A fantastic early song of his is "Games Without Frontiers." It's one you gotta pay attention to. "Shock the Monkey" and "Big Time" are also really great.
And Kate Bush sings back up on Games Without Frontiers
Yes! Give us Shock The Monkey.
"Shock the Monkey", Oh yeah, probably my all-time favorite Gabriel song & the first I ever heard of his. Takes me back to the early days of MTV.
Good recommendations
Digging in the Dirt, Washing of the Water
Peter was the creative force behind most of his videos. He had long been interested in filmmaking. He just channeled that desire and imagination into pioneering the art of the music video.
This video and the one made for Sledgehammer were collaborations with Aardman Studios, creators of Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and Chicken Run.
I hope they get to those movies and shorts on their movie reaction channel very soon.
To be correct, they were directed by Stephen R Johnson, a USC film school classmate of mine who did a very similar style of student film to Sledgehammer while at USC. I worked with him on both videos in pre-production as creative consultant and storyboard artist. All of the shots were planned at his studio in his home in Los Angeles first before any filming began. He then took those to Peter Gabriel for approval, and made changes if needed. Aardman Studios provided the technical expertise & crew for the animation and its production. On this particular music video, Steam, he called me in to his studio to brainstorm ideas for the project. He played the song and my first reaction was that it was "funky" and almost 70s-like. That's when we came up with the opening sequence of the extended limo and pimp outfit. The rest came easily. Since Stephen is no longer with us, I'm going to make sure he gets his due credit.
@@themoviemaniac8416 thank you for the exposition, my condolences to your classmate. you guys did some damn good work
@@superturkle Thanks very much. Stephen passed away in Kansas at his parent's home in 2015 at age 62. I visited there once many years ago. The last time I saw him was when he came to Los Angeles for a meeting with myself and a film producer for a possible biopic of Lon Chaney, the father, which would star Ray Liotta as Chaney. We had an okay from HBO to start pre-production, but then Steve took ill, the producer had his hands in other projects, and Ray was committed to others as well, so it never got past my written treatment stage. Then the producer passed away, Ray was still interested however, but then Ray passed away recently. Honestly, it wasn't the first or last project I was involved in that didn't go. I then retired from the film business and moved to a rural community about 100 miles away from LA. I just take things easy now with 5 grandchildren.
@@themoviemaniac8416 i forgot ray liotta passed away dangit. two of my favorite movies are goodfellas and identity.
good health and fortune to your family.
p.s. have you tried watching "call me chato" on utube? hes a former tv executive who has some interesting stuff to say about show business. he was a member of the "royal canadian air farce," dr. demento used to play their stuff on his radio show all the time.
He can also give you some very sober serious vibes as well, he has always been a huge supporter of Amnesty International and human rights, his song Biko is about Anti-Apartheid, Steven Biko who was an activist in South Africa who was killed by police in custody and the song Wallflower is a great song which gives a perspective of a political prisoner in captivity. Tremendous song with poignant descriptive lyrics
Always worth noting that Gabriel is primarily known as a serious artist. So much so that "So", the album, was written as a response to critics who praised his work but still thought that his range was limited to serious commentary. In response, he wrote an album that was significantly more "silly", as it were. More interesting still, that his former bandmate Phil Collins largely had the opposite reputation, leading to "...But Seriously", which was far more somber and introspective compared to Phil's more "silly" style. Both albums were released around the same time, even: "So" in 1986, "...But Seriously" in 1989.
Biko is still one of the greatest songs written and performed.
Saw Peter at The Spectrum in Philly in '86 with my bud from H.S. The end of the show during "Biko" 20,000 of us were raising our fists and yelling along with Peter and then he just stood quietly on stage turning and looking at all of us and raising his fist as we raised ours and let us yell by ourselves man it still gives me chills, remember that night like it was yesterday.
Tony Levin has played bass forever with Peter Gabriel. His musicianship is one of a kind.
I saw Peter live in the 80's and his bass player comes out and he has this crazy glam metal hairstyle and I'm thinking "gee, I thought his bass player was some bald dude." Midway through the first song, Peter walks over and pulls his wig off and the crowd was all cracking up!
