It is amazing what this engine can do for some of these game concepts. Watching the Sonic vs Metal Sonic race looked fun and intense as hell. And Shadow skating around to strafe enemies with the machine gun looked really interesting too.
Even though it was released during that Dark Era, I personally don't find Sonic Rivals to be _that_ bad. Sure it's got it's flaws, and the fact that _only four_ characters were playable (Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow and Silver), but it's still fun and I'm glad to see some fan mods of it here.

If by the term "dark" you mean awful decade, we had games like heroes, unleashed, the black knight, Mephiles in o6, rush and rush adventure, riders and riders: zero gravity, battle etc. Just because there were 2 or 3 bad games doesn't mean it killed the franchise, have you seen in what state crash and spyro were before they're trilogy remakes? They were way worse.
I think he meanted to Say that age where the Main games HAD to be edgy or Unnecessarily dark for no reason at all Like unleashed, black Knight, legend of the 7 rings, 06, heroes (not edgy by itself but Neo metal IS badass) or Shadow the hedgehog (wich is the best example)
I never really saw this as a "dark era". I think people are just upset that these games are different from what they grew up with. Yeah, these games have some really huge flaws that make me question what the developers were even thinking, but so did every game that came out before and after them. That's just how Sonic's always been.
