a Premium Downbeat, and it’s a terrific toy.
Jive’s great and I’m glad for those who bought him, but the more Anime Robot proportions and details won out over the American Cartoon styling of Fanstoys’ offering. And the updated paint & tampography on the Maketoys reissue elevate it that little bit further.
Hey Bobby, I have TR 01 Hova, and the arms on him are a bitch to stay connected at the shoulders, thats why I pre-ordered the Fans Toys Jive, I personally think he looks more like G 1 Jazz
Good call on the spiral-y plastic. This episode is a real surprise, I have not been this underwhelmed with the look of an FT toy in a while.
Jive is more aesthetically pleasing, I don’t have Downbeat and I intend not to get him.
I still like my Toyworld one over these two. I like the toon toy mix. But I will get Ft for the movie shelf.
I have both FT and MT, I would have to say FT looks really good but when it comes to transforming the figures MT wins. There’s a lot of reason for buying toys but we can all agree that toys are meant to be fun and not stressful. I can transform MT without even watching a YT video for it even if its been months since I last played with it, most FT you have to watch it over and over to transform it right (I can transform my FT figures well without scratching it but it is hell lot stress).
why buy FT if it stresses me out? I like it aesthetically, but for playability? its a downer.
Yup I have GT jazz and fans toys jazz but make toys has some cool stuff like make toys hound is awesome to me even though not cartoon accurate but the build quality is just as good as fans toys

I missed premium Downbeat at a reasonable price (I actually pre-ordered it but I screwed up the shipping and it was going to cost $200, so I didn't end up getting it), so I'm still going with Jive even though it doesn't look fun nor particularly sturdy. I wish the grey was silver and that he had the rims like Downbeat, as well as the toy livery (or, at least, thicker red stripes like the original Downbeat).
Honestly, it's kind of sad to me that FansToys didn't knock this one out of the park and even arguably (and according to this comparison, which I think was one of the fairest comparisons I've seen in a long time from anyone) not as good as an old MakeToys figure. I'd wait for someone else to do it, but MMC won't, and if Takara ever does, it'll likely either end up with QC issues... or like Hound.
I like fantoys slightly being a g1 fan still maketoys looks good still. Too bad fantoys don't have vented low legs
MT looks better all around, in both modes. No contest for me.

The zeta and Transform and roll out Jazz’s are also good.
ToyWorld's version is better. Zeta's release chips paint like there's no tomorrow. I have two of them, so I know first-hand...
I believe it was Printformers who compared both and mentioned that the ToyWorld version doesn't have paint-chipping issues though.
The only real problem is that the torso is a mess to transform. The arms and legs are done quite well though (minus the gaps in the arms), and the racing livery is gorgeous.

Thanks for the comparison. I sold Downbeat the moment FT announced Jive. While MT did a pretty good job, the swirly gray plastic and thin black plastic panels on the legs as well as the alt mode lacking part of the rear bumper always bothered me. The detents in the hip ratchets also made him a bit difficult to pose. His torso would easily come loose from the chest. FT is a bear to transform. I had an arm pop off the mushroom peg connector (my fault), but I was able to twist it back on after much trial and error. Once I go back to robot mode, he's staying there. He looks fantastic and works better than MT did for me. Overall I prefer FT for Jazz.
Missed the gimmick of the grappling hook and that would've tied them out on gimmicks and therefore would've been a tie overall

There is one more gimmick on the MT version that you can flip out the doors on the back to recreate his dreamwave design where he had the datson trio style door wing. I don't think FT can do that.

No it isn’t. But not having to is even better when we’re talking about the level of professionalism in assembly.
It's not hard by any stretch, but having to turn a single screw is just not OK for what's supposed to be a premium product.

both are prety good figures of Jazz, and I'm surprised takara hasn't done Jazz yet. How I'd view the score 12:23 is:
1, I'd tie out gimmicks because FT has opening doors in car mode and you can attach gun to spoiler
2. I think it's important to mention that the first rachet click of the MT A-stance is too wide. And because the upper legs are short and the lower legs have kibbles I found it harder to get it into certain poses like kneeling. So I'd tie out articulation too.
-> Making the results 5-4 Fanstoys. Though if you already have the MT, it might not be worth switching out in terms of expenses

That's subjective though, isn't it? Except for "Presence", it's a fairly objective comparison.
Nowhere near a masterpiece... An OK-piece maybe. Not FT's best work in the slightest. And Maketoys looks much better than any toon-centric trashtoy.

After this many years, Fanstoys really failed to take it to them - mainly because of how toon it is. Just goes to show, that toon aesthetic does no favors, no matter how long you have to work on it.

You have lost your mind! I'm usually pretty close on opinion but it always the ones you get frustrated with we part ways on. FT nails the figure better and is build better hands down. Look at those MT biceps. All that foot kibble. Gaps under the hood. Beady little head. Its all glaringly obvious and im skippimg a bunch. And you reluctantly give paint to FT? Pfft. I will admit I stopped transforming new additions years ago and I'm sure its a pain but the rest of the comparasions you made are tainted with salt imho.