Tony's also the bass player for King Crimson, and he played on Double Fantasy for John Lennon. I know Jordan liked the bass on Just Like Starting Over.
"Uncle Tony" to Peter's daughter.
AGREED!!!
He also played bass on a track or two from Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.
IMO Peter Gabriel was one of the few who embraced the concept of both music and video perfectly. Lest we forget this was the guy who wore all sorts of costumes when he sang with Genesis. He was always combining the visual and the musical.
You can see a different side of Gabriel with "Biko", a eulogy for Bantu Stephen Biko.
Along with "Red Rain" and "Shock the Monkey" all-time favorites.
Love those! Two of my all-time favorites of his.
When you talked about Peter's "swag", it reminded me of stories from his band members. They ALL agree that Peter becomes a different person on stage (or in videos). Actually, he is described as the nerdiest of nerds when not performing. Also a genius when it comes to music. 🙂
When I met him, he did seem to be very shy/reserved. Later on that night, watching him in concert ... he came out of his shell and put on an amazing performance. Just love his music!
I know I've posted this before, as well as others, but you must watch the Secret World tour concert. He definitely commands the stage, but the rest of the band joins in as well. You can tell they have a lot of fun performing together. It's a really fun watch!
His Blood of Eden duet with Paula Cole is superb.
Agreed. One of the best concert tours - what an amazing concept/staging. I've watched the dvd more times than I can count and it never gets old. Stands the test of time! ps... Paula's vocals are out of this world fantastic!
@@lisaw5604I agree. Amazing. I had requested In your eyes from this show but I believe they did just the audio. That can't compare with the live version. It's almost spiritual. I think they should react to this version. ✌️
I attended one of his "Secret World" tour concerts in California. It was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever seen.
These are the kind of videos that I love. And PG and his team are masters at this genre. I call this record Sledgehammer junior. I don’t know if you’ve played “in your eyes“ but if you haven’t, I highly recommend you do. It’s a beautiful ballad. 🕊❤️🎼
They already did. 😘
Jay & Amber, you'll love Peter's "Games Without Frontiers" and "Big Time"!!!!
Oh yeah, "Big Time" for sure! I'm surprised they haven't done that one yet.
and 'The flood'
My favorite Gabriel song. He has a great live version of this song with the amazing Paula Cole singing back up. If you want to hear a great song, do Paula Cole's Where Have All The Cowboys Gone. Great Song
Paula also duets on Don't Give Up with him, and although Kate is the musical love of my life, Paula does a good job as well.
@@Catbytes I have seen Paula live. She has an amazing voice.
Paula is awesome. I love her first two albums, they are so raw.
Digging in the dirt is a must listen from Peter's catalog.
Surprised they haven't done "Shock The Monkey" yet.
You did In Your Eyes but you haven't really done the song until you do the version from Secret World Live! AMAZING!
Best concert video on TH-cam
Yes!
@@RobertoSantana61 I can't decide the best but it's up there with Stop Making Sense (my number one for 40 years), Live in Pompeii, Downhill From Here, and Lady Waltz!
It all started in the seventies - Peter's theatrics when he was still frontman in Genesis: weird clothing, crazy costumes. It put Genesis on the map really. Pre-computer of course, all live shows
"Secret world live" is a great show, Peter Gabriel's live shows are always great
Peter Gabriel. Nuff said!!!!
Jay and Amber, I'm glad that you loved this. Other tracks by him which I recommend are: "Games Without Frontiers", "Solsbury Hill" I think that you might have done this one, but I'm not certain, "Shock The Monkey", "Big Time", "Red Rain", "Here Comes the Flood", "Taboo", "That'll Do".
"Here Comes the Flood". Good call. I was waiting for PG first album. Bought it the 1st day it came out. This song is the last song on the 1st album and it is awesome.
@@williammckay9229 I agree (of course) I think that people often forget about his earlier stuff.
I like all your recommendations…..especially “BIG TIME”.
"I Don't Remember" is a MUST-hear (and a 100% banger!). 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘
All great suggestions. And if you want try some more of his darker/deeper songs, I'd recommend "Blood of Eden", "Mercy Street" and "Secret World". "Blood of Eden" is a particularly good counterpoint to this song, as it's a much more reflective, sombre take on the eternal Battle/Attraction of the Sexes.
This one has some funk to it. The video is so trippy. I'm with Kimmy, give us "Shock The Monkey".
Jay & Amber Peter Gabriel's has great 👍 80's music 🎶 n he was also part of the group Genesis as the lead 🎤 singer 👩🎤 until he left n Phil Collins took over as the lead 🎤 singer 👨🎤 of Genesis. Now U guys have to do more reactions to Peter Gabriel's music 🎶 like Shock The Monkey 🙉 , N My Favorite ❤ is Biko!!! U guys will enjoy all his music 🎶 videos
Peter Gabriel had some strange music videos, but at the same time, they were visually impressive and memorable. Two other videos you should check out are "Big Time" (Directed by Stephen R. Johnson, who also directed the videos for "Steam" and "Sledgehammer") and "Shock the Monkey."
Peter is a rabbit hole you need to go down. Family Snapshot, Wallflower, San Jacinto, Biko, Red Rain, Mercy Street, Secret World, Sky Blue, just to name a few.
No no That rottweiler is a perfect example of A. Sawhat's the weather the route. Y. Hey, the rottweiler holiday Jimmy j.😊😊😊
That was a vice prior for Marvin Gaye. For Marvin Gaye uh, yeah, I said that I was drunk so drunk. He couldn't stand when I recorded for Marvin. And I hate throwing down a bicycle unlocked. You wouldn't roll away. The song mockingwood will have an area on rail
If you liked ‘Sledgehammer’, try checking out ‘Big Time’ - I think the same people who animated ‘Sledgehammer’ also did that one. Also ‘Shock the Monkey’ is really out there if you wanna try something different
Have you checked out his video, Shock the Monkey? Also, check out his song Shakin' the Tree with Youssou N'Dour.
The live version of Shaking the Tree is beautiful.
I remember when this premiered on MTV! I thought there was no way he could top Sledgehammer and of course, he did (imo).
This was a big deal because of the the 3 Dimensional computer animation utilized throughout. That type of imagery was still new to A LOT of people at the time which added a layer of intrigue to both the video and the artist.
Peter Gabriel "SHOCK THE MONKEY" and "RED RAIN" are my favorites. ❤❤
Haven't heard this in so long! Sledgehammer and this video were so huge on MTV when they each came out. Peter Gabriel live is fantastic!❤❤❤
Classics like “Shock The Monkey” and “Big Time” come recommended highly, obviously…but if you’re looking for something a little different from later in his career, I’d suggest checking out “The Book of Love”.
It’s short, sweet and simple, but the lyrics and sentiment are beautiful. Like many, I first discovered it in the Scrubs series finale, but it’s been one of my favorites of his ever since. 😁👍🏻
You need to react to Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Firth of Fifth, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight....
And Carpet Crawlers.
Peter Gabriel was a genius of his time. His videos and songs made history.
Regards from Chile.
Peter really hit the high notes with this track!
The swag is totally a put-on: he's so shy and quiet in real life. If you want to see him at his artsiest, check out "Shock the Monkey" and "I Don't Remember."
Peter Gabriel is such a trip! Love it!
PS-Peter Gabriel was originally the lead singer with the group Genesis. When he left to go solo Phil Collins took over lead vocals with Genesis as well as doing solo stuff-Colin Ward
He was way ahead of his time when it came to videos...besides having great music.
Peter Gabriel is a musical genius. A true visionary. Icon!!!
Peter Gabriel - Red Rain
Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey
Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers
Peter Gabriel - Biko
Peter Gabriel - The Feeling Begins (Passion Soundtrack)
A true visionary! Peter is a true musical artist marching to the beat of his own drum! No one is like him!
I’m in the older age group, but this isn’t bad.🥰♥️♥️
Great call, Peter Gabriel is a giant that is well worth diving into, you should react to Shaking the Tree from his Secret World tour, simply mind-blowing!
I think both the song and the video were meant to be "Sledgehammer II". IIRC, even the same director for the videos.
Peter Gabriel is a musical genius. Just saw him in concert and it was mind blowing! His new album, i/o, just hit number one in the UK which is incredible considering the last time he had a number one album and his age. The album is fantastic. Anyways..
My picks for you to react to would be:
Big Time
Shock The Monkey
Red Rain
Games Without Frontiers (with Kate Bush)
Biko
Digging In The Dirt
San Jacinto (Secret World Tour version)
Blood Of Eden (with Sinead O'Connor)
Shaking The Tree (Secret World Tour version)
Washing Of The Water (slow but beautiful piano ballad)
Also, if you want to hear him fronting Genesis, with Phil Collins on drums, try "The Carpet Crawlers"
Thanks guys! I got so excited to see this in my notifications 🥰🎶
I love his new song i/o--so good!
Peter Gabriel is a musical creative genius. He is so truely unique and his deep catalogue of music is mesmerising. His new album called I/O is number 1 throughout the UK and Europe and has been 20 years between albums.
I suggest you guys dive into his “Secret World” live DVD for one of the best concert experiences you will see. The Song..
In Your Eyes is A BANGER or epic proportions!
Another great song from Peter Gabriel, he has great presence. Another good one of his is 'Games without Frontiers.-Colin Ward
Peter is the driving force behind his videos. Even with Genesis he was the one creating all the crazy visuals in their live shows. He has worked often with Qhébec visual artist Michel Lemieux for his live shows and videos. Also, that bass is played by the great Tony Levin.
Aka “Big Time - 1992 edition”
Gabriel had world class percussion and bass on his tracks…makes everything stand out ❤
Peter is a true icon in prog rock. And always has a great band. If you haven't already, you must see his live stuff. Fantastic.
You really need to check out some of Gabriel's earlier work. The songs you have listened to are from the So and Us albums, but he had been making albums for almost 20 years by the time he released So in 1986. From his Genesis years check out "Watcher in the Skys" (long) or "Supper's Ready" (even longer over 20 minutes), "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Off his self titled albums "Solsbury Hill", "Games Without Frontiers", "Biko", "Shock the Monkey" or "San Jacinto". "Red Rain" and "Mercy Street" are also off of So and "Digging in the Dirt" and "Blood of Eden" are good tracks off of Us.
I saw him on this very tour. He came on stage in a big red British phone booth. He left the stage in a suitcase. No kidding. A suitcase appeared on stage, he opened it and got into it, and that was it! Done! Bye bye.
It was incredible to be in that audience. Honestly, we couldn’t believe what we were seeing. Peter Gabriel is a master of illusions.
Peter's bass player here is Tony Levin. Awesome, innovative dude. Played with King Crimson, and is a prolific studio bassist. Wow! Invented the "funk fingers" (drum sticks attached to the fingers to thump the strings). As an aspiring bassist, check out his Wikipedia page!
peter gabriel has been one creative guy and performer ever and he put alot into in work and had one amazing in the 1980's this is a good one here from genesis to his solo career has brought some good songs.
Gabriel Just Released his first album since the 1970/e - it is fantastic!! - Try also "Digging in the Dirt" - Thank you!
Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of the group Genesis before leaving for a solo career and he never looked back. A musically creative genius whom I've learned to respect more and more over the years. I haven't seen a reaction to Gabriel's songs 'Big Time' or 'Dirt' yet and believe me they are songs you need to hear if you love Peter Gabriel, seriously.
One of my absolute favorite songs ever let alone favorite Peter Gabriel songs
Love Peter G and yes Games WIthout Frontiers, Shock the Monkey and Big Time are all super tracks with sublime beats/rhythms.
Peter Gabriel is an incredible artist and he has lots of fun.
I saw Peter Gabriel for the first time in San Francisco on the WOMAD (World Of Music Art & Dance) tour in ‘93. Lucky, I also got to see Sinéad O’Connor sing Blood Of Eden with PG!
Definitely check out the Live in Athens ‘87 version of In Your Eyes.
You have to remember that PG was the original lead singer for Genesis which was a very theatrical band at their beginning. PG would change his costume for many of the songs. When he left Genesis he seemed to take a lot of that with him. I wish that you would go back and listen to Genesis with PG singing. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is a great song. Another great PG video is Shock The Monkey.
You have to remember that Gabriel was a founding member of the original Genesis and they were out there when he was the band leader.. When he decided to become a solo artist we got songs like Steam Sledgehammer Games Without Frontiers and shocked the monkey Stephen R. Johnson Direct all 3 videos Stream Bigtime and Slegehammer
Another fun one from him. Such an interesting album, both musically and visually.
It's Christmas time. You must listen to Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne.
You guys have to do some of his earlier work with Genesis. He wore the craziest costumes for the live performances. He was very young but already incredibly artistic. I recommend a live performance of "watcher of the skies"
I suggest watching Peter Gabriel perform "Steam" live on his Secret World Live Tour" it's so good! His female back up singer is Paula Cole, who later would sing the Dawson's Creek Theme "I don't wanna wait". Steam live shows the true joy of the song, just in his performance. Check it out, you won't be sorry! 😊😊😊
Love Peter, love everything about him
His live steam performance is awesome. He feeds off the energy of the audience. He even had is daughter sing background in Steam during a concert.
Wow, haven't heard this one in years! Another high energy hit of Gabriel's! So, many to his vast catalog. Although there are several others I could recommend, "Red Rain" would have to be next for me.
Peter Gabriel in the late 80s and through the 00's was just unmatched in concert. Go find a concert version of "Solsbury Hill" and feel the joy with his regular bandmates there.
Great song with a groove you can't help to bop to. ❤
His 1993 concert version of "Steam" is fantastic. Look it up on TH-cam, in the "Secret World Live" tour. The entire show is genius, with Paula Cole on backing/co-vocals.
I've been a PG fan since late 70's. I even saw him in concert 2 months ago. Many here have recommended some of his great older tunes. I would like to suggest one of his brand new videos, "The Court". The man still has it!
DANG!!! I haven't heard this in probably 3 decades. If you all hadn't done this I would have forgotten it existed, and I used to love this song. You two help old timers like me remember great stuff we forgot, Thank you.
J & A I JUST saw Peter Gabriel in his i/o Tour and I an telling you he HAS NOT let up with the visuals. He works with incredible visual artist and he makes sure they get credit. Every detail is SO well thought out from the timeclock ticking imagery prior to the show starting to the tech Orange Jumsuits the tech staff and security wore. NO opening act necessary - WHO would open?! PLEASE react to the LIVE version of IN YOUR EYES fromt he Secret World Tour!!! You have not seen him in live in action yet and I PROMISE YOU he will take you to Church and back. One fo the most Life Affirming performances you will ever see!
I forgot to mention. Peter also recorded the same song (Steam) in a totally different style....called "Quiet Steam". I actually prefer it to the hit version you heard in the video. For those interested in hearing it, just search youtube for quiet steam. Here is the link to the official "Quiet Steam". th-cam.com/video/x9WcHlURmxY/w-d-xo.html
Thank you!! I am a huge fan but never heard that version. I just looked it up and I love it! You rock 😎
Saw him at Woodstock 94. He closed the festival, it was astounding. Worth checking out.
So glad to see you back to Peter so soon after "Don't Give Up". At the risk of repeating other suggestions, the next video and song you have to hit is "Digging In The Dirt" which has more of a concept to it than "Steam", which was basically Peter just having fun! "Kiss That Frog" is just as cheeky as "Steam", and if you want to give yourself a thrill even after Halloween, I recommend "Intruder" or even "Family Snapshot", no videos to those songs, but the songs themselves tell the stories. Don't forget to check out his work with Genesis as their lead singer in the early 70s on songs like "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", "The Carpet Crawlers" and "Watcher Of The Skies". Great reactions, both of you! 😎👍
Morgan James with post modern jukebox covering sledgehammer is a must❤❤😊
As others have mentioned, you'll fall in love with the live versions of some of his hits in the Secret World Tour. In your eyes is a must.
"Big Time" is another with video in the same lines as this and "Sledgehammer" were. "Solsbury Hill" was his first big song once he left Genesis, "Shock the Monkey" and "Through the Wire" are great early works too.
Tony Levin plays that driving bass line.... Such a nice guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times at the NAMM show.... My old bass player gave him a ride back to his hotel one year.... He also played bass on John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy album and was in King Crimson.... Massive talent!
This one and Digging in the dirt are my favorite.
Y'a, Peter Gabriel decided to step down by himself, same with Genesis, he was bigger than big. He do what he want and he's rich. He's the boss.
Heyy, i haven't heard this one before, and i loved it. Peter always did videos that were "out there", but always fun (well most of em). ..... As others have stated "Games Without Frontiers" by PG is a really great song, and more serious than "Steam" & "Sledgehammer" ❤
Oh yeah, Shock the Monkey and Big Time as noted below. Also check out Red Rain and the In Your Eyes live video, it's amazing!
Peters song The Blood of Eden is beautiful and so deep 🫶🏴🇬🇧
Peter Gabriel also does a great job with emotional songs. Very good with lyrics. Mercy Street is one. Very soft musically. But when you read what/who it’s based on…and her struggles and poems, you can see his genius shine thru in his lyrics.
Thanks guys! Peter Gabriel is super cool. Couple of my favourite tracks are "Big Time" - really high octane - and "Games without Frontiers" (which also features a little Kate Bush cameo).
I always felt like this was a continuation of Sedgehammer. Please give Games Without Frontiers a listen.
Props to Jay for shouting out the bass. That's Tony Levin, who has played with so many people, I don't even remember who it was I saw him play with. Peter is probably who he's played with the most, and his contributions are invaluable.
His videos are masterpieces and I remember the graphics in this video being very cutting edge at the time in the 90's. I listened to this album over and over! Other songs and videos of his to consider would be BIG TIME, and DIGGING IN THE DIRT, and KISS THAT FROG!! Love y'all ~ keep smiling!!
Peter using VERY early CGI in this video. Imagine what he'd do with the technology now! Fantastic reactions to a fantastic song. Please react to Big Time. Another Peter Gabriel classic.
One of my favorite songs and video. Peter is the man!
Peter with early Genesis was quite something. Make-up and costumes. But always great music. ☮🤎🎶
OMG, I haven't heard this song in so long. Used to watch on MTV back in the music days. Love it, totally hilarious.
This was groundbreaking technology for the time period. Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite 80s singers his early Genesis stuff is out there.
But he's just like the cool dad that everyone loves lol.
One of the best!
Also I've not heard this song in quite a while might have to have a Peter Gabriel day. Been trying to do "deep cuts" on my music streaming service to try and hear something I've not heard or in a long time.
One of my favorites from Peter. He was the front man for Genesis and was replaced by Phil Collins. Digging In The Dirt & Secret World from the same album as this song are really good. Also Biko & Not One Of Us from one of his earliest albums are great
Love Biko ❤
Time to check out Peter as a live artist. ”Shaking the tree”, ”Secret World”, ”Come talk to me” or of course ”In your eyes” from the Secret World tour. So much goodness an musicality on stage.
I like Peter Gabriel. He has a funky side which I love.
From the same album is Digging in the Dirt. His vocals are a bit more deep and soulful. I love his songs a lot but I think Digging in the Dirt is my favorite. Video is cool too. ❤
This music video came on a VHS I had in the early '90s, Computer Animation Festival Vol. 2. It was featured along a lot of fun and experimental shorts, some with stories and some to music. This was before Pixar, and the technology was still mind-boggling. I think you can watch all of it on here, I definitely recommend it to anyone curious.
